<p>This thesis begins with a consideration of what constitutes migrant writing, and points to the difficulties in arriving at an absolute definition. Some justification is given for the fact that the ensuing discussion concerns short stories alone, and some of the particular qualities of the short story which make it an appropriate form for migrant literature are examined. The first chapter also makes a brief survey of the context for migrant writing within New Zealand literature, and compares the work of several short story writers, migrant and non-migrant. The work of two New Zealand migrant short story writers is discussed closely in the chapters that follow: Amelia Batistich's stories are examined in Chapter Two, and Yvonne du Fresne's in Chapter Three. In each discussion, formal qualities are given equal attention as matters of content and theme. The final chapter attempts to draw connections between the work of these two writers and the problems of definition raised in the first chapter. Consideration is also given to the attitudes and expectations of readers of migrant fiction. The appendices to the thesis contain biographies of Amelia Batistich and Yvonne du Fresne, and transcripts of conversations with them. The conversations were recorded in 1984, and have been lightly edited. A bibliography is included which provides a selective guide to the two authors published and unpublished work, and a full account of all secondary material consulted.</p>

AbstractThe seven barriers to be overcome on the way to successful implementation of servitization are as follows: customers; organizational structure and culture; knowledge and information; products and activities; competitors, suppliers, and partners; economic and finance; and society and environment. We will look at each of the barriers in more detail, based on the ranking described in Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-80511-1_1. This chapter draws from the published and unpublished work of the authors using the survey data and the interview insights. This chapter will use cases to describe how others overcame the barriers (Fig. 2.1).

We show that, with the exception of the words $a^2ba^2$ and $b^2ab^2$, all (finite or infinite) binary patterns in the Prouhet-Thue-Morse sequence can actually be found in that sequence as segments (up to exchange of letters in the infinite case). This result was previously attributed to unpublished work by D. Guaiana and may also be derived from publications of A. Shur only available in Russian. We also identify the (finitely many) finite binary patterns that appear non trivially, in the sense that they are obtained by applying an endomorphism that does not map the set of all segments of the sequence into itself.

The ways of representing the Balkan Peninsula that existed in Russia in the first half of the 19th century are analyzed in the article. The sources for the study were encyclopedic dictionaries of the first half of the 19th century. (A.A. Plyushar, L.I. Zeddeler, A.V. Starchevsky), as well as an unpublished work by I.P. Liprandi “The Experience of the Word Interpreter of the Ottoman Empire”. The author argues that for a long time the Balkan Peninsula was not perceived as a single region with a set of historically deter-mined features. Arguments are presented confirming that certain areas of the peninsula were elements of different discourses. The relationship between the choice of a particular register of descriptions by the authors of the dictionaries and the political affiliation of the described regions of the Balkan Peninsula is shown. A special attitude of the authors of encyclopedias to Serbia and Greece, the newly formed states on the territory of the Balkan Peninsula, has been established. In (2018) Gilbert Plumer argues against the existence of inference-claims on the grounds that they lead to the kind of vicious infinite regress illustrated in Carroll’s famous Achilles and the Tortoise paper (Carroll 1895). In Plumer’s view, it is not simply that neither arguments nor arguers do make inference-claims, but that they can’t do so, on pain of this regress. In further unpublished work Plumer has generalized from this result: it is a mistake to include reference to standards of argument assessment within the content of the argument. Inference-claims (i.e., sufficiency-claims) do not exist, and neither do relevance-claims or acceptability-claims, and all for much the same reason. I will argue that his arguments fail to show that inference-claims do not exist, because the regresses they lead to either are not vicious, not infinite, or can be avoided. Then I hope to show, on the grounds of what I call the ‘completeness’ of the argument, that inference-claims not only do exist but that they must exist. This is not to say that inference-claims are necessarily asserted in an act of arguing, but asserting them would not lead to the kind of harmful consequences Plumer supposes, any more than their mere existence would.

Instead of interpreting Berkeley exclusively in terms of how he relates to Descartes, Malebranche, and Locke, this chapter suggests we consider him in relation to other figures as well (e.g. Stoics, Ramists, Suárez, Spinoza, Leibniz). This allows us to integrate his published and unpublished work, and it reveals how the breadth of his writings are much more aligned with one another. Specifically, it indicates how mind is the will that things be identified by being differentiated and related rather than something distinct from already differentiated things.

The Czesław Horain collection in the Archive of the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London as a source of studies on the history of Poles in the Holy Land Czesław Horain (1904–1966), an engineer and amateur historian, resided in Palestine from 1940 until his death, arriving there as a war refugee. He collected materials about Poles in the Holy Land for many years. He was the author of the pioneering unpublished work entitled Bio-bibliografia polsko-palestyńska generalna (A.D. 990–1950), which he wrote in Jerusalem. The biobibliography contains lists of printed works and manuscripts, as well as documentation concerning any Poles who ever visited the Holy Land. The Horain collection, in the form of index cards and the collector’s notes and comments, included over 15,000 items. In 1993, part of the collection, previously kept in Jerusalem, was brought to the Archive of the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London. It is kept in the fonds with the reference number Kol. 551. The article aims to provide a closer look at this fonds, to answer what its subject matter is and what type of materials it contains, as well as where and when the group of documents was created and according to what criteria it was assembled. So far, the collection has not been studied or cited by historians. It should be introduced into scientific circulation because it considerably improves the current state of knowledge about the history of Poles in Palestine. Streszczenie: Czesław Horain (1904–1966), z wykształcenia inżynier, z zamiłowania historyk, przebywał w Palestynie od 1940 r. aż do śmierci. Trafił tam jako uchodźca wojenny. Przez wiele lat zbierał materiały dotyczące Polaków w Ziemi Świętej. W czasie pobytu w Jerozolimie opracował pionierską, ale nieogłoszoną drukiem „Bio-bibliografię polsko-palestyńską generalną (A.D. 990–1950)”. Zawierała ona wykazy prac drukowanych i rękopiśmiennych, a także dokumentację dotyczącą Polaków, którzy kiedykolwiek przewinęli się przez Ziemię Świętą. Biobibliografia, w formie fiszek i materiałów warsztatowych, obejmowała ponad 15 tys. pozycji. W 1993 r. część zbiorów, przechowywana dotąd w Jerozolimie, trafiła do Archiwum Instytutu Polskiego i Muzeum im. gen. Sikorskiego w Londynie. Stanowi zespół oznaczony sygnaturą Kol. 551. Artykuł jest próbą przybliżenia tego zespołu. Stara się odpowiedzieć, co jest przedmiotem zbioru i jakiego rodzaju materiały zawiera, gdzie i kiedy ten zbiór powstał, jakie były kryteria jego gromadzenia. Jak dotąd kolekcja nie została rozpoznana przez badaczy. Powinna wejść w obieg naukowy, ponieważ w znaczącym stopniu uzupełnia stan wiedzy o dziejach Polaków w Palestynie.

The article examines the attitude of philosopher, poet, and aesthetician Aleksandr Gorsky to the personality and legacy of A.M. Gorky. It outlines the main directions of Gorky’s perception and interpretation by Gorsky. The article argues that Gorsky highlights vitality and projectivity of Gorky’s creative thinking, and considers him a consistent immortalist. The focus is on Gorsky’s unpublished work “Overcoming Faust” (1939–1940), a typical example of philosophical criticism that uses philological methods of analysis. Gorsky examines Faustianism through the prism of the rejection of individualism, which is specific for Gorky’s work. Considering the desire for knowledge and action as the defining feature of the Faustian consciousness, Gorsky notes that this desire is constrained and limited by the fact of human mortality and the recognition of the omnipotence of nature. The fact that Faustianism does not aim at overcoming death and eventually comes to terms with with it, allows Gorsky to see Faustianism as a bourgeois type of consciousness. Instead, Gorky, by standing against petty-bourgeois passivity in his work, raises the question about the means to overcome death. Gorky’s early fairy tale “The Girl and Death” is interpreted by Gorsky in the context of the development of life-affirming consciousness that overcomes death by the power of love and devotion to the common cause.

Daniele Barbaro’s treatise on perspective is one of the most authoritative technical-scientific sources of the sixteenth century. Although largely based on the unpublished work of Piero della Francesca, the treatise had the precise and original purpose of filling a gap in the Vitruvian text about the contents of the so-called ‘scaenographia’, a discipline based on optical geometry of which Vitruvius provided only meagre and sibylline words. The subdivision of the treatise, examined here into the individual parts that constitute it, follows a clearly Vitruvian structure, with the first three parts dedicated to ichnographia (perspective drawing of plans), orthographaia (perspective drawing of solid bodies) and scaenographia (perspective drawing of the buildings and their ornaments), and with two other parts specifically dedicated to the measurements of the human body and to the drawing of the planisphere, themes treated by Vitruvius respectively in the third and ninth books of De architectura. In this sense, La pratica della perspettiva, published in 1568, should be considered as an integral text of the most authoritative commentary on Vitruvius’ I Dieci libri dell’architettura, published in 1556 and 1567.
