Investigating the Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Risk Management Practices

To date, the value of corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities has primarily been measured through the company’s reputation, with little attention given to exploring whether there are internal influences between CSR and other management practices. We argue that the efficacy of CSR extends beyond a company’s reputation for managing social and environmental concerns; in particular, it can influence other business practices such as risk management. Our results suggest that (a) overall, firms with better CSR performance are more likely to adopt integrated risk management practices and (b) CSR activities that target both primary stakeholders and secondary stakeholders are equally important in facilitating the adoption of such risk management practices. Theoretically, we contribute to the CSR literature by providing a possible mechanism for risk reduction and insurance-like effects of CSR. Practically, we provide managerial implications demonstrating that the efficacy of CSR should not be viewed in isolation of other business practices.

ABSTRACT Earning management practices are one of the many things that management can do in achieving company’s goals or management’s personal goals. Through earning management, the company can convey positive signals about the value and achievement of the company to the public. This study aimed to determine out how the impact of environmental aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility on earning management with family ownership as a moderation of causal relationships. This research was conducted at manufacturing companies in the consumer goods industry sector on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2018-2019. The sample selection in this study used purposive sampling method and obtained 43 sample companies using panel data regression analysis techniques for hypothesis testing and processed using Eviews 10. The results of this study indicate that the environmental aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility have a significant negative effect on firm value and risk management is proven to moderate partially the causal relationship.  ABSTRAK Praktik manajemen laba merupakan satu dari banyak hal yang dapat dilakukan manajemen dalam mencapai tujuan perusahaan maupun tujuan pribadi manajemen. Melalui manajemen laba, perusahaan dapat menyampaikan sinyal-sinyal positif tentang nilai dan pencapaian perusahaan kepada publik. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui bagaimana pengaruh tanggung jawab sosial aspek lingkungan terhadap manajemen laba dengan kepemilikan keluarga sebagai moderasi hubungan kausal tersebut. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada perusahaan manufaktur sektor barang dan konsumsi yang terdaftar dalam Bursa Efek Indonesia pada tahun 2018-2019. Pemilihan sampel dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode purposive sampling dan diperoleh 43 perusahaan sampel dengan menggunakan teknis analisis regresi data panel untuk pengujian hipotesis dan diolah menggunakan Eviews 10. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan tanggung jawab sosial aspek lingkungan berpengaruh negatif terhadap manajemen laba dan kepemilikan keluarga terbukti momedari secara parsial hubungan kausal tersebut.

PurposeThis study aims to draw on instrumental and ethical theories to offer a quantitative review of the extant literature on the corporate social responsibility (CSR)–small-medium enterprises (SMEs) performance relationship through a meta-analysis.Design/methodology/approachEmpirical studies from 57 independent peer-reviewed articles, including 66,741 firms, were sampled and analysed. Both subgroup and meta-regression analyses (MARA) were used to test the hypotheses of the study.FindingsThe authors' results demonstrated that social-oriented, economic-oriented and environment-oriented CSR activities have a positive, significant influence on overall, financial and non-financial performance of SMEs; however, the effect of social-oriented CSR activities is the strongest. Moreover, the impact CSR dimensions have on non-financial performance is stronger than on financial performance. Additionally, findings showed that the association between CSR and SME performance is positively and significantly influenced by contextual factors (i.e. sector and region of study) and methodological factors (i.e. performance measurement, study type, theory usage, sampling size and operationalisation of constructs).Originality/valueThe study is the pioneering meta-analytic review on the CSR–SME performance relationship, thereby clarifying the anecdotal results, synthesising the fragmented empirical studies and exploring the contextual and methodological factors that may account for between-study variance. Following the study's findings, the authors delineate insightful suggestions for future scholarship and fine-grained managerial implications for practitioners.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR), understood as a concept of socially responsible business behaviour, is becoming one of the important and actual business practices. Globally more and more MNEs are engaging themselves into CSR activities and see CSR as part of their corporate strategy. This paper presents an analysis of existing CSR strategic options for international companies to choose, and reveals what influences international companies’ decision what strategy and instruments to choose for implementing in a host country or market. In particular, the implementation of CSR strategic options and instruments in Belarus are analysed. The concept of this paper is based on the integration of a theoretical idea and business management practices. Since the object of the research is complex, it required the application of different research methods, such as theory analysis, system analysis, meta-analysis, survey, content-analysis, and expert interview methods. The findings of the study could be useful for foreign companies deciding to enter the Belarusian market, make M&A with local companies, for local managers responsible for CSR at their company, as well for researchers interested in CSR implementation in Eastern Europe.

The newly evolving themes around corporate social responsibility are not restricted to the social consequences of business action but are built around the aspects like sustainability, resource conservation, waste management, customer satisfaction, power saving and employee satisfaction. These new areas of CSR encompass almost all activities of business and all the systems within the business management. There is ample amount of the research showing correlation between management practices and CSR. The fourth Industrial Revolution is one of the technology-based solutions that is been globally adopted by almost all businesses. This involves cyber physical system-based integration of technology and human effort.This research paper’s purposes is to analyse the influence of Industry 4.0 practices independently as well as along with general management practices of the business on CSR. as per the review of literature, the authors have attempted to understand CSR from the evolving perspective of the concept taking it forward from mere business consciousness to socially responsible business practices. The paper analyses how Industry 4.0 based technologies play an effect on cross functional business activities creating a positive impact on CSR initiatives. This study’s findings suggest that Industry 4.0 has a positive along with cross functional business activities effect on the CSR practices of organizations. Although individually both Industry 4.0 and cross functional business activities have a positive impact on CSR but combined impact of both Industry 4.0 and cross functional business activities is slightly better. Looked from this perspective Industry 4.0 can serve as a technology enabler for CSR.The research has created a guideline for improving CSR activities of organisations. It is also revealed how human technology interaction-based Industry 4.0 solutions impact the CSR performances of the organisations.The paper proposes a novel approach of integrating Industry 4.0 technology solutions with business activities for solving CSR issues. It is bringing forth impact of Industry 4.0 as a technology enabler on CSR, which never been thought earlier and it contributes the addition in literature available.

Multinational corporations and international business practices as well as international investment are considered important elements for the diffusion of new modes of production, namely through a flow of cleaner production and new management practices such as corporate social responsibility (CSR). This view is lacking consistency and is not buttressed on strong empirical evidence. The positive driver of environmental sustainability is probably not international business and trade but strong and good institutions. The focus here is on four limitations: the context of the private firms and corporations, the workings of complex organizations, the technology and the right institutions that buttress the global, national and local contexts, taking as concrete examples some specific cases from the Global South, as Mozambique. The article concludes that these aspects have to be considered and contrasted to the technological and management solutions for sustainability. The main objective of this study was to examine the impact of CSR guidelines 2013 on the level of corporate social responsibilities (CSR) activities and their disclosure in Pakistan. This study analyzed the voluntary disclosure guidelines impact on various stakeholders of the top companies of the year listed in Pakistan’s stock exchange for the five years (2011-2015). It is found that the introduction of these guidelines 2013 had a positive impact on the overall level of corporate social responsibilities disclosures (CSRD). It was also observed that the overall trends in the level of CSRD increased gradually within the sample period. There need to be continuous a requirement through regulations and local pressures on the firms for engaging in ethical business practices and to disclose that information to government organizations and general public. Corporations can gain both economically and ethically when they take CSR as marketing and public relation opportunity. Finally, corporations can give itself edge by distinguishing its operations from others and therefore gain competitive advantage.

The article considers the need for enterprises non-financial reports forming. The approaches of scientists to the directions of corporate social responsibility on the basis of sustainable development are revealed. It is established that the main directions of corporate social responsibility on the basis of sustainable development are: organizational management, human rights, labor practices, environment, good business practices, consumer protection, participation in community life and its development. The types of non-financial reporting are studied, namely: report on social and environmental projects, report on progress in the implementation of the principles of the UN Global Compact, report on the GRI standard, management report, integrated report. The components of non-financial reporting of enterprises in the context of corporate social responsibility on the basis of sustainable development are systematized. It is established that the non-financial reporting of the enterprise focuses on the highlighted results of corporate governance, social and environmental aspects and anti-corruption. A study of the components by types of non-financial reports found that they differ in the level of information disclosure. The advantages of compiling non-financial reporting by the enterprise are substantiated, which will provide an opportunity to improve its management, increase investor confidence in it and compare their achievements in the field of corporate social responsibility on the basis of sustainable development with other enterprises. It is proposed to expand the practice of compiling non-financial reports by enterprises, which will contribute to the formation of an effective management system to identify existing and predict potential internal and external threats to its activities, as well as to take measures to minimize the impact of these threats on the results of the enterprise activity on the basis of sustainable development.
