This article provides an overview of current issues confronting educational leaders dedicated to the fundamentals, curriculum, pedagogy, and practices of African-centered education (ACE) and its evolving nature in the 21st century. By considering and situating African-centered leadership in the discussion of educational leadership generally, and within the expanding and prescient notions of leadership for social justice specifically, the article offers useful connections to educational leadership scholars and practitioners who straddle these interdisciplinary domains of scholarship and action as an opportunity to build from the emerging literature within the extant fields of study and to push urban educational leaders and practitioners to think more critically about the direction of ACE theory, practice, and praxis.

The future awaits and is a virtual unknown except for what can be predicted based on what is now known and speculation about potential changes based on that knowledge. This chapter puts forth predictions about major issues educational leaders may face as the 21st century unfolds. Those issues include: the rapidly burgeoning and ever expanding inclusion of technology in education and modern life; balancing the demands of various educational constituencies, the imperatives concomitant with managing soft interpersonal skills; dealing with diversity and plurality; giving credence to equity and social justice; developing and incorporating new modes of instruction and instructional delivery; defining and incorporating new basic skills; globalization of knowledge, communication and education; and managing change. The 21st century will be about educating individuals and the world as a whole. Educational leaders who grasp that concept and act on it will succeed.

The problem of the efficacy of educational leadership as a promoter of just and caring change in schools and communities is explored in the context of educational leadership preparation practices. An exploration of this problem is based on the premise that despite the use of innovative instructional methods, in most cases current preparation programs merely reproduce the use of modernistic administrative practices and organizational structures. Here, the cohort model is identified as a means to promote just, caring, and relevant educational leadership. After a review of the benefits, drawbacks, and the nature of the use of cohorts in leadership preparation programs, a cohort structure is examined that will prepare educational leaders who are able to promote just and caring change in our postmodern communities.

Situated within PK-12 school settings is the most diverse student population this nation has seen. Concern regarding the preparedness of those at the forefront of education bestows the task to educational leadership programs of developing leaders ready to address social justice issues. This study highlights how graduates from one educational leadership program relied on their academic knowledge and applied critical leadership to operationalize social justice praxis. Utilizing a phenomenological approach, 10 semi-structured interviews revealed three themes. Findings suggest educational leadership programs reflect their mission of social justice values through their curriculum to prepare educational leaders for sustainable change.
