A new species of the genus Tropidophorus Duméril & Bibron, 1839 (Squamata: Sauria: Scincidae) from Vietnam

A new species of the genus Tropidophorus is described from Hoang Lien Mountain, Sa Pa and Van Ban districts, Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam. Tropidophorus boehmei sp. nov. is characterized by the combination of the following features: size relatively large (maximum SVL 103.5 mm); upper head scales smooth; frontonasal undivided; prefrontals very small, widely separated; loreals 2, anterior loreal undivided; supralabials 6; supraciliaries 7–8, supraciliary row completed along the entire length of the lateral edge of supraoculars; external ear opening present, tympanum superficial, tympanum diameter smaller than eye length; midbody scales in 30–32 rows; dorsal and lateral scales on body and tail smooth; paravertebral scales 60–69, not widened; scale rows at position of tenth subcaudal 17–18; ventral scales 56–66; medial subcaudals divided from first to fifth, remaining ones about 1.5 times wider than neighboring scales; 16–19 smooth lamellae under fourth toe; dorsum and tail base dark grey with light transverse bands and two dorsolateral rows of white dots from neck to tail base; body sides dark grey with irregular small white dots from behind the eye to tail base. In addition, previous records of Tropidophorus berdmorei from northern Vietnam are discussed.

We describe a new species of the Rhacophorus genus, which differs from all species known in Asia by the combination of characters. It strongly differs also from small and middle-sized species of Rhacophorus sensu lato: Rhacophorus calcaneus Smith, 1924, Leptomantis cyanopunctatus (Manthey et Steiof, 1998), Rhacophorus hoabinhensis Nguyen, Pham, Nguyen, Ninh et Ziegler, 2017, Rhacophorus hoanglienensis Orlov, Lathrop, Murphy et Ho, 2001, Zhangixalus jarujini (Matsui et Panha, 2006), Rhacophorus laoshan Mo, Jiang, Xie et Ohler, 2008, Rhacophorus pardalis Günther, 1858, Rhacophorus rhodopus Liu et Hu, 1960, Rhacophorus robertingeri Orlov, Poyarkov, Vassilieva, Ananjeva, Nguyen, Sang, and Geissler, 2012, Leptomantis robinsonii (Boulenger, 1903), Rhacophorus spelaeus Orlov, Gnophanxay, Phimminith, and Phomphoumy, 2010, Rhacophorus translineatus Wu, 1977, Rhacophorus turpes Smith, 1940, Rhacophorus vampyrus Rowley, Le, Thi, Stuart et Hoang, 2010, Rhacophorus viridimaculatus Ostroshabov, Orlov et Nguyen, 2013 by having brown color with two green dorsolateral stripes starting at the groin level and connecting through the distal part of eyelid with green triangle on the head, slender body and head, lower ratio HW/HL 0.86, lower HW/SVL 0.28 and lower ratio HL/SVL 0.32.

We describe a new species of the gekkonid genus Gekko from northern Vietnam on the basis of four specimens from Lang Son and Lao Cai provinces. Gekko canhi sp. n. is distinguished from the remaining congeners by the combination of the following characters: body size moderate (SVL < 100 mm); supralabials 12–14, infralabials 10–13; nares in contact with rostral, internasal single, nasals 3; interorbitals 47–50; dorsal tubercle rows 10–13; scales between mental and cloacal slit 205–229; midbody scales 164–170; subdigital lamellae below first toe 13–16, below fourth toe 14–17; extensive webbing between fingers and toes minimal; tibial tubercles present; precloacal pores 5; postcloacal tubercles 2–3; tail round, not thickened at base; caudal tubercles present; subcaudals enlarged. We also provide new information on the taxonomy and distribution of G. japonicus in Vietnam.

The first record of the genus Karenia Distant, 1888 from Vietnam is presented. Karenia hoanglienensis sp. nov. (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) is described from Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam. Photographs of an adult male, illustrations of the male genitalia, a distribution map and biological data for K. hoanglienensis sp. nov. are provided.

Cylindratus fansipan sp. nov. is described from Lao Cai Province of Northern Vietnam. It is the first record of the genus Cylindratus Meng, Qin et Wang, 2020 from Vietnam and the fourth genus of the subfamily Caliscelinae known from the country. A 5th instar larva of the genus Cylindratus is described and illustrated for the first time. A key to the Vietnamese Caliscelini is given.

Erythroxylum calyptratum, sp. nov. (Erythroxylaceae), from Mt. Fansipan, Hoang Lien National Park, Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam, is newly described. The new species is characterized by thinly chartaceous leaves with 2–3 mm long petiole, 1–3 flowered inflorescences, downward facing white flowers, well-developed petal appendages (1/3–1/2 length of petals) and entirely free 3 styles. A description, illustrations, DNA barcodes of rbcL and matK and a key to the species of Erythroxylum in Indochina are provided.

Peliosanthes longiracemosa, a new species from limestone areas of northern Vietnam, is described and illustrated. It is most similar to P. macrostegia in having a distally incurved staminal corona and a distinct pyramidal style, but clearly distinguishable chiefly by the broader leaf blades with more longitudinal veins and closer transverse veinlets, relatively longer, more slender raceme, more numerous widely expanded flowers with recurved perianth segments, and more incrassate, depressed globose staminal corona. Information on the habitat and phenology as well as notes on the taxonomic relationships with other congeners is also provided.

A peltate-leaved species of Begonia was recently collected from a limestone hill in central Guangxi, China. Based on a careful study of literature, herbarium material, and plants both in the wild and in cultivation reveals that it is a new species of Begonia sect. Coelocentrum, which we hereby describe as B. ufoides. In addition to a full taxonomic account, color plates and line drawings are provided to aid in identification. Begonia ufoides may be confused with B. umbraculifolia Y. Wan & B.N. Chang in southwestern Guangxi and B. phuthoensis H.Q. Nguyen in northern Vietnam, both of which are peltate-leaved calciphilous species in sect. Coelocentrum, but the new species  is clearly distinguishable in many morphological characters. A table comparing salient features of the three species is presented.

The genus Aspidistra Ker Gawler (1822: 628) is represented in tropical and subtropical SE Asia by more than 160 species. It has the highest diversity in southern China and northern Vietnam (Tillich 2005, 2014, Tillich & Averyanov 2012, Vislobokov et al. 2013). In Vietnam, more than 50 species are known: many species have been discovered from the limestone regions in North Vietnam, while about 21 species are found from sandstone forests in Central and South Vietnam (Gagnepain 1934, Bogner & Arnautov 2004, Bräuchler & Ngoc 2005, Averyanov & Tillich 2012, 2013, 2016a, 2016b, Averyanov et al. 2016, Tillich 2005, 2014, Tillich & Averyanov 2008, Tillich et al. 2007, Leong-Škorničková et al. 2014, Vislobokov 2015, Vislobokov et al. 2013, 2014b, 2014c, 2016a, 2016b, Lý & Tillich 2016). During extensive floristic surveys in Central Vietnam in 2016, several interesting specimens of Aspidistra were collected by the first author. The critical examination of these specimens and study of literature for Aspidistra in Vietnam and neighbouring countries allowed to evidence several new taxa, two of which have been recently described: A. averyanovii Lý & Tillich (2016: 54) and A. parviflora Lý & Tillich (2016: 56). In the present paper, we describe a further new species from Cà Đam mountains, Quảng Ngãi Province, namely Aspidistra cadamensis.

A new species of Quercus (Fagaceae), Q. ngochoaensis, from Ba Vi National Park, Ha Noi, northern Vietnam is described and illustrated. This species is morphologically similar to Q. glauca in having glabrous twigs, cuneate leaf base, two or three fruits per infructescence, almost entire margin of lamellate rings on cupule except the lowest three rings, slightly convex scar at the base of a nut. However, it differs from Q. glauca in having smaller leaves, cup-shaped cupule enclosing 1/2–2/3 of the nut, 7–8 lamellate rings on cupule, and subglobose nut. In addition to the description, DNA barcodes of the two partial plastid regions of matK, rbcL and the nuclear region of ITS of the new species are provided.
