Review of the current knowledge of the systematics of Onchidiidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Pulmonata) with a checklist of nominal species

Because Onchidiidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Pulmonata) has been understudied since the last experts were active more than 70 years ago, systematics of this taxon is in a state of confusion: The nomenclatural status of most species names is unknown; the current supra-specific classification, largely based on Labbé’s work, has not been revised since the 1930s and needs to be re-evaluated through a modern, phylogenetic approach. A checklist of all 143 species names available in Onchidiidae is provided, as a first step towards a systematic revision. In addition, type material information (all existing types were examined by the author), type locality, and comments on the current taxonomic status and classification are provided for each species name. Present state of knowledge of the higher-level systematics of Onchidiidae is also briefly reviewed. Species diversity based on traditional generic taxa is presented. Finally, type localities are listed by region, worldwide, and interesting questions of biogeography are mentioned.

This catalog lists all 1226 nominal species introduced by Rondani within Diptera (1174 available and 52 unavailable), providing for each available name data on the type locality, type material, current taxonomic status and with remarks on both the collectors and the specialists who have studied this material.                 The following new synonymies are proposed: Panops aeneus Philippi, 1865 [Acroceridae] under Lasia aenea Rondani, 1863, n. syn.; Panops nigripes Philippi, 1865 [Acroceridae] under Lasia cuprea Rondani, 1863, n. syn.; Tabanus brasiliensis Rondani, 1850 [Tabanidae] under Dichelacera fasciata Walker, 1850, n. syn.; Petagnia subpetiolata Rondani, 1859 [Tachinidae] under Petagnia occlusa Rondani, 1856, n. syn.; Tephritis siderata Rondani, 1868 [Tephritidae] under Hexacinia radiosa (Rondani, 1868), n. syn. A list of types of the crustacean orders Anostraca (8 species), Diplostraca (5 species), Arguloida (3 species), Cyclopoida (1 species), Poecilostomatoida (8 species), Siphonostomatoida (2 species), Podocopida (4 species), Amphipoda (2 species), Isopoda (2 species), Mysida (2 species) and Decapoda (5 species) is presented. Species names are listed in systematical order, including type locality, collection number, current taxonomic status and original bibliographic reference. For parasite and commensal species, type host and site of infection are also provided.

Anomaloglossus is a species-rich genus of frogs endemic to the Guiana Shield that still harbors several unnamed species. Within the A. stepheni species group (which includes four valid nominal species), A. baeobatrachus has an uncertain taxonomic status, notably because the holotype was an unvouchered specimen depicted in a popular journal. Another member of this group, A. leopardus, was only superficially described, lacking information on the sex of specimens in the type series and on advertisement call. Therefore, these two taxa need clarifications in order to allow the description of the extant undescribed species. In this paper, we redescribe A. baeobatrachus based on newly collected material from the species type locality and provide information about its reproductive ecology. We also provide an amended definition of A. leopardus using newly collected material from its type locality. These two species form a clade along with a third species from the Eastern Guiana Shield, which is also described herein. The reproductive biology of A. baeobatrachus and A. stepheni is very similar. Both species have endotrophic and nidicolous tadpoles, despite being distantly related, suggesting independent evolution of this breeding mode. The new species and A. leopardus, on the other hand, have exotrophic tadpoles.

An updated taxonomic catalog of all 32 species of the subfamily Paramacronychiinae so far known to occur in China is presented. The catalog includes data on type locality, references, distribution and information on type material for nominal species with a Chinese type locality. Additional specimens deposited in the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Museum of Beijing Forestry University were examined. The genus Wohlfahrtiodes Villeneuve, 1910 and the species Wohlfahrtiodes marzinowskyi Rohdendorf, 1962 are new records from China. Two new synonyms are proposed: Wohlfahrtia Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889 = Sinotibetomyia Xue in Xue & Fei, 2011, syn. nov., and Wohlfahrtia atra Aldrich, 1926 = Sinotibetomyia curvifemura Xue & Fei, 2011, syn. nov.

Abstract Temnocephala axenos Monticelli, 1898 was described based on specimens from an unidentified host collected in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Information about type locality was imprecise and the host was later identified as Aegla laevis (Latreille, 1818). However, it is known that A. laevis is not present on the eastern side of the Andes. Also, only histological preparations from one specimen studied by Monticelli are currently available in the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, but it showed none of the taxonomic characters needed for the characterization of the species. Although the updated description of the species based on Uruguayan specimens, neither the author nor the several previous studies about the species showed a search for the type material, a resolution for the misidentification of the type host or the imprecise type locality due to the subsequent geographical division of the municipality cited in the description. The Uruguayan specimens were not even geographically close to the type locality and a neotype was not designed to validate the species’ taxonomic status again. Specimens from Santa Catarina and Paraná States, Brazil, were studied, as well as restudied Argentinean specimens. The new data were compared with the update description of the species. The historical background and the discussion about geographical origins and hosts of the species, as well as a designation of a neotype, allow comparative material of the type locality and type host to exist, eliminating doubts about the identification of T. axenos.

Four, morphologically similar species of crested newts (genus Triturus) meet and hybridize in Serbia, making a complex system with several hybrid zones. The puzzling and rapidly changing taxonomic status of crested newts has been a major issue in getting hold of their distribution. We provide an overview of the current knowledge on Triturus taxonomy and compile available faunistic data into a distribution map, highlighting the species contact and hybrid zones. At the present state of faunistic and genetic research, the northwestern , northeastern , Eastern and southeastern parts of Serbia transpire as areas that are exceptionally important for the diversity of crested newts.

AbstractThe taxonomic status and nomenclature of the golden lemming (Lemmus obensis chrysogaster)remained a puzzle for more than 100 years. It was considered either as an independent speciesLemmuschrysogasteror as a subspecies ofLemmus trimucronatusorLemmus sibiricus. In the most authoritative checklists, without further evidence, it was transferred to the synonym ofLemmus amurensis. However, the type material and specimens from type locality have not been revised since 1903. Here we fill this gap. The sequence of the cytochromebgene from topotype clearly indicates that the golden lemming is a younger synonym ofL. trimucronatus.

The catalog of type material deposited at the fish collection of the Museu de Ciências Naturais (MCN), Fundação Zoobotânica do Rio Grande do Sul, includes 315 specimens from 96 lots, representing six holotypes and 309 paratypes of 34 nominal species. Currently, two of them are synonymy and one have a questionable taxonomic status. Corrections and additional information from the original descriptions are included in the remarks for each species or lot. Photos of holotypes and paratypes are presented.

Among the ten species currently accepted in the genus Calliblepharis, the only representative in the Western Atlantic is C. occidentalis. The endemic Brazilian species C. jolyi was merged into Craspedocarpus, but its generic placement is unclear. Because some species superficially resemble flat Hypnea, our knowledge about the diversity and distribution of Calliblepharis could be incomplete. Therefore, to reassess species diversity of Calliblepharis in Brazil, we carried out an rbcL-based molecular survey of specimens collected along the Brazilian coast, including the type locality of C. jolyi (State of Espírito Santo). Molecular analysis of topotypes supported the reinstatement of Calliblepharis jolyi. This species was placed within Calliblepharis sensu lato in a fully supported clade with C. fimbriata, C. occidentalis, C. rammediorum and Calliblepharis sp. Calliblepharis jolyi is easily distinguished from its congeners by the presence of conspicuous lenticular thickenings. A new record of C. saidana, a species so far known only from the Indo-Pacific, was also revealed for the Atlantic Ocean. Samples collected in São Paulo were grouped with C. saidana from Japan (type locality) with rbcL intraspecific divergence of 0.8%. Taken together, our results provide a better understanding of flat Cystocloniaceae, focusing on Brazilian members and their affinities with other species. Our study call attention to the importance of a molecular approach in specimens from type localities, using information of the original descriptions to define their taxonomic status.

Members of the Leptodactylus mystaceus species complex are widely distributed in forests and open formations of South America east of the Andes. Species of the complex are morphologically similar or indistinguishable among each other, but acoustic data have been the cornerstone for species discrimination across their geographic ranges. In this paper, we re-examine the monophyly, species diversity, and relationships in the L. mystaceus complex on the basis of morphology, coloration, acoustics, and DNA sequences. Morphological and color patterns originally used to the allocation of species to the L. mystaceus complex are also reassessed. Our results revealed three new species from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and Cerrado, which are named and described herein, based mainly on acoustic and molecular data. Populations assigned to the lineage widely distributed across the South American Dry Diagonal (DD), reported in this study as L. cf. mystaceus, is likely paraphyletic with respect to the nominal species (Amazonian lineage), but additional data are still needed to address the taxonomic status of the DD lineage.
