Revision of the Oocyclus Sharp of Brazil with description of ten new species(Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae: Laccobiini)

The Brazilian species of the water scavenger beetle genus Oocyclus Sharp, 1882 are revised. Fourteen species are recog-nized, including ten described as new from southern and southeastern Brazil: Oocyclus acuru sp. n., O. aeneus sp. n., O.alterosa sp. n., O. caparao sp. n., O. flexus sp. n., O. itapecori sp. n., O. itapicum sp. n., O. rotundus sp. n., O. xanthus sp.n., and O. yubai sp. n. New records for two of the three previously recorded Brazilian species, O. decorus (Kuwert) andO. fryanus Balfour-Browne, are given. One species, O. iguazu (Oliva), is newly recorded from the country as well as fromParaguay. The holotypes of O. fryanus and O. schubarti d’Orchymont are redescribed. A key and high-resolution imagesof each species are provided. Consistent with the biology of other members of the genus, all species are found in rocks seeps and other hygropetric habitats.

The genus Austrolimnius Carter & Zeck has its greatest known diversity in Oceania, but its fauna in the Americas is poorlyknown. In this paper, two new species—Austrolimnius uncatus sp. nov. and A. bocainensis sp. nov.—are described and illus-trated based on adult specimens collected at Serra da Bocaina National Park, São José do Barreiro Municipality, São PauloState, and Nova Friburgo Municipality, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Austrolimnius uncatus sp. nov. is characterized by the longsetae on the mesotarsus, the medial expansion of the hind tibiae, and the hook-like shape of the male genitalia. Austrolimniusbocainensis sp. nov. can be recognized by the absence of setae on the mid-tarsus, the cylindrical hind tibiae, and the slightlycurved genitalia with few setae. A pictorial key for the Brazilian species of the genus is given. New records of Brazilian species of the genus are reported.

A new species of the freshwater amphipod Hyalella Smith, 1874 is described for the plateau of the Itatiaia National Park, located between the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. This is the first Brazilian species of Hyalella found at more than 2,200 meters of altitude. The specimens were found in a small stream, buried under rocks, in the higher area of the Park. The main morphological characteristics that differentiate the new species are the extreme reduction of the size of the uropod 3, absence of apical setae on telson, absence of comb-scales on gnatopods 1 and 2, absence of curved seta on inner ramus of uropod 1 and sternal gills tubular on pereonites 3 to 7. The new species presents similarities with some cave species of the genus, apparently being troglophile and that is the process of adaptation to the hypogean habitat. The importance of creating new protected areas for the conservation of Hyalella in Brazil is discussed.

Of the 69 Neotropical species of Stylogaster, only one record was previously known from Northeastern Brazil (from Bahia state in 1985—S. brasilia Camras & Parrillo). Several specimens from this region housed at the MNRJ collection were studied, mostly from Bahia, Ceará and Pernambuco states. Two new records were obtained: S. macrura Lopes, 1938, previously known from São Paulo state (Southeastern Brazil), and S. souzai Monteiro, 1960, from Amapá and Pará (Northern Brazil). Descriptions of two new species, S. hugoi sp. nov. and  S. planitarsis sp. nov. are presented, as well as that of the previously unknown female of S. souzai. Illustrations and geographic distribution of the species are also provided.

Herein we provide a taxonomic revision of Phyllodoce species from Brazil, describing 10 new species in addition to two new records, Phyllodoce longipes Kinberg, 1866 and Phyllodoce cf. madeirensis Langerhans, 1880. Phyllodoce sp. A. and Phyllodoce sp. B. are probably new but the number and condition of available specimens do not provide adequate and reliable diagnostic features for a formal description. These species have been collected in diverse marine and estuarine environments from shallow estuarine bottoms to continental shelf and slope sediments and submarine canyons from off southern and southeastern Brazil. A key to the fourteen species of Phyllodoce occurring in Brazil is also given.

A new species of the genus Charinus—C. vulgaris— is described from Porto Velho, Rondônia. This is the first record of the family Charinidae from the Brazilian Amazonia and of a synanthropic species in South America. Additionally, two new records of the genus for Brazil are made and a key to the Brazilian species of the genus is given.

Syringogaster papaveroi Prado, 1969 is redescribed from southeastern Brazil, and S. fapeam, n. sp., is described from the upper Rio Negro, state of Amazonas. The known range of S. apiculata Marshall and Buck, 2009, previously known from Amazonian Peru and Ecuador, is extended for the first time to Brazil. The phylogenetic tree and key of Marshall et al., 2009 are emended to include the new species and new information on S. papaveroi.

We describe seven species of Pilargidae from the coast and deep sea (300–1400 m deep) of southeastern Brazil, belonging to the genera Ancistrosyllis McIntosh, 1878, Cabira Webster, 1879, Glyphohesione Friedrich, 1950, Hermundura Müller, 1858, and Pilargis Saint-Joseph, 1899. Of those, two are new species (Glyphohesione campensis sp. nov. and Pilargis falconae sp. nov.) and two are new records of Ancistrosyllis for Brazil. Glyphohesione campensis sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by fewer neurochaetae, the anteriormost appearance of first notopodial spines, and intermediate relative length of dorsal and ventral cirri. Pilargis falconae sp. nov. is diagnosed by the presence of parapodial glands from the first chaetiger on the dorsal surface and from the sixth chaetiger on the ventral surface; and neurochaetae smooth capillaries and limbates with unidentate tips. Keys to pilargid species reported from, or likely to occur in, Brazilian waters are provided.
