Nematode-induced demasculinisation of Dolichopus males (Diptera: Dolichopodidae)

Species-level identification of male dolichopodid flies (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) is based on the structure of genitalia and secondary sexual characters. The effect of parasitic nematodes on the diagnostic features was studied in a sample of over 6000 Dolichopus adults collected mostly from Finland. Large nematodes were found in the abdominal cavity of 45 Dolichopus males. Parasitised males of the small to mid-sized species D. fraterculus Zetterstedt, D. lepidus Staeger, D. longitarsis Stannius and D. picipes Meigen were clearly demasculinised. Secondary sexual characters like a narrowed face, long ciliae on hind femora and modified tarsal segments were weakly developed or absent. Changes in the size, shape and position of male genitalia were also found. Larger species like D. discifer Stannius and D. popularis Wiedemann were less affected by the parasites. Some of the nematode-infected males have been described as new species and they are here synonymised as follows: Dolichopus brachyurus Zetterstedt 1859=D. fraterculus Zetterstedt, 1843; D. consimilis Wahlberg, 1850=D. picipes Meigen, 1824; D. cruralis Wahlberg, 1850=D. lepidus Staeger, 1842; D. kowarzianus Stackelberg, 1928=D. longitarsis Stannius, 1831; D. lapponicus Becker, 1917=D. lepidus Staeger, 1842; D. micropygus Wahlberg, 1850=D. fraterculus Zetterstedt, 1843; D. parvicaudatus Zetterstedt, 1843=D. plumipes (Scopoli, 1763); D. pectinitarsis Stenhammar, 1851=D. plumipes (Scopoli, 1763) syn. nov.

A new species of ciid beetle from southwestern South Africa is described. Images of the habitus, male genitalia and other characters of the external morphology are provided. The observed variations of male secondary sexual characters are briefly discussed. The similarities of external morphological characters of Cis pickeri sp. nov. to other species of Cis Latreille are discussed, and the new species is tentatively included in the bilamellatus species group.

A new species Sybistroma genriki sp. n. from the Yunnan province of China is described. It belongs to S. incisa group of species, differing from other species in mostly yellow antenna with arista-like stylus much longer than postpedicel; postpedicel elongated, much longer than wide, acute apically; stylus apical, with dark and white apical swelling; lower postocular setae white; legs mostly yellow except mostly black mid and hind coxae and brown-black distal spot on hind femur. A key to 11 species from Sichuan and Yunnan is provided, based mainly on male secondary sexual characters. The known distribution of the dolichopodine genus Sybistroma Meigen, 1824, is briefly discussed.

The article describes two new species: Roepkiella jakli sp. nov. (type locality: Indonesia, Sangir Isl., Tahuna Distr., Bukit Bembalut Hill) and R. korshunovi sp. nov. (type locality: Thailand, Khon Kaen Prov., Phu Wiang Wat). The diagnostic features are given, the male genitalia of R. celebensis (Roepke, 1957) are described for the first time.

Artena uncinata sp. n. from the Philippines (Luzon) is described. This species is a third member of the A. lacteicincta-A. eccentrica group and can readily be separated from its closest allies by the reduced secondary sexual characters of the male and differences in the male genitalia.

The taxonomy of the T. bessonii, T. bonibony, T. dysalum, T. marginatum, T. tsingy, and T. weitzeckeri species groups isrevised. A total of 33 species is treated, of which 27 are newly described and one is raised to species status. The T.weitzeckeri group contains the single species T. humbloti Forel, which is of Afrotropical origin and the only representativeof the group in the Malagasy region. The species T. bessonii Forel, T. dysalum Bolton, T. marginatum Forel, and T. stein-heili Forel, which were originally members of the T. weitzeckeri group, are now placed in other groups. Tetramorium bes-sonii is the core species of the T. bessonii group, which also contains the four newly described species T. artemis sp. n., T.malagasy sp. n., T. ryanphelanae sp. n., T. wardi sp. n., and T. orientale Forel stat. n., which was a junior synonym of T.bessonii but is now raised to species rank. The T. dysalum group is a moderately-sized group with ten species, of whichonly T. dysalum and T. steinheili were previously known; the other eight species are all newly described. The newly described species in this group are: T. ambatovy sp. n., T. macki sp. n., T. mallenseana sp. n., T. orc sp. n., T. robitika sp. n.,T. sargina sp. n., T. yammer sp. n., and T. vohitra sp. n. A lectotype and several paralectotypes of T. steinheili are desig-nated. Tetramorium marginatum is the central species of the T. marginatum group, which also includes the five newly de-scribed species T. valky sp. n., T. hector sp. n., T. norvigi sp. n., T. shamshir sp. n., and T. silvicola sp. n. The T. bonibonyand T. tsingy groups represent completely new groups that consist entirely of previously unknown, undescribed species.The first group holds the new species T. bonibony sp. n., T. kali sp. n., T. sada sp. n., T. nosybe sp. n., T. olana sp. n., T.popell sp. n., and T. trafo sp. n. and T. vony sp. n. The last group, the T. tsingy group, only contains the two species T. tyrionsp. n. and T. tsingy sp. n., both among the rarest Tetramorium species in Madagascar. All groups are fully revised withillustrated species-level identification keys, and all species are described/re-described and illustrated with high qualitymontage images. In addition, the current status of the Malagasy Tetramorium species groups is discussed and further modifications are proposed.

Ranomafana pollocki sp. n. from Tamatave province, Madagascar, is described and illustrated; diverse generic morphological structures are provided; diagnostic features for this species are body colour and shape of accessory lobes in the male genitalia. This genus was known only from one specimen of the type species R. steineri Pollock, 1995.

Lathecla is a widespread, primarily montane, Neotropical genus. It consists of seven species that have a relatively uniform adult wing pattern coupled with a diverse set of male secondary sexual structures. Taxonomically, we describe five species — Lathecla mitzi Robbins new species, Lathecla fernandezi Robbins & Busby new species, Lathecla vichai Robbins & Busby new species, Lathecla carolyna Busby new species and Lathecla winnie Robbins & Busby new species and remove one name from synonymy — Thecla mimula Draudt, revised status. Evidence is presented for transferring Lathecla from the Thestius Section of the Eumaeini to the Micandra section, next to Podanotum. Topology of an inferred phylogenetic tree for Lathecla is stable when male secondary sexual characters are omitted or under a variety of implied weighting options. A scent patch on the cubital vein of the dorsal surface of the forewing is unique to Lathecla and evolved (and was not lost) in the ancestor of a four-species lineage. Its sister lineage contains two species. A scent patch on the ventral surface of the forewing evolved (and was not lost) in the ancestor of a six-species lineage in Lathecla. Its sister lineage contains one species. These results, along with previous data, show the viability for the Eumaeini of the hypothesis that the evolutionary gain of a male secondary sexual organ increases the rate of species diversification.

The first species of falklandellid amphipod outside the Falkland Islands: Osornodella gabrielae n. gen., n. sp. is described from freshwaters of subterranean origin in the Coastal Range of Osorno province, Chile. The new taxon is characterized principally by the absence of secondary sexual characters in pereopods 3–4, uropod 3 aequiramous and telson slightly cleft. The new species is described and illustrated and its morphological relationships with other known species of this group are discussed.

Trephionus Bates, 1883, a Japanese endemic genus in the subtribe Synuchina (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Sphodrini), is revised taxonomically based mainly on the shape of the endophallus, a membranous inner sac everted from the aedeagus of the male genitalia. Three known species from central Honshu, T. kinoshitai Habu, 1954; T. shibataianus Habu, 1978; and T. babai Habu, 1978, are re-defined based on this genital character, and five new species are described from the region: T. cylindriphallus Sasakawa, sp. n., T. niumontanus Sasakawa, sp. n., T. inexpectatus Sasakawa & Itô, sp. n., T. abiba Sasakawa & Itô, sp. n., and T. bifidilobatus Sasakawa & Itô, sp. n. The observed interspecies differences in endophallus morphology are discussed in terms of the species-level phylogeny and genus-level taxonomy of Trephionus.
