Here, we report the new occurrences of four deep-water prawn of the genus Gennadas in the southwestern Atlantic: G. gilchristi recorded from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge region; G. capensis recorded from Brazilian waters off Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Atol das Rocas and Ceará Chain; G. talismani and G. scutatus recorded both to Mid-Atlantic Ridge and to Brazilian waters.

This is the first in a series of reports describing new records caught with circle hooks, a method only now being employed in exploratory fishing in Brazilian deep waters. Several new records of deep-water fishes were obtained with this equipment. In this paper we record for the first time the occurrence of two genera and species of Bramidae in Brazilian waters: the tropical pomfret Eumegistus brevorti and the keeltail pomfret Taractes rubescens. We also report on previously unnoticed collection records from preserved specimens of Pterycombus brama in museum collections, and the first capture of an adult bigscale pomfret Taractichthys longipinnis in Brazil. These new records increase the number of bramid species known from Brazilian waters to ten. The addition of P. brama to the Brazilian Bramidae makes the Southwestern Atlantic the only known area of the world where two species of Pterycombus are found together. Meristic, biometric, and new biological data are presented for Eumegistus brevorti. Some species of bramids are rather rare and even if well described in the literature there are morphological characters and behavioral aspects yet to be added. Herein we present detailed descriptions of some bramid species to add to their published descriptions. A key to the Western Atlantic Bramidae is provided.

We describe seven species of Pilargidae from the coast and deep sea (300–1400 m deep) of southeastern Brazil, belonging to the genera Ancistrosyllis McIntosh, 1878, Cabira Webster, 1879, Glyphohesione Friedrich, 1950, Hermundura Müller, 1858, and Pilargis Saint-Joseph, 1899. Of those, two are new species (Glyphohesione campensis sp. nov. and Pilargis falconae sp. nov.) and two are new records of Ancistrosyllis for Brazil. Glyphohesione campensis sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by fewer neurochaetae, the anteriormost appearance of first notopodial spines, and intermediate relative length of dorsal and ventral cirri. Pilargis falconae sp. nov. is diagnosed by the presence of parapodial glands from the first chaetiger on the dorsal surface and from the sixth chaetiger on the ventral surface; and neurochaetae smooth capillaries and limbates with unidentate tips. Keys to pilargid species reported from, or likely to occur in, Brazilian waters are provided.

Three species of deep water hermit crabs of the genus Parapagurus Smith, 1879, family Parapaguridae, were collected in the South Atlantic during studies of the fauna and ecology of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a seamount chain that is an important habitat, feeding ground, and site of reproduction for many open ocean and deep-sea species. The three species collected, P. abyssorum (Filhol, 1885), P. nudus (A. Milne-Edwards, 1891), and P. pilosimanus Smith, 1879, are known to range broadly in the Atlantic, but only one, P. pilosimanus, was previously reported from the South Atlantic. Thus, P. abyssorum and P. nudus are reported for the first time from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the South Atlantic. These three species live in association with zoanthids or actinians that produce carcinoecia and serve as housing. The carcinoecia found with the specimens are also reported.

We report the first record of two teleost species from two archipelagos in the western equatorial Atlantic. We recorded the occurrence of Cantherhines pullus (Ranzani, 1842) (Monacanthidae, Tetraodontiformes) from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, a group of volcanic islands 345 km off the northeastern coast of Brazil. We also report the first regional record of Hemiramphus brasiliensis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Hemiramphidae, Beloniformes) from the Saint Peter and Saint Paul’s Archipelago, which is a small and isolated group of rocky islands 520 km from the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Thirty-six species of various thecate hydroids occur in two recent, deep-water collections from off New Caledonia. Of these, nine are new, namely Solenoscyphus subtilis Galea, sp. nov., Hincksella immersa Galea, sp. nov., Synthecium rectangulatum Galea, sp. nov., Diphasia alternata Galea, sp. nov., Dynamena opposita Galea, sp. nov., Hydrallmania clavaformis Galea, sp. nov., Symplectoscyphus acutustriatus Galea, sp. nov., Symplectoscyphus elongatulus Galea, sp. nov. and Zygophylax niger Galea, sp. nov. The male and female gonothecae of Caledoniana decussata Galea, 2015, the female gonothecae of Caledoniana microgona Galea, 2015, as well as the gonothecae of both sexes of Solenoscyphus striatus Galea, 2015 are described for the first time. The systematic position of the genera Solenoscyphus Galea, 2015 and Caledoniana Galea, 2015 is discussed on both morphological and molecular grounds, and both are confidently placed within the family Staurothecidae Maronna et al., 2016. In light of the molecular data, the genera Billardia Totton, 1930 and Dictyocladium Allman, 1888 are assigned to the families Syntheciidae Marktanner-Turneretscher, 1890 and Symplectoscyphidae Maronna et al. , 2016, respectively. The previously undescribed gonothecae of Hincksella neocaledonica Galea, 2015, and the male gonothecae of Sertularella tronconica Galea, 2016, were found. Thyroscyphus scorpioides Vervoort, 1993, a peculiar hydroid with putative stem nematothecae, is redescribed and assigned to the new genus Tuberocaulus Galea, gen. nov. Noteworthy new records from the study area are: Tasmanaria edentula (Bale, 1924), Hincksella sibogae Billard, 1918, Dictyocladium reticulatum (Kirchenpauer, 1884), Salacia sinuosa (Bale, 1888) and Billardia hyalina Vervoort & Watson, 2003. Most species are illustrated to facilitate their identification, and the morphology of the new ones is compared to that of their related congeners.

The Brazilian expeditions Revizee and Oceanprof collected samples from the southwest Brazilian coast between depths of 200 and 2200m. These expeditions sampled eleven species ofOplophoridae, ten of them new records for Southwestern Atlantic: Oplophorus gracilirostris A. Milne Edwards, 1881; O. spinosus (Brullé, 1839); Acanthephyra eximia A Milne Edwards, 1881; A. acutifrons Bate, 1888; A. quadrispinosa Kemp, 1939; A. stylorostratis (Bate, 1888); Ephyrina benedicti Smith, 1885; Janicella spinicauda (A. Milne Edwards, 1883); Notostomus elegans A. Milne Edwards, 1881; Systellaspis debilis (A. Milne Edwards, 1881) and S. pellucida (Filhol, 1885). The specimens are described and figured.

This paper reports the occurrence of four deep waters shrimps of the family Solenoceridae in the southwestern Atlantic, Brazil. The rare Hadropenaeus modestus is collected for the second time from Brazilian waters after 138 years, filling the gaps on its distributional pattern. Mesopenaeus tropicalis is a new register for Potiguar basin, although it is common along Brazilian coast. Hymenopenaeus chacei and H. laevis are recorded for the first time in southwestern Atlantic. The records of these species in the southwestern Atlantic are an important advancement to raise the knowledge of the deep-sea shrimps.

This study reports the occurrence of the oceanic basslet (Howellidae) in Brazilian waters. Bathysphyraenops simplex Parr, 1933, a rare species with a worldwide distribution, is recorded for the first time in Brazilian waters, based on three specimens collected off Rocas Atoll and Rio Grande do Norte. Howella atlantica Post & Quéro, 1991, known from the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean (64°N to 21°S), including waters around the Trindade Island, is reported off Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Rocas Atoll, and the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago. In addition, specimens previously reported in the literature as Howella brodie Ogilby, 1899 are reidentified as H. atlantica, extending the known distribution of this species to northeastern and southeastern Brazil. Measurements and counts for all specimens examined are provided.
