On the hydroid genus Sibogella Billard, 1911 (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa: Plumulariidae), with descriptions of two new species

The so far monotypic genus Sibogella Billard, 1911 is revised based on literature data. Its type species, S. erecta Billard, 1911, is thoroughly redescribed and illustrated, and accounts on two new congeners, S. flabellata sp. nov. from shallow waters of Indonesia and S. spissa sp. nov. from deep waters of New Caledonia, are provided. Single- (16S rRNA) and multi-locus (concatenated 16S, 18S, and 28S rRNA) phylogenetic assessments of the Plumulariidae, including newly-sequenced Sibogella material, supplement the alpha-taxonomical study.

Phylogenetic relationships within Hesionidae Grube, 1850 are assessed via maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood analyses of mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and 16S rRNA) and nuclear (18S rRNA, and 28S rRNA) data. The analyses are based on 42 hesionid species; six of these being new species that are described here. The new species, all from deep (>200 m depth) benthic environments (including whale falls) in the eastern Pacific, are Gyptis shannonae, sp. nov., Neogyptis julii, sp. nov., Sirsoe sirikos, sp. nov., Vrijenhoekia ketea, sp. nov., Vrijenhoekia falenothiras, sp. nov., and Vrijenhoekia ahabi, sp. nov. The molecular divergence among the new members of Vrijenhoekia is pronounced enough to consider them cryptic species, even though we cannot distinguish among them morphologically. Our results also showed that the subfamily Hesioninae Grube, 1850, as traditionally delineated, was paraphyletic. We thus restrict Hesioninae to include only Hesionini Grube, 1850 and refer the remaining members to Psamathinae Pleijel, 1998. The present study increases the number of hesionid species associated with whale falls from one to six and markedly increases the number of described deep-sea hesionid taxa. There appear to have been multiple colonisations of the deep sea from shallow waters by hesionids, though further sampling is warranted.

The genus Drylichus Heller, which has not been treated since the original description in 1916, is reviewed taxonomically. The type species, Drylichus hylesinoides Heller (New Caledonia), is redescribed. Two new species, D. fidelitas sp. nov. (Lifou Island) and D. monteithi sp. nov. (New Caledonia), are described. Drylichus is hypothesized to be closely related with Parnida Broun (New Zealand), with which it shares the following characters: (1) shape of mouthparts and gular region, (2) distribution and morphology of sensilla on mouthparts, (3) configuration of antennomeres, (4) correspondence of several types of antennal sensilla, (5) shape of ventral sclerites of thorax and abdomen.

The tribe Tyrini of New Caledonia is revised. The genus Anagonus Fauvel is redescribed based on the study of the type species, A. fracticornis Fauvel. Two new species of Anagonus are also described, A. spinipalpis sp. nov. and A. breviscapus sp. nov. Two new genera: Caledonogonus gen. nov., with two new species, C. loebli sp. nov. and C. pilosus sp. nov., and Paranagonus gen. nov. with one new species, P. excavatus sp. nov., are described. Keys to genera and species are provided.

The peculiar lebiine genus Disciferella gen. n. is described as a representative of the subtribe Dromiusina Bonelli, 1810. The genus is very distinct habitually and could be easily recognized among other lebiines already by its appearance. In combination of its distinctive features, it is most similar to the enigmatic monotypic genus Brachynopterus, but distinguished from it by several sufficient characters, including the shape of the gonocoxite which is very characteristic (elongate and slightly arcuate) in the latter genus and typical for Dromiusina (short and wide) in Disciferella gen. n. The new genus includes two newly described species: D. kabakovi sp. n. (type species) from Afghanistan and Pakistan, and D. psammophila sp. n. from south-eastern Iran. The very characteristic habitus of the two new species with their wide discoidal elytra is similar to that of some species of the genera Discoptera Semenov, 1889 and Graphipterus Latreille, 1802 living in sandy habitats. This resemblance suggests a similar specialized mode of life, most likely in sandy deserts and dunes. The systematic position of the new genus is discussed.

There are six valid species in the traditional genus Bathydoris, all of them found in polar or deep waters: Bathydoris abyssorum Bergh, 1884 (from the deep equatorial Pacific Ocean), Bathydoris ingolfiana Bergh, 1899 (from Greenland), Bathydoris hodgsoni Eliot, 1907 (from Antarctic and subantarctic waters), Bathydoris clavigera Thiele, 1912 (from the Argentinean deep-sea basin and Antarctica), Bathydoris aioca Ev. Marcus and Er. Marcus, 1962 (from deep waters off California), and a new species, Bathydoris spiralis (from deep waters off New Caledonia). Bathydoris patagonica Kaiser, 1980 and Bathydoris violacea Baranets, 1993 are regarded as synonyms of B. hodgsoni and B. clavigera, respectively. Bathydoris spiralis is clearly distinguishable from other members of the genus mainly in having a triaulic reproductive system and a very elongated, spirally coiled deferent duct. Examination of the holotype of B. violacea revealed that it is a synonym of B. clavigera. Bathydoris vitjazi Minichev, 1969 is most likely a synonym of B. hodgsoni, but is provisionally regarded as nomen dubium until more material becomes available. The phylogenetic hypothesis supports the monophyly of the Anthobranchia but shows that the genus Bathydoris is paraphyletic. Species of Bathydoris are divided into two clades, one of them also containing the phanerobranch and cryptobranch dorids. Bathydoris type species B. abyssorum retains its name and diagnosis, but B. clavigera and B. spiralis are excluded from this genus. They are, however, provisionally maintained in "Bathydoris" s.l., a likely paraphyletic group. This result shows some incongruities between the traditional nomenclatural system and phylogenetic systematics.

The southern African genera Nemopterella Banks, 1910 and Nemia Navás, 1915 (Neuroptera: Nemopteridae: Nemopterinae) are revised. Nemopterella is split into three genera: Nemopterella sensu stricto with type species Nemopteryx africana Leach, 1815 (= Nemopterella africana), Afroptera gen. nov., with type species Nemopterella munroi Tjeder, 1967, and the monotypic genus Siccanda gen. nov., with type species Nemopterella arenaria Tjeder, 1967. Eight new species are described in Afroptera gen. nov.: A. acuta Abdalla & Mansell sp. nov., A. alba Mansell & Abdalla sp. nov., A. brinkmani Abdalla & Mansell sp. nov., A. balli Abdalla & Mansell sp. nov., A. cylindrata Abdalla & Mansell sp. nov., A. folia Abdalla & Mansell sp. nov., A. koranna Mansell & Abdalla sp. nov., A. maraisi Abdalla & Mansell sp. nov., as well as two new species in the genus Nemopterella: N. kabas Mansell & Abdalla sp. nov., and N.cedrus Mansell & Abdalla sp. nov.

Two new iassine leafhopper genera, Nigrojassus gen. nov. and Neotrocnada gen. nov. (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) from Ecuador are described and illustrated. Nigrojassus gen. nov. is closely related to Hoplojassus Dietrich based on the elongate scutellum, arcuate base of the hindwing, leg chaetotaxy and flattened subgenital plate. Two new species, N. madhurai sp. nov. and N. ananthi sp. nov. are described in the genus. Neotrocnada is a monotypic genus with Neotrocnada napoensis sp. nov. as type species. Homologies of the highly modified structures of the male genitalia of Neotrocnada are assessed based on comparison to other New World genera.

The genus Eumorphobotys Munroe & Mutuura (1969) comprises two species that have been found in southern China. Two new species, E. concavuncus sp. n. and E. horakae sp. n., are described from southwest China. In appearance, this genus also resembles Calamochrous Lederer, 1863, Sclerocona Meyrick, 1890, Prodasycnemis Warren, 1892, and Loxoneptera Hampson, 1896. In order to evaluate the generic placement of the new taxa, the phylogeny of Eumorphobotys species and several species representing the potential related genera based on sequence data of COI, 16S rRNA, EF-1α and 28S rRNA gene regions were reconstructed and the taxonomy of these genera based on morphological characters was re-assessed. The results are as follows: (i) the monophyly of Eumorphobotys is well supported; (ii) Loxoneptera is paraphyletic. Two species of Calamochrous were recovered as terminal lineages within Loxoneptera; (iii) the clade comprising species of Loxoneptera and Calamochrous is in the sister position to Eumorphobotys with a robust support; (iv) species of Loxoneptera and Calamochrous resemble Eumorphobotys in the wing shape and the porrect labial palpus but differ in genitalia structures. The relationships of these genera are discussed; (v) two new species, E. concavuncus sp. n. and E. horakae sp. n., are described, Calamochrous obscuralis (Caradja, 1925) syn. n. is synonymized with E. eumorphalis (Caradja, 1925) based on the male genitalia and the adults and genitalia of all species (except the female of E. horakae sp. n.) are illustrated.

The four endemic new genera Paulaudalna gen. nov., Bispinalta gen. nov., Melanesiana gen. nov. and Strepuntalna gen. nov. are described from New Caledonia. The genus Paulaudalna includes two new species: Paulaudalna marginata sp. nov., as type species, and Paulaudalna amieuensis sp. nov. The genus Bispinalta is described from the new species Bispinalta caledonica sp. nov., and comes from bushy forest at summit of pic Ouitchambo at Boulouparis. The genus Melanesiana is described from the new species Melanesiana kataouii sp. nov., that is found in bushy forest at massif du Kepeto (Pouembout). The genus Strepuntalna is represented by the new species Strepuntalna. renaudetii sp. nov., and is encountered in bushy forest of south and central chain. Except Paulaudalna amieuensis, male calling songs of the new species are described from field recordings.

AbstractThe taxonomy of the Asian genera of the subfamily Betylobraconinae, a small and understudied group within the hymenopteran family Braconidae, is revised. A new genus exclusively from the Asian region, Asiabregma gen. nov., containing three species (A. ryukyuensis sp. nov. (type species, Japan and Malaya), A. makiharai sp. nov. (Japan) and A. sulaensis (van Achterberg), comb. nov. (Indonesia)) is described. One new species of Aulosaphobracon, A. striatus sp. nov. from Vietnam, and one of Facitorus, F. amamioshimus sp. nov. from Japan, are also described. Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses using COI mtDNA and 28S rRNA sequences, the three genera previously placed in the tribe Facitorini, Facitorus, Conobregma and Jannya, together with Asiabregma gen. nov., are transferred to the rogadine tribe Yeliconini.
