National handcrafts are well-known at home and Abroad for their fine ingredients, exquisite blending of colors, and excellent skilled shaping and painting. What is more, they have great value and are deeply popular with people around the world. National handcrafts, as a cultural crystallization, must be protected. In order to better realize the protection, we try to apply the technology of reverse engineering to the protection. This article mainly takes a handcraft, Yan Zi YU (meaning “swallow fish”), as an example to expound and demonstrate the process of reverse engineering technology. During this process, by using scanning technology of reverse engineering, the collection and splicing of the point cloud data, the theoretical analysis of the NURBS surface in the reconstruction phase, and other practical operations in other stages, reverse engineering can be used to regenerate 3D modal data of the swallow fish and to inspect and analyse the errors in it through Geomagic Quality to ensure that the new model meets the precision requirements. Therefore, the reverse engineering technology can be completely applied to the protection of national handcrafts so that they can fully demonstrate their own value and function. If the precision of reverse engineering detection can reach nanometric level, a breakthrough will promote the protection of cultural relics.

The improved design of the form of product is related to the free-form surface treatment, but the use of the product which forms the point cloud data to obtain a satisfactory surface reconstruction is difficult. NURBS surface fitting technique, the appearance of the product first be classified according to form, and then accordingly the product shape reconstruction, it is much easier. Facts have proved that the conditions does not require high precision, the use of NURBS fitting to reconstruct the free surface able to obtain a satisfactory product form. This improved design of the product form is practical.

Reverse engineering technology has been widely used in engineering design field. This paper proposed a CATIA-modeling-based reverse engineering technology for vehicle rear axle design. The general process for reverse engineering includes the pretreatment of the point cloud data, the establishment of the grid, the surface reconstruction of parts, the analysis of curved surface, and so on. Finally, the paper puted forward practical and feasible solution to the problem.

The concept, processes and research status of reverse engineering are introduced. The application of reverse engineering technology on food packaging is illustrated by introducing the process of rebuilding a model for a biscuit box, including acquiring point cloud data of the biscuit box, processing data and materializing model. The results show that a high quality model of sample can be rebuild by reverser engineering. It is a effective method in innovation design on food packaging by reverser engineering technology.

The mold’s broken area is irregular, so it is difficult to model by traditional method. It puts forwards to remodel the mold’s broken area by Reverse Engineering technology. Non-contact measurement and contact measurement are both used to measure the broken mold. The pretreatment tasks are done including the point cloud data reduction Chord where the deviation sampling method is used. The surface model of the mold is remodeled and solidified. The broken area is extracted and solidified, and it provides the important data for the following repairing work.

A reverse engineering based point cloud data acquisition method is addressed. The most critical part of reverse engineering (RE) is data acquisition of the digital model, the quality of design is determined by point cloud data acquisition, which is related to the accuracy of design. The measurement of relative position of different parts has been a difficulty of data acquisition. In this paper, the ATOS optical scanner was used as an example to illustrate the principle of three-dimensional scanner, the positioning methods and procedure of point cloud processing. A case study of point cloud data acquisition of car body was used to illustrate three-point positioning principle, which improves the accuracy of measurement compare with traditional method.

This article briefly introduces the concept, processes and key technologies of reverse engineering. It demonstrate the feasibility and significance of application of reverse engineering technology on beverage packaging by rebuilding the model for a beverage bottle with complex geometries: firstly, acquiring point cloud data of the beverage bottle by 3D laser scanning system; then processing point cloud data and materializing model by using reverse engineering software; finally, rebuilding CAD model. The application could provide a new method of designing beverage packaging.

In Reverse Engineering (RE), Point Cloud Data (PCD) processing is of great importance. But at present, a number of key issues about its algorithms are unresolved. This article mainly introduces the author who has done the research and put forward some specific algorithms on the aspects of data topology reconstruction, multi-view data registration and data reduction, and then developed a PCD processing system --3DPointshop, based on OpenGL and MFC. Through a series of instances of tests show that the prototype system which contains the algorithms and function modules will be able to implement on PCD processing well and could achieve the practical application level.

This paper takes automobile panel as the study object, and adopts non-contact 3-D scanner to obtain the point cloud data of the automobile panel for point cloud data sampling and noise reduction processing. It obtains NURBS surface fitting through detecting of curvature and grid. Reverse design can improve the product prototype in a fast speed and provide an important way of automobile panel development.
