A new species of Bathynomus A. Milne-Edwards, 1879 (Malacostraca: Peracarida: Isopoda: Cirolanidae) from the upper Miocene of the Guadalquivir Basin (Spain)

Today representatives of the giant cirolanid isopods of the genus Bathynomus inhabit tropical to warm-temperate waters of the West Atlantic and the Indo-West Pacific. In not so distant geological past, however, the genus was present also in the Mediterranean, as documented by numerous fossils from the Plio–Pleistocene of Italy. Herein, a somewhat older occurrence of the genus is reported, from the North-East Atlantic. Based on a single posterior moult from the upper Miocene (Tortonian) of southwestern Spain, a new species is described. Bathynomus civisi sp. nov. differs from its congeners by both uropod rami having the obtuse distolateral corner produced as a distinct tip and a wider gap between the second and third side distal spines than between others. The new species is so far known only from the type locality in close vicinity of Arroyo Trujillo, in the municipality of Cantillana (Seville, Spain), where the marls of the Écija Formation are exposed. At the time of deposition of these marls, the area represented a part of the Norbetic Strait, a corridor connecting the North-East Atlantic with the Mediterranean. The new occurrence reported herein further supports the environmental preferences of the genus throughout its geological past for deep-marine settings.

A new species of amphipod, Megamphopus katagani sp. nov., is described from the sea of Marmara (Turkey). A key to the species of Megamphopus known from the North-East Atlantic, Mediterranean and associated seas is provided.

A new species of Ophlitaspongia (Porifera: Microcionidae) from wave-exposed sublittoral rock in the north-east Atlantic is described and compared to the two other species recorded from the genus in the north-east Atlantic. The species known as Ophlitaspongia seriata is considered to be a junior synonym of Halichondria panicea. Consequently, the name O. papilla has been reinstated. The other recorded species O. basifixa, is from deep water. Ophlitaspongia basifixa has characters which differentiate it from Ophlitaspongia sp. nov. The genus Ophlitaspongia has been separated from related genera and reinstated for species in the North Atlantic.

Based on the re-examination of the type and additional material of a fossorial shrimp Callianassa kerepesiensis Müller, 1976, from the middle Miocene (Badenian) of Hungary, the species is re-assigned to Calliax de Saint Laurent, 1973. Additionally, Callianassa reinhardpalorum sp. nov. is described based on the morphologically similar cheliped elements, classified at one time as C. cf. kerepesiensis. Both species, Callianassa reinhardpalorum sp. nov. and Calliax kerepesiensis comb. nov., have extant congeners inhabiting modern Mediterranean Sea and north-east Atlantic. The sedimentology of the localities with remains of the studied fossil taxa corresponds with the environmental preferences of their extant congeners, suggesting they inhabited marine settings with slightly changing salinity and the water depth not exceeding 20 m.

The tanaidacean fauna of the Iceland-Faroes-Shetlands sector of the North-east Atlantic was studied using material from the BIOFAR, BIOICE and AFEN surveys. Seven agathotanaid species were recorded from the genera Agathotanais, Paragathotanais and Paranarthrura, a total comparable to those from a similar bathymetric range in the Rockall-Biscay area and the Gulf of Mexico. A new species of Paragathotanais is described. All records of this family were from benthic stations with a mean bottom temperature of >= 2 degrees C, with none from the 'cold-water' region north of the Iceland-Shetlands ridge complex. An analysis of North-east Atlantic agathotanaid sex-ratios shows that these are not highly skewed in favour of females and are consistent with the status of the males as relatively non-dimorphic and long-lived entities.

Material collected during surveys of the Atlantic Frontier Margin (north-east Atlantic) in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002 includes ten species of the cumacean family Lampropidae belonging to three genera. A new species of the genus Hemilamprops, H. pterini, is described. Hemilamprops cristatus is partially re-illustrated from specimens sent to A.M. Norman by G.O. Sars. A key to the North Atlantic species of Hemilamprops is provided. A new species of the genus Mesolamprops, M. hartleyi, is described from the Atlantic Frontier Margin and the North Sea. The first record of Mesolamprops denticulatus from the Atlantic is reported. A key to the species of Mesolamprops is provided. Two species of the genus Platysympus were also found. A list of other lampropid species found in the Atlantic Frontier Margin is given.
