Validation of the names of four species of laelapid mites (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae) parasitic on sigmodontine rodents (Rodentia: Cricetidae)

Savchenko & Lareschi (2019) and Lareschi (2020) described four new species of mites in the family Laelapidae. However, the papers were published in electronic form only and were not registered in ZooBank. They do not satisfy Article 8.5.3 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 2012), so the new names are not available from those papers. Therefore, the aim of the present note is to validate the names Laelaps schatzi, Androlaelaps azarae, Androlaelaps montensis and Androlaelaps cursor. Type specimens of the four new species are deposited in the Colección de Entomología, Museo de la Plata, Argentina.

Schmidt-Rhaesa & Vieler (2018) described a new species of benthic chaetognath, Spadella kappae, collected by meiofaunal sampling near Roscoff, France. Although the description and figures presented by Schmidt-Rhaesa & Vieler (2018) fully characterize the new species, the journal issue in which the description appeared was published online-only, with no print version, and the article in which the new name appeared did not include a ZooBank registration number for the article (LSID), required for validation of new species names in electronic-only publications (ICZN 2012). As a result, the name Spadella kappae Schmidt-Rhaesa & Vieler, 2018, as published in Cahiers de Biologie Marine 59: 257–265, is not available according the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, hereafter, the Code (ICZN 1999, 2012). Therefore, the present note serves to validate the name Spadella kappae by fulfilling Code conditions for nomenclatural availability. The date and authorship of the specific name, accordingly, are those of this note, not Schmidt-Rhaesa & Vieler (2018).

Recently, Suárez-Morales & Üstün (2018) described two new species of monstrilloid copepods, Cymbasoma turcorum and Monstrillopsis pontoeuxinensis from Turkish coastal waters of the Black Sea. The morphological descriptions, illustrations, and type designations presented in that paper fully characterized both new species; however, the journal issue in which the description appeared was published only online, with no print version (Suárez-Morales & Üstün 2018), and the article in which these new names were introduced did not include a ZooBank registration number (LSID) for the article or any other evidence of such registration. This is currently required by Article 8.5 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature for an electronic work to be deemed “published” under the Code (International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature 2012). Inasmuch as Suárez-Morales & Üstün (2018) is an “unpublished work”, the specific names turcorum and pontoeuxinensis proposed in it are unavailable. The present note is intended to fully validate these two names by proposing them once again as new while also fulfilling all of the Code’s current conditions for nomenclatural availability of this work itself and the two new names. The date and authorship of these two specific names will, accordingly, be those of this note, not Suárez-Morales & Üstün (2018).

Six new genera are erected in the subtribe Thioniina of the tribe Issini to accommodate seven American species of the family Issidae, six of which were described by L. Melichar and E. Schmidt in early 20th century from Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru, and one new species is described from Paraguay as follows: Carimeta gen. nov. (type species: Carimeta maculipennis sp. nov.); Metopasius gen. nov. (type species: Thionia proxima Melichar, 1906); Cophteroma gen. nov. (type species: Thionia truncatella Melichar, 1906); Cyclometa gen. nov. (type species: Thionia bifasciatifrons Melichar, 1906); Memusta gen. nov. (type species: Thionia obtusa Melichar, 1906); Thiopara gen. nov. (type species: Thionia fusca Melichar, 1906). Thionia sinuata Schmidt, 1910 is transferred to the genus Carimeta gen. nov. Six new combinations are formed: Carimeta sinuata (Schmidt, 1910), comb. nov.; Metopasius proximus (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Cophteroma truncatella (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Cyclometa bifasciatifrons (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Memusta obtusa (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov.; Thiopara fusca (Melichar, 1906), comb. nov. The lectotypes are designated for Thionia fusca Melichar, T. proxima Melichar, and T. sinuata Schmidt to stabilize the nomenclature in the studied group according to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. New record for Cyclometa bifasciatifrons from Brasil is provided. Photographs of the type specimens with original labels including Melichar’s and Schmidt’s autographs as well as drawings of all studied species are given.

A recent series of papers, and rebuttals, regarding Photography-based taxonomy (PBT) (Pape et al. 2016, Krell et al. 2016, Ceríaco et al. 2016, Thorpe 2017) has raised much controversy and discussion about the practice of describing new species without preserved type specimens. Although there has been thoughtful discussion upon this issue, there is still much misunderstanding, especially regarding the idea of changing parts of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999) to regulate this practice.

Dubois & Nemésio (2007) recently considered that the present International Code for Zoological Nomenclature (“Code”) could reasonably be interpreted as requiring the deposition of dead vouchers for new species and subspecies descriptions. They considered that, to the extent that there is lack of clarity, the Code should be amended so as to require the deposition of a dead voucher. They doubted the utility of photographs and other materials for descriptions and suggested that ethical or moral concerns about the taking of dead type specimens were poorly supported. Dubois & Nemésio (2007)’s preferred interpretations of the current Code are not supported by members of the Commission. Possible reasons why the collection of a dead type specimen might not be necessary or recommended include the setting of a good example to communities in whose hands conservation action lies, government permit issues and the description of new taxa on the brink of extinction where collecting may impact populations. The Code should be liberal in relation to the nature of type specimens to enable taxonomists, who are the persons best placed to take decisions, to make appropriate judgments for particular descriptions.

Although the description and figures presented by Ortiz et al. (2018) fully characterize the new species, the journal issue in which the description appeared was published online only, and the article in which the new name appeared did not include a ZooBank registration number (LSID), required for validation of new names in electronic-only publications (ICZN 2012). As a result, the name Shoemakerella fissipro Ortiz, Capetillo & Winfield, 2018, as published in Cahiers de Biologie Marine 59: 599–605, is not available according the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999, 2012). Therefore, the present note serves to validate name Shoemakerella fissipro by fulfilling ICZN conditions for nomenclatural availability.

Two species of Penaeidae shrimp from western Atlantic were described by Carvalho-Batista et al. (2019) as Xiphopenaeus dincao and Xiphopenaeus baueri. The descriptions and figures presented by Carvalho-Batista et al. (2019) and the posterior author’s correction (Carvalho-Batista et al., 2020) characterize the species. However, the journal issue in which the description was published is online only, and the article with the new names did not include a Zoobank registration number (LSID), required for validation of new names in electronic-only publications (ICZN 2012). Thus, the names Xiphopenaeus dincao and Xiphopenaeus baueri, as published in Scientific Reports 9: 15281, is not available according the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999, 2012). Therefore, the present note serves to validate the names Xiphopenaeus dincao and Xiphopenaeus baueri by fulfilling ICZN conditions for nomenclatural availability. Type specimens of both species are deposited in Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZUSP), São Paulo, Brazil.

The poeciliid species, Poecilia kempkesi Poeser, 2013, was the fourth species of the subgenus Acanthophacelus Eigenmann, 1907 to be described, based on individuals from a single urban anthropized locality close to Paramaribo, Suriname (Poeser, 2013). The description itself lacked any section clearly distinguishing the new species from the remaining species of Poecilia Bloch & Schneider 1801, and in particular from the species of the subgenus Acanthophacelus, type species Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859. According to Article 13 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN, 1999) the criteria of availability for a species-group name are:

The modern classification of skinks is based on a nomenclature that dates to the 1970s. However, there are a number of earlier names in the family group that have been overlooked by recent workers. These names are identified and their validity with respect to the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature investigated, along with their type genera. In most cases, use of these names to supplant junior synonyms in modern day use is avoidable by use of the Reversal of Precedence articles of the Code, but the names remain available in case of future divisions at the tribe and subtribe level. Other names are unavailable due to homonymy, either of their type genera or the stems from similar but non-homonymous type genera. However, the name Egerniini is replaced by Tiliquini, due to a limited timespan of use of Egerniini. A new classification of the Family Scincidae is proposed, providing a more extensive use of Code-regulated levels of classification, including tribes and subtribes, and a detailed synonymy provided for each taxonomic unit.
