New basal taxa of South African Apioninae (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea: Brentidae)

Four new genera, six new species and one new subspecies of the brentid subfamily Apioninae are described from the Republic of South Africa (R.S.A.), all representing ancient fauna with Gondwanan roots. The new genera are: Rhynchitapion gen. n., with Rh. variiforme sp. n. (the type-species) and Rh. pallidum sp. n., Apodytapion gen. n., with A. stepniewskii sp. n., Turnerapion gen. n., with T. pondoense sp. n., and Lepanomidius gen. n., with L. ruthmuellerae sp. n. (the type-species) and L. magdaloides sp. n. The primitive genus Lepanomus Balfour-Browne is re-described and a new subspecies of its type species, Lepanomus crinalis zuluensis ssp. n., is described from north-eastern R.S.A. In addition, Rhynchitapion usambarense sp. n. is described from Tanzania. An identification key to all 12 basal genera of South African Apioninae is presented and their higher systematics is discussed. Three new tribes are proposed in South African Apioninae: Rhynchitapiini trib. n., Apodytapiini trib. n., and Lepanomini trib. n., in addition to the existing basal Antliarhinini Schoenherr, 1823, Tanaini Schoenherr, 1839, Mecolenini Wanat, 2001, Apiomorphini Legalov, 2018, Setapiini Legalov, 2018, and derived Apionini Schoenherr, 1823. A temporary resignation from supertribal division of the subfamily is recommended after discussion.

Two new species of the genus Paragus Latreille, 1804 are described from the Republic of South Africa: Paragus longipilus Tot, Vujić et Radenković sp. nov. and Paragus megacercus Tot, Vujić et Radenković sp. nov. These new species belong to the subgenus Pandasyopthalmus Stuckenberg, 1954a. Paragus longipilus sp. nov. is a member of the P. jozanus group, whereas Paragus megacercus sp. nov. belongs to the P. tibialis group. The taxonomic status of Paragus chalybeatus Hull, 1964 is revised and proposed as synonym of Paragus punctatus Hull, 1949. Additionally, an identification key to males of the South African species of Paragus is provided. Results of the present study confirm a significant level of endemism of Paragus in the Afrotropical Region (12 out of 29).

The genus Orbamia Herbulot, 1966 is revised. Two new genera are described: Rabomia Hausmann & Tujuba, gen. nov. (type species: Ectropis ? subaurata Warren, 1899), and Morabia Hausmann & Tujuba, gen. nov. (type species: Morabia politzari Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov.). Ten new species and two new subspecies are described: Rabomia obscurior Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from western Africa, Morabia politzari Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Kenya, Morabia brunnea Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Zambia, Orbamia marginata Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Tanzania, Orbamia clarissima Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Kenya, Orbamia clarior Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Kenya, Orbamia obliqua Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Zambia, Orbamia obliqua parva Hausmann & Tujuba, subsp. nov., from South Africa, Orbamia abiyi Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Zambia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Orbamia emanai Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov., from Ethiopia, Orbamia emanai lenzi Hausmann & Tujuba, subsp. nov., from Zambia and Malawi, and Orbamia balensis Hausmann & Tujuba, sp. nov. from Ethiopia. The taxon Lepiodes ocellata Warren, 1897 is raised from synonymy of O. octomaculata (Wallengren, 1872) to species rank (Zambia, Tanzania, Rwanda). The taxonomical analysis is based on both morphological and genetic cytochrome oxidase I (COI) data. Adults and male and female genitalia of all species are illustrated.

Four new monotypic leafhopper genera in Deltocephalinae and their type species are described: Ochromelanus brachyphallus gen.n. & sp.n. (Deltocephalini), Teinopterus microphallus gen.n. & sp.n. (Paralimnini), Tytthuspilus onychophallus gen.n. & sp.n. (Paralimnini) and Umeqi okhahlamba gen.n. & sp.n. (Paralimnini). These genera and species are associated with grass mainly in the Fynbos and Grassland Biomes of South Africa. The revision of Lecacis Theron (Paralimnini) concerns the redescription of the male type species of L. platypennis, the new description of the female, and two new species. Lecacis species appear to be distributed somewhat randomly in the Grassland and Savanna Biome of South Africa.

Two new genera and eight new species of bubocorophiid Siphonoecetini are described from north-eastern and northernAustralia: Belkginoecetes bullockyensis gen. et sp. nov. B. cooee sp. nov. (type species), B. darwiniense sp. nov., B. fleu-rae sp. nov., B. solea sp. nov., B. springthorpei sp. nov., Tropicoecetes carinata gen. et sp. nov., Rhinoecetes anneae sp.nov. The concept of bubocorophiid siphonoecetids and their distribution along eastern and northern Australia is briefly discussed. A key to species of Belkginoecetes gen. nov. is presented.

The Triglochin bulbosa complex (Juncaginaceae) from the Mediterranean region and Africa is revised. One new species, Triglochin buchenaui Köcke, Mering & Kadereit, and two new subspecies, Triglochin bulbosa subsp. calcicola Mering, Köcke & Kadereit and Triglochin bulbosa subsp. quarcicola Mering, Köcke & Kadereit, are described from South Africa. The only two Mediterranean taxa in the complex (Triglochin barrelieri, T. laxiflora) are elevated to species rank. Altogether seven species and four subspecies are recognised: Triglochin barrelieri, T. buchenaui, T. bulbosa subsp. bulbosa, T. bulbosa subsp. calcicola, T. bulbosa subsp. quarcicola, T. bulbosa subsp. tenuifolia, T. compacta, T. elongata, T. laxiflora and T. milnei. An identification key, detailed descriptions and accounts of the ecology and distribution of the taxa are provided. An IUCN conservation status is proposed for each taxon.

During floristical investigation in northen, eastern and north-eastern parts of the Republic of Macedonia four taxa of vascular plants were found which were not previously reported for the country – Andrachne telephioides L., Chorispora tenella (Pallas) DC., Nepeta parviflora M. Bieb. and Marrubium pestalozzae Boiss. The genus Andrach-ne and genus Chorispora are new genera for the territory of the Republic of Macedonia.

Two new genera are named: Pedistylis Wiens with the type species P. galpinii (Schinz ex Sprague) Wiens and Vanwykia Wiens with the type species V. remota (Bak. Sprague) Wiens. Three new species and one new subspecies are described:  Plicosepalus amplexicaulis Wiens,  Tapinanthus crassifolius Wiens,  Viscum oreophilum Wiens, and  V. capense L.f. subsp. hoolei Wiens. The following nomenclatural changes are made:  Actinanthella wyliei (Sprague) Wiens, Tapinanthus forbesii (Sprague) Wiens,  T. leendertziae (Sprague) Wiens,  T. kraussianus (Meisn.) Systematic position and composition of the endemic American tribe Paroecanthini are discussed. This tribe is divided into two subtribes: Paroecanthina stat. nov. (from Paroecanthini Gorochov, 1986) and Tafaliscina stat. nov. (from Tafaliscinae Desutter, 1988). Five new genera, 24 new species and 6 new subspecies are described. Systematic position and distribution of true and possible taxa of Paroecanthini are clarified, and some of these taxa are redescribed. Orocharis eclectos Otte, 2006, syn. nov. is synonymised with Paroecanthus mexicanus Saussure, 1859 which is restored as type species of Paroecanthus Saussure, 1859 according to original monotypy of this genus. Orocharis signatus Walker, 1869 and Carsidava Walker, 1869 are excluded from synonymy of P. mexicanus and Paroecanthus, respectively. Orocharis signatus is considered to be a probable synonym of P. aztecus aztecus Saussure, 1874. Carsidava and Chremon Rehn, 1930, syn. nov. are considered possible and evident synonyms of Ectotrypa Saussure, 1874, respectively. Angustitrella vicina (Chopard, 1912), sp. resurr. and A. picipes (Bruner, 1916), sp. resurr. are restored from synonymy of A. podagrosa (Saussure, 1897) and Siccotrella niger (Saussure, 1874), respectively. Lectotype of Amblyrhethus brevipes (Saussure, 1878) and type species of Metrypa Brunner-Wattenwyl, 1873 (Tafalisca lurida Walker, 1869) are designated. Pseudogryllus Chopard, 1912, gen. resurr. is restored from synonymy of Tafalisca Walker, 1869.

A synopsis of the Cis Latreille, 1796 from southern Africa is provided, with the description of 10 new species: Cis bicaesariatus sp. n., Cis foveocephalus sp. n., Cis grobbelaarae sp. n., Cis lacinipennis sp. n., Cis makrosoma sp. n., Cis mpumalangaensis sp. n., Cis parvisetosus sp. n., Cis tessariplacus sp. n., Cis umlalaziensis sp. n. and Cis westerncapensis sp. n. The introduced species Cis fuscipes Mellié, 1849 is recorded for the first time from the Republic of South Africa. New geographic records are provided for the following species: Cis neserorum Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade, 2017; Cis regius Orsetti & Lopes-Andrade, 2016 and Cis stalsi Souza-Gonçalves & Lopes-Andrade, 2017. Most southern African Cis are placed in available or newly proposed species-groups and a provisional identification key is provided.

The previously monotypic South African leafhopper genus, Elginus Theron, 1975, is revised. Its type species, E. saltus (Naudé, 1926), is redescribed, and the following 24 species are described as new: E. acutus, E. bispinus, E. cavatus, E. contradens, E. cultellus, E. denticulatus, E. dexteruncus, E. eccentricus, E. extrinsecus, E. falcatus, E. furcillatus, E. latus, E. levilobus, E. matarei, E. minutulus, E. recavus, E. malotiensis, E. oriens, E. semialatus, E. theroni, E. tortuosus, E. tubulus, E. unispinus and E. vulgaris. A key is provided for the identification mainly of males. These species are all grass-feeding and assigned to the tribe Paralimnini of the Deltocephalinae. Two new genera and species are described, namely Micropedeticus ochrus gen.n. & sp.n. in the tribe Paralimnini, from the Grassland Biome and Theronus priapus gen.n. & sp.n. in the tribe Deltocephalini, from the Fynbos Biome. Most species of Elginus and Micropedeticus are more common in the Grassland Biome in climax grassland under lower grazing pressure. Species of Elginus in the Fynbos Biome are more migratory and colonize new habitats such as grasses that appear after fire. These three genera are endemic to the Grassland and Fynbos Biomes of South Africa. A brief discussion on leafhoppers associated with grasses in the Fynbos, Grassland and Savanna Biomes of South Africa, is provided.
