Inter-comparison of wind measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer and the lower troposphere with Aeolus and a ground-based coherent Doppler lidar network over China

After the successful launch of Aeolus, which is the first spaceborne wind lidar developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), on 22 August 2018, we deployed several ground-based coherent Doppler wind lidars (CDLs) to verify the wind observations from Aeolus. By the simultaneous wind measurements with CDLs at 17 stations over China, the Rayleigh-clear and Mie-cloudy horizontal-line-of-sight (HLOS) wind velocities from Aeolus in the atmospheric boundary layer and the lower troposphere are compared with those from CDLs. To ensure the quality of the measurement data from CDLs and Aeolus, strict quality controls are applied in this study. Overall, 52 simultaneous Mie-cloudy comparison pairs and 387 Rayleigh-clear comparison pairs from this campaign are acquired. All of the Aeolus-produced Level 2B (L2B) Mie-cloudy HLOS wind and Rayleigh-clear HLOS wind and CDL-produced HLOS wind are compared individually. For the inter-comparison result of Mie-cloudy HLOS wind and CDL-produced HLOS wind, the correlation coefficient, the standard deviation, the scaled mean absolute deviation (MAD) and the bias are 0.83, 3.15 m s−1, 2.64 m s−1 and −0.25 m s−1, respectively, while the y=ax slope, the y=ax+b slope and the y=ax+b intercept are 0.93, 0.92 and −0.33 m s−1. For the Rayleigh-clear HLOS wind, the correlation coefficient, the standard deviation, the scaled MAD and the bias are 0.62, 7.07 m s−1, 5.77 m s−1 and −1.15 m s−1, respectively, while the y=ax slope, the y=ax+b slope and the y=ax+b intercept are 1.00, 0.96 and −1.2 m s−1. It is found that the standard deviation, the scaled MAD and the bias on ascending tracks are lower than those on descending tracks. Moreover, to evaluate the accuracy of Aeolus HLOS wind measurements under different product baselines, the Aeolus L2B Mie-cloudy HLOS wind data and L2B Rayleigh-clear HLOS wind data under Baselines 07 and 08, Baselines 09 and 10, and Baseline 11 are compared against the CDL-retrieved HLOS wind data separately. From the comparison results, marked misfits between the wind data from Aeolus Baselines 07 and 08 and wind data from CDLs in the atmospheric boundary layer and the lower troposphere are found. With the continuous calibration and validation and product processor updates, the performances of Aeolus wind measurements under Baselines 09 and 10 and Baseline 11 are improved significantly. Considering the influence of turbulence and convection in the atmospheric boundary layers and the lower troposphere, higher values for the vertical velocity are common in this region. Hence, as a special note, the vertical velocity could impact the HLOS wind velocity retrieval from Aeolus.

Intensity fluctuations in Hurricane Irma (2017) during a period of rapid intensification

Intensity fluctuations observed during a period of rapid intensification of Hurricane Irma (2017) between 04 September and 06 September were investigated in a detailed modelling study using an ensemble of Met Office Unified Model (MetUM) convection permitting forecasts. These intensity fluctuations consisted of alternating weakening and strengthening phases. During weakening phases the tropical cyclone temporarily paused its intensification. It was found that weakening phases were associated with a change in the potential vorticity structure, with a tendency for it to become more monopolar. Convection during strengthening phases was associated with isolated local regions of high relative vorticity and vertical velocity in the eyewall, while during weakening phases the storm became more azimuthally symmetric with weaker convection spread more evenly. The boundary layer was found to play an important role in the cause of the intensity fluctuations with an increase in the agradient wind within the boundary layer causing a spin--down just above the boundary layer during the weakening phases whereas during the strengthening phases the agradient wind reduces. This study offers new explanations for why these fluctuations occur and what causes them.

Estimation of divergent wind from OLR data for use in objective analysis over the Indian region

A scheme is formulated for the use of OLR data in the estimation of vertical velocity; divergence and then the divergent part of the wind over Indian region. In this scheme, ascending motion over cloudy region is estimated from an empirical relation between the cloud top temperature and descending motion over cloud-free region is estimated from the thermodynamic energy equation and both are blended. From this blended vertical velocity field, aivergence, velocity potential and divergent winds at all standard levels from 4 to 8 July 1979 at 00 UTC are computed. These fields are compared with satellite cloud pictures, rainfall etc and they are found to be realistic in depicting the synoptic conditions. Total wind is computed as the sum of the estimated divergent component and rotational component computed from observed wind field. For assessment of the scheme, this total wind field at 850 hPa is used as initial. guess field in univariate optimum interpolation scheme and analyses were made for the period 4 to 8 July 1979. Results show that scheme is able to produce realistic analyses which included divergent part of the wind.

A four-dimensional survey of the Almeria-Oran front by underwater gliders: Tracers and circulation

A four-dimensional survey by a fleet of 7 underwater gliders was used to identify pathways of subduction at the Almeria-Oran front in the western Mediterranean Sea. The combined glider fleet covered nearly 9000 km over ground while doing over 2500 dives to as deep as 700 m. The gliders had sensors to measure temperature, salinity, velocity, chlorophyll fluorescence and acoustic backscatter. Data from the gliders were analyzed through objective maps that were functions of across-front distance, along-front distance, and time on vertical levels separated by 10 m. Geostrophic velocity was inferred using a variational approach, and the quasigeostrophic omega equation was solved for vertical and ageostrophic horizontal velocities. Peak downward vertical velocities were near 25 m day-1 in an event that propagated in the direction of the frontal jet. An examination of an isopycnal surface that outcropped as the front formed showed consistency between the movement of the tracers and the inferred vertical velocity. The vertical velocity tended to be downward on the dense side of the front and upward on the light side so as to flatten the front in the manner of a baroclinic instability. The resulting heat flux approached 80 W m-2 near 100 m depth with a structure that would cause restratification of the front. One glider was used to track an isotherm over a day for a direct measure of vertical velocity as large as 50 m day-1, with a net downward displacement of 15 m over the day.

SLAM CHARACTERISTICS OF A HIGH-SPEED WAVE PIERCING CATAMARAN IN IRREGULAR WAVES

Slam characteristics of a 112m INCAT wave piercing catamaran in a range of realistic irregular sea conditions are presented in this paper. Towing tank testing of a 2.5 m hydroelastic segmented catamaran model was used to gather a database of slam events in irregular seas. The model was instrumented to measure motions, centrebow surface pressures and forces, encountered wave elevations and wave elevations within the bow area tunnel arches. From these measurements characteristics of the vessel slamming behaviour are examined: in particular relative vertical velocity, centrebow immersion, archway wave elevations and slam load distributions. A total of 2,098 slam events were identified over 22 different conditions, each containing about 80 to 100 slam events. The data, although inherently scattered, shows that encounter wave frequency and significant wave height are important parameters with regard to centrebow slamming. Relative vertical velocity was found to be a poor indicator of slam magnitude and slams were found to occur before the centrebow arch tunnel was completely filled, supporting the application of a two-dimensional filling height parameter as a slam indicator.

How weather events modify aerosol particle size distributions in the Amazon boundary layer

This study evaluates the effect of weather events on the aerosol particle size distribution (PSD) at the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO). This research combines in situ measurements of PSD and remote sensing data of lightning density, brightness temperature, cloud top height, cloud liquid water, and rain rate and vertical velocity. Measurements were obtained by scanning mobility particle sizers (SMPSs), the new generation of GOES satellites (GOES-16), the SIPAM S-band radar and the LAP 3000 radar wind profiler recently installed at the ATTO-Campina site. The combined data allow exploring changes in PSD due to different meteorological processes. The average diurnal cycle shows a higher abundance of ultrafine particles (NUFP) in the early morning, which is coupled with relatively lower concentrations in Aitken (NAIT) and accumulation (NACC) mode particles. From the early morning to the middle of the afternoon, an inverse behavior is observed, where NUFP decreases and NAIT and NACC increase, reflecting a typical particle growth process. Composite figures show an increase of NUFP before, during and after lightning was detected by the satellite above ATTO. These findings strongly indicate a close relationship between vertical transport and deep convective clouds. Lightning density is connected to a large increase in NUFP, beginning approximately 100 min before the maximum lightning density and reaching peak values around 200 min later. In addition, the removal of NACC by convective transport was found. Both the increase in NUFP and the decrease in NACC appear in parallel with the increasing intensity of lightning activity. The NUFP increases exponentially with the thunderstorm intensity. In contrast, NAIT and NACC show a different behavior, decreasing from approximately 100 min before the maximum lightning activity and reaching a minimum at the time of maximum lightning activity. The effect of cloud top height, cloud liquid water and rain rate shows the same behavior, but with different patterns between seasons. The convective processes do not occur continually but are probably modulated by gravity waves in the range of 1 to 5 h, creating a complex mechanism of interaction with a succession of updrafts and downdrafts, clouds, and clear-sky situations. The radar wind profiler measured the vertical distribution of the vertical velocity. These profiles show that downdrafts are mainly located below 10 km, while aircraft observations during the ACRIDICON–CHUVA campaign had shown maximum concentrations of ultrafine particles mainly above 10 km. Our study opens new scientific questions to be evaluated in order to understand the intricate physical and chemical mechanisms involved in the production of new particles in Amazonia.
