Effects of Concept Maps on Senior Secondary School Students’ Achievement in Ecological Concepts in Ogbomoso South, Nigeria

This study examined the effects of concept maps on Senior School students’ achievement in ecology in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Quasi-experimental design was employed. The population for the study was all SSII Biology students in Ogbomoso South. Four intact classes of 267 students (115 males and 152 females) were sampled. The instrument was Biology Achievement Test. The data were analyzed using t-test, and analysis of covariance findings of the study showed that significant difference exited in the achievement of students taught ecological concepts in biology. It was recommended that biology students should be exposed to concept maps in the learning of biology.

The study examined the effects of Improvised Instructional Material Enhanced Biology Achievement among Secondary School Students in Lapai, Niger State. Quasi-experimental design which involved pretest, posttest, experimental and control group. A total of eight five (85) Senior Secondary two (SSII) students randomly selected from two sampled schools formed the sample size of the study. The instrument used for data collection was a researchers’ designed Biology Achievement Test (BAT). The instrument was validated, and pilot tested and yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.75. Two research questions were raised, and two corresponding null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study, the null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significant. The result of the study showed among others a significant difference in achievement score of the experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group. The finding also showed that both male and female students’ achievements were enhanced equally. It was recommended among others that Biology teachers should be encouraged to improvise instructional materials for effective teaching and learning of Biology.

The study examined the effects of jigsaw-puzzle instructional strategy on secondary school students’ performance on Growth as a concept in Biology in Ukwa West Local Government Area, Abia State.  Gender effect on Biology students’ performance was also investigated. Two objectives, two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. Quasi-experimental design was adopted in this study. One hundred and fifteen (115) Biology students from two mixed secondary schools randomly selected formed the sample size. Biology Performance Test on Growth (BPTOG) which contained twenty (20) multiple choice questions was used for gathering data. Test re-test method was to test the instrument. The BPTOG was validated by two experts in Department of Curriculum Studies and Educational Technology, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Reliability index of 0.76 was obtained using Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation. Mean and Standard deviation were used in answering the research questions and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the academic performance of students in experimental group and those in control. More so, gender has no effect on Biology students’ performance in jigsaw-puzzle group. It was recommended that Biology teachers should adopt Jigsaw-Puzzle Instructional Strategy in this 21st century classroom to encourage group learning among students.

Mathematics has become an important and compulsory school subject in many countries of the world but it has been recognized by many researchers as causing panic and fear for many students and this has often made most of such students to fail the subject. This study therefore sought the effect of gender on the mathematics anxiety of senior secondary school students in Ogun West Senatorial District. The sample size for this study were 270 senior secondary school students 2 (SS2) who were selected through stratified random sampling technique. The Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale-revised (MARS-R) was the only instrument used for the study. The data collected were analysed through Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and t-test. Results revealed a significant difference effect of gender on students’ mathematics anxiety. The study also revealed higher mathematics anxiety scores for male students than the female. The researcher recommended that counselors should use  this study as a theoretical and empirical basis to help counselors see the need to help male students focus more on the subject so as to avoid being anxious. Schools should also sponsor seminars/workshops especially for male students on the importance of mathematics for career progression.

The present study was conducted to ascertain the environmental awareness across gender, locale, type of schools and academic stream among senior secondary school students. The sample of the study comprised of 300 11th class students studying in different government and non- government senior secondary schools of Sambhal district (U.P.) of Moradabad region. Environment Awareness Ability Measure (EAAM) by Praveen Kumar Jha (1998) was used to collect the data for the purpose. The data were analyzed using descriptive (Mean, Standard Deviations) and inferential (‘t’- test) statistics. The findings of the present study revealed that there is significant difference in environmental awareness of senior secondary school students across gender (boys and girls), type of schools (government and non-government) and academic stream (science and arts). However no significant difference is found in case of rural and urban sample. The reason for this result may be the rampant illiteracy in the district. Stakeholders should, therefore, ensure that the curriculum relating to environmental education is transacted as a core curriculum. Other activities related to environmental education viz., curricular, co- curricular and literary activities should also be organized to infuse environmental awareness among students.

Test anxiety constitutes a serious academic impediment to lots of students in schools. This study investigated the Effects of Meditation technique on test anxiety among secondary school students in Anambra State, Nigeria. Two research questions guided the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Quasi-experimental research was adopted in carrying out the study. A sample size of 101 adolescents was chosen from a population of 475 adolescents in SS2 with test anxiety. The sample was derived from two schools selected using purposive sampling technique based on the number of students that scored high on Test Anxiety Inventory. Data relating to research questions were analysed using statistical Mean while data relating to hypothesis was analysed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Findings from the study revealed among others that though the reduction of secondary school students’ test anxiety after meditation technique differed significantly with that of the conventional counselling group, meditation technique was not effective on secondary school students’ test anxiety. It further revealed that meditation technique reduced the secondary school students’ test anxiety. Based on the findings, implications of the study were noted and recommendations made that since the technique meditation was found not to be effective, but significantly reduced the test anxiety of the participants, the technique should not be used alone by the guidance counsellors in helping clients, especially students in overcoming their test anxiety in schools.

The study was on the effect Brain-Based Learning Strategies on the academic achievement of secondary school students in Abuja, Nigeria. The pretest post-test Quasi Experimental Research design was used with a sample of 142 Senior Secondary School Students drawn from two schools. Two intact classes were randomly selected from each school. Data for the study was sourced using the Economics Achievement Test (EAT). The hypothesis was tested at a significant level of 0.05 using ANCOVA. The findings revealed a significant difference in the academic achievement with mean difference of 15.82 in favor of the Experimental Group. The study concluded that Brain-based learning strategies have significant effect on students’ academic achievement as the result indicated that the effect of the treatment, (brain-based learning strategy) was significantly positive on students’ academic achievement in Economics. The study recommended that teachers should adopt the Brain-based learning strategies in teaching Economics by providing a relaxed environment with low threat, good nutrition, physical exercise, movement, drama, drinking of water before and during lessons.

The study determined the effects of mentoring enhanced strategy on secondary school students’  self-regulation (SR) in physics in education zone ‘C’ of Benue State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions while two hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The design of the study was the quasi-experimental, non-randomized, pre-test and post-test control groups. The population of the study consisted of 4,064 SS Two physics students in the 94 schools in Education Zone C. The sample comprised 406 SS Two physics students drawn from 10 schools using multi-stage sampling technique. The research instrument adapted and used for data collection was Students’ Self-Regulation Scale (SSRS). The research instruments was subjected to a reliability analysis using Cronbach’s Alpha Formula which yielded a reliability co-efficient of 0.85. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while inferential statistics of Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that students who were exposed to mentoring exhibited higher self-regulation levels (P = 0.007 ˂ 0.05) than those students who were not exposed to mentoring. There was no significant difference between male and female students’ self-regulation level (P = 0.036 ˃ 0.05). Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that the use of mentoring enhanced strategy should be encouraged and used in physics instruction in secondary schools.

The study examined the Effect of Self-monitoring and Management Strategy on Violent Behaviour among senior secondary School Students. It was guided by two research questions and two hypotheses. A non-equivalent control group Quasi-experimental design involving one treatment and one control group was adopted. A total of 43 senior secondary schools (SSII) classes with high record of Behavioural problems in School within Bida Educational Zone o f Niger State were used for r the study. The instrument used for the study was the Adolescent Behavioural Assessment (ABA) which was validated by experts and used for data collection. Mean, Standard deviation and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to analyze the data collected. The results suggested that the use of self-monitoring and management strategy are efficacious in reducing violent behaviours in schools. Based on the findings, the introduction of peace education in schools to curb the effect of violent behaviour on academic and social development and school psychologist or counsellors’ training on the new strategies to reduce violent behaviour in school are among the recommendations proposed by this study.

This study investigated the effect of Biology practical activities on the academic achievements of senior secondary school biology students in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. The study adopted pretest posttest non-randomized quasi experimental design. Four research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. One hundred and twenty (120) senior secondary school biology students were sampled from the population of 490 SS II students. Four schools were sampled out of 13 Government Secondary Schools in Awgu L.G.A. Instrument for data collection was Biology Achievement Test (BAT) consisting of 21 multiplechoice test items was constructed. The instrument was validated by three experts; one in measurement and evaluation and two in biology education. The reliability test was done using Kuder-Richardson (K-R20) which gave a reliability index of 0.74. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested using t-test. The findings of the study showed that students taught biology using practical activities performed better than their counterparts using conventional method. The result also showed that gender has significant difference on students‟ performance when taught with practicals. The researchers therefore recommended that teachers should employ practical activities in teaching biology to enhance students‟ performance.

<em>This paper examined the incidence of truancy among senior secondary school students in Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State and suggests ways counselling can be used to curb the problem. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study and the design was Ex-post Facto. The sample size was 119 Senior Secondary II students randomly selected from 5 out of the 22 public secondary schools in the local government area. An instrument titled “Incidence of Truancy among Secondary School Students” was used to collect data from the respondents. It had face and content validity through expert judgement and the reliability coefficient was 0.73. The data obtained was analyzed with the Z-test statistics. The results indicated that there is no significant difference between male and female students; urban and rural students and students from high and low socio-economic status homes in their indulgence in truancy. It was recommended that Form Masters/Mistresses should be more objective in taking class attendance and refer truants to guidance counsellors.</em>
