Introduction Health policy promotes living well with dementia. Occupational therapists deliver interventions to support people with dementia and family carers to live well. This study aimed at identifying influences on uptake of a community occupational therapy intervention by people with dementia and carers, as little evidence about this topic exists. Method Seventeen semi-structured, paired interviews with people with dementia and carers were conducted as part of the ‘Valuing Active Life in Dementia’ research programme. A secondary, qualitative analysis of these interviews explored influences on uptake of the intervention. Findings Four main themes were identified: ‘Grabbing at straws and keen to take part’; ‘We’re trying to put a routine in’; ‘We didn’t know what to expect’, and ‘Give it a go’. Factors identified as potentially influencing uptake included whether the intervention was perceived as potentially meeting needs for support and activity, and whether participants were struggling to adjust or cope. Conclusion Despite limited expectations or apprehension, uptake of this intervention was demonstrated. Understanding why people with dementia and carers accept intervention offers can inform what occupational therapists provide and how it is offered. Further research is required to determine the occupational therapy interventions people with dementia and carers might find supportive at different stages of the disease trajectory.

ABSTRACTThere is a need to understand the underlying mechanisms at work within health promotion and occupational therapy interventions. The aim of this article was, therefore, to explore and describe how the participants of a group-based occupational therapy intervention with positive health outcomes created meaning of and around their experiences of the intervention. The studied intervention was part of the evaluation of a single-blinded, exploratory randomised controlled trial of three different interventions. A total of 19 participants between 77 and 82 years of age with experiences from the group-based intervention were interviewed, and the transcribed interviews were analysed from a constructivist approach. The results showed five different perspectives of meaning, including enjoyment, usefulness, togetherness, respect for individuality and self-reflection. Based on our findings, we argue that the possibility of getting information, sharing with others and having fun, and the ability to adjust the activities in the intervention so that they met the individual's needs, created meaning for the participants. Moreover, meeting with others supported the participants’ perspectives of themselves. The results are discussed in relation to the pervasive discourse of successful ageing, including how it was present but also challenged within the participants’ accounts of the intervention.

Background. As symptoms of COVID-19 infection are varying in severity and type, the long-term disability is yet to be established due to a short time-window since the pandemic started. Most survivors will have persistent pulmonary symptoms even after the infection, which raises the awareness of the importance of pulmonary rehabilitation in these patients, as they are mostly young, with severely diminished quality of life as they are unable to perform their basic activities of daily living as before. Occupational therapy is a form of rehabilitation treatment aimed at maximizing functionality and independence in performing activities of daily living, improvement of the patient’s autonomy and prevention of further functional decline. Objective. The purpose of the current work is to review the most important occupational therapy interventions applicable during a pulmonary rehabilitation program for chronic pulmonary pathologies, that can also be applied in COVID-19 survivors with persistent respiratory symptoms. Discussion. The main objectives of occupational therapy in pulmonary rehabilitation are training using breathing techniques at rest and during task performance, upper limbs training to increase exercise tolerance, programming and simplifying daily activities, informing patients of the importance of asking for help, planning the day/week, organizing the environment, educating the patient. All these objectives can be achieved in a simple way and at low-cost. Conclusions. Occupational therapy intervention during comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation must be promoted to specifically evaluate and solve problems related to respiratory disability. Occupational tasks should be related to symptoms occurring during specific activities. Standardized protocols and definition of outcomes during occupational therapy intervention are lacking. Keywords: occupational therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, COVID-19, activities of daily living, quality of life,

This article discusses the use of a cooking workshop as a promoter resource of the deinstitutionalization. Occupational therapists, known for their ability to coach others through difficult changes, now find themselves in changing environments that include clients' desire for participation in service delivery, and the need for evidence of the outcome of occupational therapy intervention. This paper proposes a process model that is based on core concepts of occupation and client-centred practice, that incorporates theoretical approaches, and can be applied to all clients. The process model coaches the occupational therapist through a client-centred problemsolving process. It represents a description or plan for occupational therapy assessment and intervention that leads to a collaborative approach to client-identified occupational performance issues. Examples of the application of the process to occupational therapy practice are included. This model helps to articulate core concepts and values, and provides guidance for occupational therapy practice within changing environments and expectations.

Statement of context Occupational therapists in clinical practice are required to deliver interventions within clinical trials to demonstrate the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions. Challenges to participation in intervention research by occupational therapists working in community mental health have been identified and require further investigation. Critical reflection on practice A cross-sectional online survey of occupational therapists working in mental health was used, and obtained a 50% ( n = 144) response rate. Limited time, large generic caseloads, and lack of skills and experience in research were identified barriers to participation in occupational therapy intervention research. Occupational therapists had limited dedicated time to carry out occupational therapy interventions and outcome measurement was limited. Implications for practice Occupational therapy roles need to be regained in adult community mental health alongside routine outcome measurement. This will enable occupational therapy interventions to contribute to community mental health services and support participation in clinical trials of occupational therapy interventions.

The purpose of the study is to determine the current provisions on occupational therapy interventions for children with ASD, features of their practical implementation and effectiveness based on the analysis of research data. Materials and methods. This work is the result of the analysis of scientific and methodological developments on the practical implementation of occupational therapy interventions in terms of timing and scope, complexity and role of the family; comparison of research results, which are devoted to the study of the effectiveness of behavioral therapy and SI, as the main interventions of occupational therapists. Results. Early rehabilitation of a child with ASD contributes to the formation of the necessary skills in everyday life and communication. To date, the largest evidence base has been accumulated by intervention programs, which are based on the principles of improving parent-child relations and are aimed at developing social and communication skills. Occupational therapy in ASD is aimed at overcoming motor anxiety, disorders of large and fine motor skills, coordination of movements and ability to learn, speech. SI-based occupational therapy is used to improve the processing of sensory information, improve the efficiency of "registration" and modulation of the senses, as well as help in the formation of simple adaptive responses. The effectiveness of sensory and motor interventions is manifested in positive changes in the social interaction of children, purposeful play and normalization of sensitivity. Sensory interventions of occupational therapists can reduce maladaptive behavior, hyperactivity, as well as inhibit self-stimulation, stereotyped movements and improve attention. Researchers recommend that occupational therapists combine sensory interventions with functional tasks that help the child's practice in achieving the goal of the activity. Conclusions. There is a large number of approaches and techniques used in occupational therapy for children with ASD. Given the lack of evidence to determine the most effective of them, it should be noted that additional research is needed to address this issue

The past decade has seen the emergence of rehabilitation treatments using virtual reality environments. One of the main advantages of using this technology is that it creates positive motivation. Currently, most virtual-reality-based games for children are not suitable for use in a therapeutic setting. This case study reports on the use of Growing with Timocco, a specially devised virtual reality computer game, as part of an occupational therapy regimen that addressed the developmental needs of a five-year-old patient diagnosed with dyspraxia, impaired postural structure, weak shoulder, and insufficient bilateral integration, bilateral coordination, and proprioception regulation. Developed specifically for use by occupational therapists and caregivers working with children, Growing with Timocco is equipped to provide exercises for both cognitive and motor skills, but most importantly, it provides a positive setting for this practice, by harnessing the advantages of VR to promote play, pleasure, and motivation.

This paper presents the findings of a survey conducted in the Winter of 1986 by the Sensory Integration: Toronto Study Group designed to investigate the use of sensory integration in clinical settings. The survey was distributed to occupational therapists in Southern Ontario who offer services to children with sensory integrative dysfunction. The results are discussed in relation to occupational therapy practice, literature and research. The findings suggest that sensory integration therapy is one of manytheoretical frameworks incorporated into occupational therapy programs for this population. In view of this information, the paper discourages the use of the term “sensoryintegration therapist” as it does not adequately represent the varied approach utilized by the respondents in this study or the extent of knowledge and skills they appear to possess. The paper proposes that the holistic nature of occupational therapy intervention needs to be considered in research designs to ensure valid and clinically relevant evaluation of sensory integration procedures.

Background/AimsStudies investigating the effect of occupational therapy in mental health are few. This scoping review aims to identify, present and assess studies that have investigated the effect of occupation- and activity-based/focused interventions performed by occupational therapists in mental health.MethodsThe scoping review involved searching six databases, covering articles from 2003 to 2018. ‘The Matrix Method’ was used to describe and synthesise the content of the included studies. The Oxford Level of Evidence was used to rank the evidence, and The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme was used to assess the quality of the study.ResultsA total of 21 original studies and 4 systematic reviews were included in this review. Interventions, approaches, programmes, training, and activities such as cooking, artwork, crafts, pottery, sports, calligraphy, horticulture, and music, organised individually or in groups, were investigated in the included studies. Individualised occupational therapy showed clinically significant improvements in social functioning and cognition, promising results were found on supported employment and education.ConclusionsFew high-quality studies that have investigated the effect of occupation-and activity-based/focused interventions performed by occupational therapists in mental health were found. This scoping review highlights the importance of future high quality studies to support evidence-based practice within mental health occupational therapy.
