New class of magenta dyestuffs based on azomethine pyrazolone disperse dyes: Synthesis, characterization, and dyeing performance on polyester fabrics with ultraviolet protection and pH-dependent properties

Eight azomethine pyrazolone magenta dyes with iminodiethanol groups have been synthesized from 1,3-disubstituted- 1H-pyrazol-5( 4H)-ones in good yield. The newly synthesized dyes were characterized using spectroscopic data and elemental analyses techniques. All dyes have been successfully applied to polyester fabrics as disperse dyes where their dyeing performances have been discussed and evaluated in detail. The shades of these dyes ranged from red violet, purple and dark purple colors with good depth, brightness and good leveling properties. Multifunctional properties such as color representation, colorimetric data (L*, a*, b*, C*, h*, K/S), fastness properties of the dyed samples with respect to washing, perspiration, rubbing and light fastness have been discussed and evaluated in detail. The degree of exhaustion and fixation was also achieved after establishing the optimal dyeing conditions at 130°C, high pressure, 2% shade, and pH ≈5. As well, the influence of the dye bath pH on the K/S percentage and color intensity was estimated and discussed. Furthermore, the dyed fabrics were tested for ultraviolet protection factor and the results showed that these dyes gave excellent ultraviolet protection.

The current article aims to synthesize some new arylazo-thiophenes for dyeing polyester fabrics and screen their antimicrobial activities. The new 4-arylazo-2-( N-pyrazolylcarboxamido)-thiophene dyes 4a–e were prepared by the reaction of 2-acetyl-2-arylazo-thioacetanilide derivative 1 with 2-chloro- N-(3-methyl-1 H-pyrazol-5-yl)acetamide derivative 2. The structures of these prepared analogues were established via Fourier-transform infrared and 1H/13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The synthesized dyestuffs were applied to polyester fabrics after establishing the optimal dyeing conditions at 130 ºC, high pressure, 3% shade, and liquor ratio 20:1 at pH 5. Furthermore, the dyed fabrics obtained under these optimal conditions resulted in proper colorfastness toward washing, rubbing, sublimation and perspiration, and were adequate for light fastness. They showed respectable antibacterial effectiveness against two bacterial strains, Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) and Salmonella typhimurium (Gram-negative) bacteria. The dyed fabric with dye 4d displayed the best antibacterial activities with percentage reduction of 88% and 76% against S. aureus and S. typhimurium bacteria, respectively.

A key element in reducing human UV exposure is making proper UV protective goods with good ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) protection. The current research is focused on the synthesis of UV-protective functional dyes containing benzophenone-based UV absorbers and its application on wool and silk fabrics. Novel mono azo acid dyes were synthesized by the coupling of diazonium salt solutions of different aromatic amines with 4-hydroxybenzophenone, and these were applied on wool and silk. The fabrics dyed with the synthesized dyes showed less than 5% UVA and UVB transmission, indicating good protection against UV radiation. Dyed fabric also gave good to excellent washing, rubbing, and light fastness, and UV protection properties, even after ten washing cycles.

2-(2′-Hydroxyphenyl)-5-amino-2H-benzotriazole was synthesized and subjected to acylamidation to yield three new ultraviolet (UV) absorbers. The largest absorption wavelength and the relationship between the concentration and the maximum absorbance of the UV absorbers were measured in dimethylsulfoxide. Then the four benzotriazole type UV absorbers were dispersed and applied onto polyester fabrics with the high temperature and pressure dyeing method. The stabilizing effect against UV light of the finished fabrics was studied by ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) and UV transmittance measurement.

Reactive disperse dyes containing monochlorotriazine/sulphatoethylsulphone reactive moieties were synthesized by condensing aniline with cyanuric chloride and further reacting it with a series of monoazo dyes obtained by diazotising 1-aminobenzene-4-β-sulphatoethylsulphone and coupling with various substituted 2-amino-4-phenylthiazole derivatives. The dyeing performance of the dyes was evaluated on polyester and wool fabrics. The dyes obtained gave various shades ranging from reddish to bright red colours. They had good depth and good levelling properties. They dyed fabrics showed moderate to good light fastness properties and very good to excellent fastness to washing and perspiration. The dye bath exhaustion on the polyester and wool fabrics were found to be very good and their fixation values were moderate.

A series of monoazo disperse dyes were synthesized by coupling diazotized 4-amino-N-dodecyl-1,8-naphthalimide with N,N-dialkyl anilines and naphthol derivatives. The synthesized intermediates and the dyes were characterized using FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis (CHN). Visible absorption spectra of the dyes were examined in solvents of different polarities. The electronic absorption spectra cover a wavelength (?max) range of 515-535 nm in DMF at uniformly absorption intensity between 1.59-3.00?104 L mol-1 cm-1. The dyes gave deep and bright intense hues of light violet, maroon, pink and neon red on polyester fabrics. The dyes generally showed good washing and perspiration rating but poor to moderate light fastness properties on woven polyester fabric and could be recommended for commercial outlets.

The aim of the study was to investigate the anti-ultraviolet properties of β-cyclodextrin-grafted cotton fabrics dyed with broadleaf holly leaf extract. Flavonoids were extracted from broadleaf holly leaf by maceration and a stoichiometry of 1:1 inclusion complex with β-cyclodextrin was formed. Characterized by the fluorescence spectrum and ultraviolet spectrophotometry, the fluorescence intensities and ultraviolet absorption of the macerated extract were enhanced by increasing the amount of cyclodextrin. Cotton fabrics were grafted with β-cyclodextrin through a crosslinking reaction based on citric acid in the presence of sodium hypophosphite then dyed with the macerated extract of broadleaf holly leaf used as a natural ultraviolet absorbent. The anti-ultraviolet property of fabrics dyed by a macerated extract was characterized in terms of the ultraviolet protection factor. It was noted that the cotton fabrics grafted with β-cyclodextrin exhibit enhanced anti-ultraviolet and wrinkle recovery properties compared to the unmodified samples and show an excellent durability against 30 washing cycles, accompanied by a loss of tensile strength.

Background. The increasing emission of greenhouse gases has evoked the human being to save the ozone layer and minimize the risk of ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Various fabric structures have been explored to achieve desired ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) in various situations. Objective. In this study, the effect of various filament configurations like twisted, flat, intermingled, and textured in multifilament yarns on fabric in different combinations is assessed in order to engineer a fabric of better ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). Methods. In order to engineer a fabric having optimum UV protection with sufficient comfort level in multifilament woven fabrics, four different yarn configurations, intermingled, textured, twisted, and flat, were used to develop twelve different fabric samples. The most UV absorbing and most demanding fibre polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was considered in different filament configuration. Results. The combinations of intermingled warp with flat, intermingled, and textured weft provided excellent UVR protection comparatively at about 22.5 mg/cm2 fabric areal density. The presence of twisted yarn reduced the UV protection due to enhanced openness in fabric structure. Conclusion. The appropriate combination of warp and weft threads of different configuration should be selected judiciously in order to extract maximum UV protection and wear comfort attributes in multifilament woven PET fabrics.

In the present study, natural dye from cob of purple corn and various metallic salts have been used to identify the proper dyeing condition for attaining high quality natural dyeing along with imparting UV protection property to the dyed silk fabric. Silk fabrics dyed with cob of purple corn extract showed a violetish-pink shade, while those dyed with alum light violetish-pink shade colour. Silk substrates dyed with CuSO4 and FeSO4 gave a yellowish grey and violetish-gray colour, respectively. The fastness properties ranged from fair to good. The ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) values of silk fabric dyed with and without metal mordants ranged between very good and excellent.
