Abstract A new species of coprophagous scarabaeid, Synapsis puluongensis sp. nov., is described based on six specimens collected in Pu Luong Nature Reserve in central Vietnam. The new species can be clearly distinguished from the remaining species of Synapsis Bates, 1868 by the following characters: hypomeral cavities present but not covered by red macrosetae; mesepisternal cavities absent; elytral striae extremely strong, bearing close and strong punctures; metafemora with dense and strong punctures in ventral view. Redescription of S. horaki Zídek & Pokorný, 2010 based on new material is also presented. Key to species of the genus Synapsis from Vietnam is provided.

Loxostigma puhoatense N.D. Do et al., sp. nov., a new species of Gesneriaceae, is described and illustrated from Pu Hoat Nature Reserve, Nghe An Province, Vietnam. This species is morphologically similar to L. dongxingensis and L. damingshanensis in the plant habit, indumentum system of vegetative and reproductive characters, shape of leaf blades, calyx, pistil but differs from the latter two by the abaxially reddish-purple leaf blade with pubescent along veins, lateral veins 11–19, shorter white to pale yellowish-white corolla (3.7–3.8 cm long) with purple-spotted and glabrous inside, longer abaxial stamens in 2–2.1 cm, shorter and densely glandular-puberulent ovary in 1–1.2 cm, and sparsely glandular-puberulent style. Data on distribution, ecology, phenology, and vernacular of the new species are provided.

Schizostachyum dakrongense is a new species of woody bamboo from Dakrong Nature Reserve, Quang Tri Province, central Vietnam. It is closely related to S. hainanense but differs by its pseudospikelets having terminal rachilla segments with ciliate margin and 6 bracts; culm sheath with the base of the outer margin having a slight projection below its point of attachment at the node, as well as sheath blades usually less than half as long as the culm sheath proper; and leaf blades pale-puberulent and sparsely pilosulous on the abaxial surface. The new species is described and illustrated here.

Camellia yenhoae (Theaceae) is described as a new species of section Piquetia from Hon Ba Nature Reserve, Khanh Hoa province, Central Vietnam. The new taxon is close to C. piquetiana, but differs from the later by having ovate, slightly longitudinally striated and 3‒4-locular ovaries and 3‒4 styles connate at basal 1/5‒1/3 part and glabrous on apical 1/4 part. A key to all known species of the section is given.

A species of the genus Isoperla Banks, 1906, I. oncocauda Huo & Du, sp. nov. is described as new to science and is the first record for the family Perlodidae from the Tianmu Mountain Nature Reserve, Zhejiang Province of eastern coastal China. Both sexes of the new species are characterized by tergum 10 with a developed process. The partially extruded aedeagus of the male is membranous without conspicuous larger sclerites and with the ventral surface covered with dense scale-like and nail-shaped spines.

The genus Aspidistra Ker Gawler (1822: 628) is represented in tropical and subtropical SE Asia by more than 160 species. It has the highest diversity in southern China and northern Vietnam (Tillich 2005, 2014, Tillich & Averyanov 2012, Vislobokov et al. 2013). In Vietnam, more than 50 species are known: many species have been discovered from the limestone regions in North Vietnam, while about 21 species are found from sandstone forests in Central and South Vietnam (Gagnepain 1934, Bogner & Arnautov 2004, Bräuchler & Ngoc 2005, Averyanov & Tillich 2012, 2013, 2016a, 2016b, Averyanov et al. 2016, Tillich 2005, 2014, Tillich & Averyanov 2008, Tillich et al. 2007, Leong-Škorničková et al. 2014, Vislobokov 2015, Vislobokov et al. 2013, 2014b, 2014c, 2016a, 2016b, Lý & Tillich 2016). During extensive floristic surveys in Central Vietnam in 2016, several interesting specimens of Aspidistra were collected by the first author. The critical examination of these specimens and study of literature for Aspidistra in Vietnam and neighbouring countries allowed to evidence several new taxa, two of which have been recently described: A. averyanovii Lý & Tillich (2016: 54) and A. parviflora Lý & Tillich (2016: 56). In the present paper, we describe a further new species from Cà Đam mountains, Quảng Ngãi Province, namely Aspidistra cadamensis.

Based on genetic, morphological and chromatical comparisons we evaluate the taxonomic status of two southern Vietnamese forest-dwelling populations of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis species complex. We confirm the allocation of the population from Binh Chau—Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve (Ba Ria—Vung Tau Province) to C. cattienensis and we describe the population of Nui Chua National Park (Ninh Thuan Province) as Cyrtodactylus sangi sp. nov. This brings to 18 the number of species within the C. irregularis complex and to 41 the number of described Cyrtodactylus species recorded from Vietnam.

Typhonium phuocbinhense has been described as a new species from central Vietnam. The plant grows on sand-soil in the gaps of rocks and the banks of stream line in the Phuoc Binh National Park of Ninh Thuan Province. The species is different from all other species in the genus. It is closest to T. varians from Thailand but differs from this species by having leaves not variegated, spathe tube brown and spathe lamina much narrower and staminodes folded 180o at apex. Beside that the species key of Typhonium in Vietnam and the species information of distribution, ecology, habitat and conservation are also introduced.

Clivia mirabilis Rourke is a new pendulous tubular-flowered species from Oorlogskloof Nature Reserve in Northern Cape. Its distribution area is some 800 km outside the previously accepted range of the genus Clivia. This sun-tolerant species is adapted to an arid Mediterranean climate, producing vegetative growth in winter and maturing its seeds rapidly in late summer/early autumn to synchronize with the arrival of winter rains.
