A second new species of Nanophyllium Redtenbacher, 1906 from the northern coast of New Guinea (Phasmida, Phylliidae)

A new species of leaf insect, Nanophyllium larssoni n. sp. is described and illustrated bringing the known species in the genus to a total of six. Like all species of Nanophyllium Redtenbacher, 1906, the new species is named from a single male specimen, which is deposited in the San Diego Natural History Museum. With this newly identified species, two clear species-groups emerge and are described, in detail, in the species key. Measurements of anatomical figures were made to the nearest 0.1 mm.

A new species of leaf insect, Phyllium (Phyllium) fallorum n. sp. is described and illustrated. In addition a key to the current known species of Phyllium Illiger, 1798 from the Philippines is provided. This species is currently only known from the single unique holotype, which will be deposited in the San Diego Natural History Museum. Measurements of anatomical figures were made to the nearest 0.1 mm. Photos were taken using a Canon 5D Mark II and a MP-E 65mm macro lens and stacked using Zerene photo stacking software, version 1.04, 64-bit. Currently, ten species of Phyllium Illiger, 1798 have been described from the Philippines, with Phyllium (Phyllium) fallorum n. sp. the eleventh. Of the eleven known species from the Philippines, five are only known from female specimens.

Dichagyris is a diverse genus with a Holarctic distribution. Only a few taxa of the subgenus Albocosta Fibiger & Lafontaine, 1997 occur in the northwesternmost part of the Oriental region. The genus is most diverse in Turkey, Iran and the Central Asiatic high mountains. However, there is a distinct Sino-Tibetan group of species, possibly representing an undescribed subgenus. However, this idea is provisional and awaits revision of the genus. For present purposes, we assign these species to the subgenus Dichagyris. They share the following putative synapomorphies: black, dark brown or dark greyish forewing ground colour (with one exception), with obscure, reduced wing pattern and a broad-based, short, conical harpe in the male genitalia. Species of this group can be subdivided to two species-groups. In the astigmata-group which was mentioned for the first time by Hreblay et al. (1998) but without description or diagnosis from the minuta-group, the vesica is elongate and tubular (males), the appendix bursae and corpus bursae are long, sack–like, almost equal in size (females). In the minuta-group, the vesica is more ample than in the astigmata-group, and coiled, and the appendix bursae is globular and much shorter than the corpus bursae. The astigmata-group includes Dichagyris astigmata (Hampson, 1906), D. gansuensis Hreblay & Ronkay, 1998, D. geochroides (Boursin, 1948) and D. vargazoli (Gyulai & Ronkay, 2001). The minuta-group comprises D. minuta Hreblay & Plante, 1998 and D. kormos Gyulai & Ronkay, 2001. During a research expedition in Sichuan in 2019, the existence of a third species in the minuta-group was recognized, which is described here. In addition, the female and its genitalia of D. gansuensis, which was described by Hreblay & Ronkay (1998) based on a single male, are illustrated here for the first time.

Recently, we (Akkari & Enghoff 2011) described a new species of the genus Rharodesmus Schubart, 1960, discussing the taxonomic state of the family Pyrgodesmidae and providing notes on the four genera occurring in the west Palaearctic area. However, we failed to present details on the holotype of the new species, which we now provide in this note in order to make the species name available. Thus, we describe here the new species Rharodesmus tabarkensis Akkari & Enghoff by reference to the full description given in Akkari & Enghoff (2011) with the following information on the type material: Holotype ♂, TUNISIA, NW, Jendouba Governorate, Tabarka, N36°57.8, E8°44.6, alt. < 40 m, coastal slope below the Genoese fort, under stones, 9.iii.2009, N. Akkari & H. Enghoff leg. (Natural History Museum of Denmark, Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen, ‒ ZMUC); Paratypes: 12 ♂♂, 8 ♀♀, 14 juveniles, same locality and date as holotype, N. Akkari & H. Enghoff leg. (ZMUC).

A new species of Amphiesma is described from the Truong Son (Annamite mountain range) of Quang Binh Province in central Vietnam. This new species is characterized by the combination of the distinct coloration and pattern, the slender body and tail (tail/total length ratio 0.31), the large eye diameter, a single loreal and preocular, three postoculars, a single anterior and posterior temporal, nine supralabials (fourth to sixth reach the eye), nine infralabials, 179 ventrals (plus two preventrals), anal plate divided, 99 divided subcaudals, dorsal scales in 19-19-17 keeled rows, 34 maxillary teeth (the two posteriormost enlarged), hemipenis simple, with undivided sperm groove, covered with small spines except for a single, strongly enlarged spine next to the sperm groove at the hemipenis base and except for irregularly arranged medium-sized spines that encircle the organ horizontally at the trunco-pedicel area. The new taxon is known only from a single male specimen that was collected in a limestone forest valley.

The recently described dung beetle tribe Byrrhidiini currently comprises seven genera and nineteen species (Davis et al. 2019). During a recent collecting expedition to the Brandberg Mountain [S21.11° E14.69°] in Namibia, a single male specimen, together with various disarticulated body parts of a new species belonging to this tribe were collected. It was found amongst dried hyrax (Procavia capensis) dung pellets between large granite boulders. This new species clearly fits the current definition of the genus Versicorpus Deschodt, Davis & Scholtz, 2011. This raises the number of the constituent species of Versicorpus to three and that for Byrrhidiini to twenty.

The Neotropical scale insect genus Ripersiella Tinsley (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Rhizoecidae) was investigated, based on soil samples deposited at the Hungarian Natural History Museum. Description and illustration of a new species, Ripersiella incarum Kaydan & Szita sp. n., and an identification key and new additional locality records for the currently known Ripersiella species in the Neotropical region, are provided and discussed.

Abstract The French pharmacist and explorer Christoph-Augustin Lamare-Picquot (1785–1873) was in South Asia during 1826–1829 to collect ethnographical, anthropological, zoological and botanical specimens. He made an excursion to the Sundarbans (the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta) of Bangladesh, where on 17 November 1828 his team shot a female rhinoceros and caught her young one the next day, just south of Khulna. Both animals were completely hornless. He returned to France in the spring of 1830, where his zoological specimens were assessed by Georges Cuvier, and his other collections relating to ethnography by other scholars. All recommended purchase by the French Government, but circumstances did not allow this. A few animals were described by scientists connected with the Natural History Museum in Paris. After Lamare-Picquot published an account of the hunting expedition in 1835, the rhinoceros was described as a new species Rhinoceros inermis, by René-Primivère Lesson, first in a supplement to Buffon dated 1836, and not, as accepted until now, in restatements dating from 1838 or later. The main part of the zoological collection was bought by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1836 and integrated in museums in Berlin. Other collections were exhibited as a “Panthéon Indien” in Vienna and Bratislava from 1838, until they were purchased by the Bavarian King Ludwig in 1841, and added to a museum in Munich. The type specimens of R. inermis are still preserved in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. The adult female (ZMB_Mam_1957) was selected as the lectotype.

Abstract. E. H. Jørgensen’s radiolarian collection is stored at the Natural History Museum in Oslo and holds 93 slides, of these 76 are with plankton from the western and northern coast off Norway. Jørgensen described 43 new polycystine radiolarian species from this material, but did not assign any types. In this present study we have re-examined the collection, registered and photographed all slides and radiolarian specimens, and designated lectotypes and paralectotypes for many of Jørgensen’s species.
