Intermittent Frontogenesis in the Alboran Sea

AbstractWe present a phenomenological description and dynamical analysis of the Alboran fronts using a realistic simulation at submesoscale resolution. The study is focused on east Alboran fronts emerging within relatively strong flows that separate from the Spanish coast into the basin interior. Despite modest lateral shifting associated with the position of the Alboran anticyclonic gyres and variations in intensity, these fronts present a similar structure and dynamical configuration as the climatological Almeria–Oran front. The statistical analysis of our solution shows that strained-induced frontogenesis is a recurrent submesoscale mechanism associated with these fronts, and the process is assessed in terms of the advective Lagrangian frontogenetic tendencies associated with buoyancy and velocity horizontal gradients. Intermittency in their strength and patterns is indicative of high variability in the occurrence of active frontogenesis in association with the secondary (overturning) circulation across the frontal gradient. As a result, we find many episodes with strong surface fronts that do not have much associated downwelling. Frontogenesis and the associated secondary circulation are further explored during two particular frontal events, both showing strong downwelling of (1) cm s−1 extending down into the pycnocline. A frontogenetic contribution of turbulent vertical momentum mixing to the secondary circulation is identified in the easternmost region during the cold season, when the dynamics are strongly influenced by the intrusion of the salty Northern Current. The background vertical velocity fields observed during the analyzed events indicate other currents in the submesoscale range, including tidal and topographic internal waves.

ABSTRACT Environmental screening of bacteria for the presence of genes of interest is a challenging problem, due to the high variability of the nucleotide sequence of a given gene between species. Here, we tackle this general issue using a particularly well-suited model system that consists of the nodulation gene nodC, which is shared by phylogenetically distant rhizobia. 41mer and 50mer oligonucleotides featuring the nucleotide diversity of two highly conserved regions of the NodC protein were spotted on glass slides and cross hybridized with the radioactive-labeled target genomic DNA under low-stringency conditions. Statistical analysis of the hybridization patterns allowed the detection of known, as well as new, nodC sequences and classified the rhizobial strains accordingly. The microarray was successfully used to type the nodC gene directly from legume nodules, thus eliminating the need of cultivation of the endosymbiont. This approach could be extended to a panel of diagnostic genes and constitute a powerful tool for studying the distribution of genes of interest in the environment, as well as for bacteria identification.

Abstract A new method was developed for statistical analysis of ensembles of instantaneous velocity fields measured by PIV in liquid (continuous phase) to determine the distribution of the vapor phase in cavitating flow. The method is based on two main principles: the absence of tracers used for PIV measurements in vapor, and the statistical independence of individual measurements. This allowed establishing an exponential dependence of repeatability of the vapor phase at a certain point of a cavitating flow. Compliance with this theoretical law was verified using the Pearson chi-square test. All theoretical distributions were divided into several groups depending on the time-averaged local vapor content calculated over the entire ensemble of realizations and the probability of a single event. As a result, dimensions of the stationary part of an attached cavity and the place of detachments of cloud cavities from the hydrofoil surface were determined using the new method of statistical analysis for an unsteady cloud cavitation regime.

We present the evaluation of two well-known, low-cost consumer-grade EEG devices: the Emotiv EPOC and the Neurosky MindWave. Problems with using the consumer-grade EEG devices (BCI illiteracy, poor technical characteristics, and adverse EEG artefacts) are discussed. The experimental evaluation of the devices, performed with 10 subjects asked to perform concentration/relaxation and blinking recognition tasks, is given. The results of statistical analysis show that both devices exhibit high variability and non-normality of attention and meditation data, which makes each of them difficult to use as an input to control tasks. BCI illiteracy may be a significant problem, as well as setting up of the proper environment of the experiment. The results of blinking recognition show that using the Neurosky device means recognition accuracy is less than 50%, while the Emotiv device has achieved a recognition accuracy of more than 75%; for tasks that require concentration and relaxation of subjects, the Emotiv EPOC device has performed better (as measured by the recognition accuracy) by ∼9%. Therefore, the Emotiv EPOC device may be more suitable for control tasks using the attention/meditation level or eye blinking than the Neurosky MindWave device.

Abstract Accommodation tourist industry is characterized by high variability. For this category of services not only the location is crucial- that does not change, but also the standard, prices and seasonality of services. In the recent years, leisure centers performing functions only during the summer time have seen the possibility to extend their activities beyond the summer months. The reasons for this are the local investments requiring qualified staff which comes from different parts of the country, Europe and the world while creating demand for accommodations. To meet the possible demand needs and to adapt to cold season, performing thermo-modernization works is necessary. In order to find the best solution and answer those needs, analysis of the profitability of the investments in a chosen holiday resort was carried out. The article presents the results of the analysis based on the payback period, LCC analysis and assessment of the investments risk.
