Fossil Ponerinae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Early Eocene amber of France

The French Early Eocene (Ypresian, 52–55 million-year-old) amber of Oise contains a rich and well-diversified myrmecofauna, which has remained unstudied until now. A recent survey of these fossil ants revealed 40 different species, among which nine belong to the subfamily Ponerinae. We describe here the two best-preserved morphotypes: a possible ergatoid queen representing the earliest known occurrence of the extant genus Platythyrea Roger, and described as a new species P. dlusskyi sp. n.; and a male morphotype related to the equivocal, paraphyletic genus Pachycondyla Smith, thus described herein but not formally assigned to genus until the male-based taxonomy of Ponerinae is better established. This fauna provides an ecological context to make inferences about the paleoenvironment of northwestern Europe during the PETM and gives new arguments for a radiation of modern ants at that time.

Embolemidae is a cosmopolitan but species-poor group of chrysidoid wasps with a scarce fossil record, despite a long evolutionary history since at least the Early Cretaceous. Here, the new species, Ampulicomorpha quesnoyensis sp. nov., is illustrated and described based on a single female found in Early Eocene amber of Oise (France). The new species is compared with the three other known fossil species of the genus, and a key to all fossil species of Ampulicomorpha is provided. This is the third European fossil species of Ampulicomorpha, which suggests that the genus was once well established in Western Europe while it is more widely distributed in the Eastern Palaearctic region today. A list of all fossil and extant Embolemidae of the world, as well as a map of their geographical distribution map, are provided.

A new species of the extant spider family Anapidae is described from a fossil mature male in Eocene amber from the Baltic region and tentatively assigned to the genus Balticoroma Wunderlich, 2004. Phase contrast X-ray computed micro-tomography was used to reveal important features that were impossible to view using traditional microscopy. Balticoroma wheateri new species is easily diagnosed from all other anapids by having clypeal extensions that run parallel to the ectal surface of the chelicerae and in having the metatarsus of the first leg highly reduced and modified into what is presumably a y-shaped clasping structure. Although only a single extant anapid species occurs in northern Europe, the family was diverse in the Eocene. The discovery of yet another anapid species in Baltic amber supports the idea that Eocene European forests may have been a hotspot of evolution for this family of spiders.

Recent survey of the epilithic diatoms in the running waters of Réunion Island led to the discovery of a new species of Achnanthidium. Achnanthidium palmeti sp. nov. belongs to the group of Achnanthidium taxa with terminal raphe fissures curved to the same side of the valve. The new species differs from other taxa in this group by a higher stria density and the areolae morphology along the axial area; moreover, apart from Achnanthidium latecephalum H. Kobayasi, A. palmeti sp. nov. is the only species having raphe vestiges. The new species was found in oligotrophic waters with very low conductivity and circumneutral pH.

AbstractArchaeochrysa sanikwanew species (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae: Nothochrysinae) is described from early Eocene (Ypresian) Okanagan Highlands shale at Driftwood Canyon, British Columbia, Canada. The evolutionary trends of three chrysopid wing venation characters (the shape of the intramedian cell, the position of the crossvein 2m-cu, and the development of the pseudocubitus) are analysed. The forewing venation of this species is very plesiomorphic compared with the vast majority species of Nothochrysinae, both fossil and extant.

The family Entomolepididae is represented in the South Atlantic Ocean solely by Spongiopsyllus, a monotypic genus found previously in association with sponges. A recent survey on the Boa Viagem Reefs, located off Salvador, Bahia State, on the northeastern region of Brazil, has revealed a new species of the genus, Spongiopsyllus redactus n. sp., found associated with the endemic scleractinian coral Mussismilia hispida (Verrill). The new species is distinguished from its congener, S. adventicius Johnsson, 2000, by differences in the number of segments of the antennule, the ornamentation of the distal endopodal segment of the antenna, and the setation of the maxilliped and P1. An updated key to the species of Entomolepididae is also provided.

Nearly complete lower dentitions (with c?, p2–4, m1–3) and the first discovered upper dentitions (with P2–4, M1–3) are described and illustrated for the late Paleocene primate Micromomys Szalay. These fossils, from the Paskapoo Formation of central Alberta, Canada, represent a new species, the geologically earliest known species of the genus. Micromomys appears to have been a primitive microsyopid most closely related to the early Paleocene Purgatorius Van Valen and Sloan and the middle Paleocene Palenochtha Gidley; a relationship between Micromomys and the early Eocene Tinimomys Szalay may not be as near as previous workers had supposed.Micromomys is the smallest primate known and was probably insectivorous. Its occurrence with the rare European primate Saxonella Russell, a new, primitive carpolestid, and an unusual mammal possibly related to palaeanodonts documents a facies not yet encountered in other Paleocene mammal local faunas, in Canada or elsewhere.

One new genus and three new species of Lygistorrhinidae in early Eocene Cambay amber from India are described, which significantly increases our knowledge about this group in the Eocene.Lygistorrhina indican. sp. is the oldest fossil known from this extant genus.Indorrhina sahniin. gen. et sp. shows morphological similarities to each of the two extant generaLygistorrhinaandAsiorrhina.Palaeognoriste orientaleis the third species known from a group that has only been recorded from Eocene Baltic amber before. The latter finding reveals faunal links between Cambay amber and the probably slightly younger Baltic amber, adding further evidence that faunal exchange between Europe/Asia and India took place before the formation of Cambay amber.
