Fusarium species produce toxic mycotoxins that are known to exert adverse health effects in humans and animals. No attempts have been made to establish mycotoxin-producing capabilities of isolates of Fusarium species from bananas exhibiting symptoms of crown rot. Crown rot is one of the most serious post harvest problems in banana and the disease is caused by different fungal species, principally Fusarium species. Banana, which is of great economic significance in growing countries (i.e. Costa Rica, Cameroon, Ecuador) is seriously affected by crown rot and is a major cause of fruit loss

Ecological sanitation (EcoSan) systems capture and sanitize human excreta and generate organic nutrient resources that can support more sustainable nutrient management in agricultural ecosystems. An emerging EcoSan system that is implemented in Haiti and several other contexts globally couples container-based household toilets with aerobic, thermophilic composting. This closed loop sanitation system generates organic nutrient resources that can be used as part of an ecological approach to soil nutrient management and thus has the potential to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals 2 (zero hunger), 6 (clean water and sanitation for all), and 13 (climate change solutions). However, the role of organic nutrient resources derived from human excreta in food production is poorly studied. We conducted a greenhouse experiment comparing the impact of feces-derived compost on crop production, soil nutrient cycling, and nutrient losses with two amendments produced from wastewater treatment (pelletized biosolids and biofertilizer), urea, and an unfertilized control. Excreta-derived amendments increased crop yields 2.5 times more than urea, but had differing carry-over effects. After a one-time application of compost, crop production remained elevated throughout all six crop cycles. In contrast, the carry-over of crop response lasted two and four crop cycles for biosolids and biofertilizer, respectively, and was absent for urea. Soil carbon concentration in the compost amended soils increased linearly through time from 2.0 to 2.5%, an effect not seen with other treatments. Soil nitrous oxide emissions factors ranged from 0.3% (compost) to 4.6% (biosolids), while nitrogen leaching losses were lowest for biosolids and highest for urea. These results indicate that excreta-derived compost provides plant available nutrients, while improving soil health through the addition of soil organic carbon. It also improved biogeochemical functions, indicating the potential of excreta-derived compost to close nutrient loops if implemented at larger scales. If captured and safely treated through EcoSan, human feces produced in Haiti can meet up to 13, 22, and 11% of major crop needs of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, respectively.

Além disso, o intuito deste trabalho foi comparar o ângulo de repouso das sementes em diferentes protótipos. O estudo foi realizado no laboratório da Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia, Tomé-Açu (PA), para verificar: teor de água, biometria, esfericidade, volume unitário, porosidade e ângulo de repouso. O teor de água utilizou cinco amostras (50 sementes), biometria obteve eixos ortogonais de 100 sementes, e utilizadas 20 sementes para esfericidade e volume unitário. Ainda, obtidas médias em 3 equipamentos de ângulo de repouso, (5 repetições). Como resultado, o teor de água (b.u.) foi baixo, (0 a 10%); a esfericidade variou de 61,45 a 90,66%; volume unitário foi de 0,03 a 0,13 cm3 e as porosidades foram (0,69, 0,77 e 0,78). Os ângulos de repouso nos equipamentos (A- adaptado em relação a B; B- equipamento estabelecido e C- protótipo alternativo) foram, respectivamente: 38,85; 31,92 e 32,14°, não diferindo estatisticamente. Ademais, o estudo buscou trazer informações sobre a espécie e colaborar com trabalhos de construção, operação e adaptação de equipamentos de secagem e armazenamento.   Palavras-chave: esfericidade, porosidade, volume unitário.   PHYSICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF ANNATTO (Bixa orellana L.) SEEDS, AIMED POST-HARVEST PROCESSES   ABSTRACT: Annatto demonstrates economic importance in the commercialization of ground grains for color and dye production; however, there are few studies on their physical characteristics in post-harvest processes. In addition, the aim of this work was to compare the rest angle of seeds in different prototypes. The study was carried out in the laboratory of Federal Rural University of the Amazon, Tomé-Açu (PA), to verify: water content, biometrics, sphericity, unit volume, porosity and angle of repose. The water content used five samples (50 seeds), biometrics obtained orthogonal axes of 100 seeds, and 20 seeds were used for sphericity and unit volume. Still, averages were obtained in 3 equipment of angle of rest (5 repetitions). As result, the water content (b.u.) was low (0 to 10%); sphericity ranged from 61.45 to 90.66%; unit volume was 0.03 to 0.13 cm3 and porosities were 0.69, 0.77 and 0.78. The rest angles in the equipment (A- adapted in relation to B; B- established equipment and C- alternative prototype) were, respectively: 38.85; 31.92 and 32.14°, not differing statistically. In addition, the study sought to bring information about the species and collaborate with construction, operation and adaptation of drying and storage equipment.   Keywords: sphericity, porosity, unit volume.

The ovine population of the central Argentine territory is the result of constant introductions of different animal biotypes, which determined the existence of ovine populations with great variability. The main objective of the breeders is to produce a lamb for self-consumption and sale of surpluses, without considering the wool product. The production of a lamb for the market is compatible with the production of wool for the textile industry, having to evaluate the feasibility for the commercialization of lamb wool that they produce. This work aimed to provide information and tools to evaluate the quality of lamb’s wool and the evolution of the weight of lambs belonging to the native flocks of the area. Characterization of the productive systems was carried out, seeking to highlight the attributes of meat and wool of native lambs. The characteristics of wool and meat lamb product were evaluated under two treatments, either in free rage conditions or lambs supplemented under confinement. The analysis of the behaviour of the productive systems did not show significant differences between lamb biotypes, which allows affirming that the variation within an animal biotype is even more important than the expected one between biotypes. This indicates that both treatments can be used according to the particular situation of each productive unit. Therefore, it is possible to produce wool and meat of outstanding quality looking for the goodness of the wool produced and optimizing through proper handling practices the meat product.

Vegetation restorations of degraded meadows have been widely implemented. The evaluation of soil nutrient changes as affected by degradation is vital for efficient restorations. However, while macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) have been widely investigated, sulfur (S) as one important element correlated tightly with other nutrients has not been thoroughly studied. Two studies were conducted to determine changes of sulfur as affected by degradation and elevation gradients. The results showed that available S (AS) changed non-linearly with elevation and the first principal component based on other soil nutrient variables. Soil AS depended on degradation levels and contributed substantially to the separation of meadows with different degradation levels. Moreover, AS responded stronger to changes in elevation gradients and degradation levels compared with other major nutrients. Thereby, AS could be an important nutrient responding to meadow disturbance, which should be considered in future studies on meadow soil nutrients cycling and vegetation restorations. The findings have implications for ecological restoration of degraded meadows with respect to soil nutrient management and conservations.
