A new species of Campsurus (Ephemeroptera: Polymitarcyidae: Campsurinae) from Argentina and Uruguay and redescription of C. evanidus and C. jorgenseni with new synonymies

The subfamily Campsurinae (Ephemeroptera: Polymitarcyidae) includes one of the most specious genera of Ephemeroptera, Campsurus (with 40 known species), with a Pan-American distribution and its greatest diversity in South America. The following new synonymies are proposed: C. evanidus Needham & Murphy, 1924 (=C. juradinus Navás, 1930) and C. jorgenseni Esben-Petersen, 1912 (=C. scutellaris Needham & Murphy, 1924). Redescriptions, drawings and photographs are provided for both species. C. vulturorum sp. nov. from Argentina and Uruguay is described and illustrated for all life stages. It is characterized, in the adult stage, by: very large size (male fore wings 15.9–20.5 mm, female fore wings 21.0–28.0 mm), posterior margin of male abdominal sternum IX convex and rounded, pedestals subrectangular with a short projection on outer-posterior margin; penes widely separated distally, each arm formed by two lobes; and in mature nymphs by: mandibular tusks robust with a large submedian tubercle and six subapical rounded and small tubercles, maxilla with a short flat and triangular membranous gill on cardo.

Deltamys is a monotypic sigmodontine rodent from the Pampas of South America. In addition to the formally recognized D. kempi that inhabits lowlands, an undescribed form Deltamys sp. 2n=40 was recently found in the highlands of southeastern Brazil. In the present study, we perform a phylogeographic reassessment of Deltamys and describe a third form of the genus, endemic to the Brazilian Araucaria Forest. We describe this new species based on an integrative analysis, using complete cytochrome b DNA sequences, karyology and morphology. Bayesian tree recovered two allopatric clades (lowlands vs. highlands) and three lineages: (i) the lowland D. kempi, (ii) the highland Deltamys sp. 2n=40, and (iii) Deltamys araucaria sp. n. Deltamys araucaria sp. n. is karyotypically (2n=34) and morphologically distinguishable from D. kempi (2n=37-38), showing a tawnier dorsum/flank pelage, presence of a protostyle, M1 alveolus positioned anteriorly to the posterior margin of the zygomatic plate, and several other distinguishing characteristics. A phylogeographic assessment of D. kempi recovered two haplogroups with significant differences in skull measurements. This phylogeographic break seems to have been shaped by the Patos Lagoon estuarine channel. The diversification in Deltamys might have been triggered by dispersal of older lineages over different altitudinal ranges in the Paraná geological basin.

In the present work a new species of Homoeoneuria is described based on nymphs and adults from Southeastern Brazil. Based on cladistics, the new species belongs to the subgenus Homoeoneuria.s.s. Homoeoneuria (H). watu sp. n., besides being the second species of the genus reported from South America, is the first representative of the subgenus from the region. The new species can be distinguished from the other described species of the genus by the following combination of characters: In the adult stage, (1) pronotum with prominent posteromedian pale yellow spot almost reaching anterior margin; (2) abdominal color pattern; (3) shape of penes. In the nymph, (1) head heavily washed with brownish-orange between compound eyes and ocelli; (2) antennal pedicels with short, thick setae; (3) small paired tubercles present on vertex and anterior margin of pronotum; (4) galea-lacinia of maxillae with submarginal row of 20–21 long, spinous setae; (5) abdominal color pattern. Comments on the biology of the new species are also provided.

Three species of the genus Allocosa Banks, 1900 from southern South America are redescribed: Allocosa alticeps (Mello-Leitão, 1944), A. brasiliensis (Petrunkevitch, 1910) and A. senex (Mello-Leitão, 1945). The female of A. senex is described for the first time and the species is revalidated. A new species, A. marindia sp. nov. from southern Uruguay and southern Brazil is described. The new species is distinguished by the flattened terminal apophysis of the male bulb and the conspicuous pointed projections on the posterior margin of the female epigynum. The species inhabits in sandy estuarine and oceanic coasts with psammophile vegetation.

A new species of Ophioderma Müller and Troschel, 1842 is described. The new species is the first fossil one of the genus, and the third ophiuroid described for the Tertiary of South America. It is characterized by its large size, proximal dorsal arm plates arched, entire or irregularly fragmented in two or three parts and lateral arm plates with four or five short, flat spines of similar length with a finger-like outline.

Abstract—A synopsis of Dicliptera (Acanthaceae) for Brazil is presented. Six species are recognized: Dicliptera ciliaris, D. sexangularis, and D. squarrosa, widely distributed in South America; D. purpurascens, which ranges from the North Region of Brazil (in the state of Acre) to eastern Bolivia; D. gracilirama, a new species from the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil; and D. granchaquenha, a new species recorded in dry and semideciduous forests in Bolivia and western Brazil, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Furthermore, we propose new synonyms and designate lectotypes for eleven names. An identification key to the six accepted Dicliptera species in Brazil is provided.

A new species of Polycentrusis described from the rio Negro, in Brazil. It is distinguished from P. schomburgkii by the presence of two dark postocular and one subocular band, all smaller than orbital diameter, blunt snout, isognathous mouth, reduction of the serrations on the lower edge of the lacrimal-spines ranging from zero to two tiny spines at the posterior end, intensely serrated edge of the interopercle, fully serrated posterior edge of the vertical arm of the preopercle, presence of five pungent opercular spines, subopercle broadly serrated along most of its posterior ventral edge, presence of serrations dorsally on the posterior margin of the cleithrum, fourth ray of pectoral fin reaching the vertical through the anal-fin origin, 19-21 predorsal scales, 19-20 scales on dorsal-fin base, 12-14 scales on anal-fin base, and absence of a median opercular blotch.

Paspalum chilense, a new species from Chile belonging to the informal Notata group, is described and illustrated on the basis of morphological, cytological and molecular evidence. Our evidence supports its affinity with P. barretoi and P. nummularium, from Brazil, from which it probably diverged by vicariant speciation. The limited available material of the new species was previously identified as P. pumilum or P. minus. A new key to the species of the core Notata group is provided.
