Review of the genus Argyresthia Hübner, [1825] (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutoidea: Argyresthiidae) from China, with descriptions of forty-three new species

The Chinese fauna of Argyresthia Hübner, [1825] included by 14 described species prior to this study. In the present paper we describe 43 new species and record seven species new to China. We also recognized six known Chinese species based on the available specimens; eight species previously reported for the fauna, but without available specimens for examination, are systematically placed in their relevant positions. The total species number of Argyresthia in China is brought to 64. The new species include: A. (Blastotere) aureola, sp. nov., A. (B.) sporadolepis, sp. nov., A. (B.) cineretra, sp. nov., A. (B.) affinicineretra, sp. nov., A. (B.) albaureola, sp. nov., A. (B.) densa, sp. nov., A. (B.) punctireticulata, sp. nov., A. (B.) dolichocoremata, sp. nov., A. (B.) longipenella, sp. nov., A. (Argyresthia) biloba, sp. nov., A. (A.) minutilepidota, sp. nov., A. (A.) flavifusca, sp. nov., A. (A.) trigonophylla, sp. nov., A. (A.) chiotorna, sp. nov., A. (A.) hirsuta, sp. nov., A. (A.) papillata, sp. nov., A. (A.) acuminata, sp. nov., A. (A.) curvativa, sp. nov., A. (A.) atomata, sp. nov., A. (A.) orthocera, sp. nov., A. (A.) cardiopetala, sp. nov., A. (A.) mala, sp. nov., A. (A.) convexa, sp. nov., and A. (A.) ellipsoidea, sp. nov.        The newly record species include: A. (A.) pygmaeella ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775), A. (A.) retinella Zeller, 1839, A. (A.) angusta Moriuti, 1969, A. (A.) alpha Friese & Moriuti, 1968, A. (A.) beta Friese & Moriuti, 1968, A. (A.) kaoyaiensis Moriuti, 1982, and A. (A.) dislocata Meyrick, 1914. The male of A. (A.) trochaula Meyrick, 1938, and the male and female genitalia of A. (A.) aphoristis Meyrick, 1938 and A. (A.) dislocata are described for the first time. The misidentified species A. (A.) assimilis Moriuti, 1977 in China is described as A. (A.) mala, sp. nov. Argyresthia cryptomeriae Yang, nomen non rite publicatum, is validated as Argyresthia anthocephala Meyrick, 1936. Keys to the subgenera and to the Chinese species with available specimens are provided.        Photos of adults and male and female genitalia are provided for all the examined species except two from Taiwan. Field photographs and biological information are provided where available. Five DNA barcode sequences of the two new species, A. (A.) surrecta, sp. nov. and A. (A.) lanosa, sp. nov., are provided for association of the sexes.

A new species Ypsolopha rhinolophi Corley is described from northern Portugal and south-east France. It resembles Y. alpella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) and Y. lucella (Fabricius, 1775) but shows clear differences from both species in DNA barcode and in male and female genitalia. Male genitalia of Y. lucella are illustrated for the first time. The new species has been collected at light, reared from larvae on Quercus pyrenaica Willd. and recognised from DNA barcode fragments obtained from droppings of horseshoe bats.

The genus Olepa is distributed in Palearctic and Oriental regions with more species in India and Sri Lanka. In the recent studies, morphological variations within the group were well established, with couple of first set of mt COI DNA barcodes for at least three species. In the present account, three new species and a new subspecies are described from the northern Western Ghats region of Maharashtra based on mt COI DNA barcode studies. Due to high morphological divergence and complete genetic homogeneity on the mt COI DNA, four morphotypes under two species are reported. Morphological and genital characters of male and female are provided along with their respective species morphotypes for the first time under this genus from India. The genitalia and the habitus of male and female are illustrated. Preliminary phylogenetic tree based on the mt COI DNA sequences available in the GenBank for the genus with the sequences for the new species also provided and discussed. Key words: new taxa, morphotype, Maharashtra, DNA barcoding, mt COI gene

Abstract The family Lecithoceridae in Bhutan is reviewed, with descriptions of a new species of Torodora Meyrick, 1894 (T. namgaydemae Park & Gielis, sp. n.), and a new species of Thubana Walker, 1864 (Th. bhutanica Park & Gielis, sp. n.). In addition, eight species are reported for the first time: Torodora multispinata Park, 2020; T. macrosigna Gozmány, 1973; T. trigona Gozmány, 1973; T. quadrangulata Wadhawan & Walia, 2007; Lecithocera cornutima Park, 2009; L. nepalica Gozmány, 1973; Homaloxestis cicatrix Gozmány, 1973 and Eccedoxa selena Wu, 1994. Images of the adults, male and female genitalia for the new species, and newly recorded species are provided.

The genus Robinsonia Grote, 1866 is partially reviewed following a large DNA barcode campaign. In the Robinsonia praphoea Dognin, 1906 group three new species are described: R. simulans sp. n. from French Guiana, up to now confused with R. praphoea itself and then R. decaensi sp. n. and R. maranhensis sp. n. both from the lower Amazon. R. drechseli sp. n. is described from Paraguay and R. inexpectata sp. n., a species close to R. mera (Schaus, 1910) from Costa Rica, is described as new from Peru and Bolivia. Finally the full species status is confirmed for R. flavicorpus Dognin, 1910 which is found to be differentiable from R. marginata Rothschild, 1909. All types are figured along with the male genitalia for most and some female genitalia for all studied species.

Four new species of Euphyllodromia Shelford, 1908 (E. spathulata, E. nigromaculata, E. neoelegans and E. spiculata) are described. Their male genitalia are illustrated. The female genitalia of E. spiculata and E. nigromaculata are also illustrated. Diagnostic characters of the head, thorax and abdomen of E. amazonensis Rocha e Silva, 1984 are reiterated, illustrated and combined with the description of the male and female genitalia for the first time. A key is provided to include the species treated here.

The Barsine zebrina species-complex is revised. Three new species, Barsine subzebrina Volynkin & Černý, sp. nov. (Nepal, NE India, N Myanmar), Barsine bucseki Volynkin & Černý, sp. nov. (Malay Peninsula) and Barsine navneetsinghi Volynkin & Černý, sp. nov. (NE India and N Myanmar) are described. A new combination is established: Barsine zebrina (Moore, 1878), comb. nov. Tettigonia sanguinicollis Latreille, 1811, and its junior synonym Tettigonia farinaria Amyot & Serville, 1843, are herein transferred to the genus Onega Distant, 1908. Thus, the previously incertae sedis genus Paragonalia Evans, 1947 (type-species: T. sanguinicollis), becomes a new junior synonym of Onega. Onega sanguinicollis comb. nov. is redescribed and its female genitalia are described and illustrated for the first time. A color variant of Onega fassli Young, 1977 is described. Three new species of Onega are described and illustrated: O. freytagi sp. nov. from Colombia (Cauca Department), O. krameri sp. nov. from Ecuador (Azuay and Bol var provinces), and O. orphne sp. nov. from Ecuador (Bol var and Pichincha provinces). A key to all nine species now included in Onega is provided along with notes on the distribution of the species. O. bracteata Young, 1977 is newly recorded from Azuay province (Ecuador) and Jun n and Pasco departments (Peru), and O. fassli is newly recorded from Ecuador (Napo Province) and Cundimarca Department (Colombia). Records of Onega from Cuba are considered doubtful.

Present paper contains description of a new species, Afrasura tanzaniae Volynkin, sp. nov. from Tanzania. The new species is related to Afrasura rivulosa (Walker, 1854). Male of Afrasura pallescens Durante, 2009 is illustrated here for the first time, with its re-description provided. Afrasura terlineata Durante, 2009 is transferred to the genus Siccia Walker, 1854: Siccia terlineata (Durante, 2009), comb. nov. Adults, male and female genitalia of all species mentioned are illustrated.

Two species of Endoclita C. &. R. Felder, 1874 from Taiwan are evaluated for their taxonomic status: Endoclita meifenga Buchsbaum & Grehan sp. n. is described as new for a unique male from the central mountains of Taiwan, and E. kosemponis (Strand, 1916), stat. rev. is elevated to species status. We show that the forewing markings and genitalic characteristics of E. meifenga sp. n. distinguish this species from all other Endoclita. The external appearance of E. kosemponis is similar to E. sinensis (Moore, 1877) but the two species show distinct differences in the male and female genitalia. Preliminary comparison of E. sinensis from Taiwan and Japan suggests they represent more than one species. A sample of the COI gene was sequenced for E. meifenga sp. n. and the primary types of E. meifenga sp. n. and E. kosemponis sp. n. are illustrated here for the first time. The taxonomic status of the non endemic Taiwanese E. davidi (Poujade, 1886) and E. sinensis needs future evaluation.

The Ellimenistes humeralis Marshall, 1947 species group is defined. Ellimenistes humeralis is redescribed, three new species belonging to this species group are described, illustrated and keyed: E. janaki Borovec & Nakládal, sp. nov., E. marshalli Borovec & Nakládal, sp. nov. and E. raucus Borovec & Nakládal, sp. nov., all from South Africa, Eastern Cape. A lectotype of Ellimenistes humeralis Marshall, 1947 is designated. The diagnosis of the genus Ellimenistes is completed with illustrations of the female genitalia provided for the first time.
