Introducing Reflexivity to Evaluation Practice

There is currently a paucity of literature in the field of evaluation regarding the practice of reflection and reflexivity and a lack of available tools to guide this practice—yet using a reflexive model can enhance evaluation practice. This paper focuses on the methods and results of a reflexive inquiry that was conducted during a participatory evaluation of a project targeting homelessness and mental health issues. I employed an action plan composed of a conceptual model, critical questions, and intended activities. The field notes made throughout the reflexive inquiry were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Results clustered in categories of power and privilege, evaluation politics, the applicability of the action plan, and outcomes. In this case study, reflexivity increased my competence as an evaluation professional: The action plan helped maintain awareness of how my personal actions, thoughts, and personal values relate to broader evaluation values—and to identify incongruence. The results of the study uncovered hidden elements and heightened awareness of subtle dynamics requiring attention within the evaluation and created opportunities to challenge the influence of personal biases on the evaluation proceedings. This reflexive model allowed me to be a more responsive evaluator and can improve practice and professional development for other evaluators.

Mental health have become a very influential topic around the world due to the increase of mental health issues that have been reported through national research and surveys. Many studies have been done along the years around the barriers in regards to seeking help in deferent countries and communities. This research aims to look closely into these barriers targeting issues and potential solutions, specifically for Saudi Arabia. Recently, the use of e-mental health services have proven to be an effective method to improve is barriers to mental health treatment. However, this chapter addresses the application and suitably of e-mental health programs for Saudi Arabia mental health services. To do so, a case study of Australian e-mental health services was selected to assist with the investigations.

School nurses address mental health issues of youth on a daily basis. These mental health issues include substance abuse, anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation. Mental health first aid is a process that seeks to help medical professionals and laypeople recognize and address someone that is having a mental health or substance abuse crisis. This article will describe an experience with a student having suicidal ideations and how the mental health action plan was used.

In this paper, we undertake a case study of the National Hockey League’s supplementary discipline regime to reflect on the ways in which discourses about social harm are configured, taken up and used in the sporting landscape and how they reflect and reify narrow understandings of crime and punishment. We find that the hockey world employs predictable crime and justice metaphors when discussing on-ice violence and suggest this breeds fear and legitimates governance strategies. The National Hockey League’s supplemental discipline process itself—much like penality away from the rink—is characterized by multiple, sometimes contradictory, objectives. Notably, the league responsibilizes players, long endorsing or accepting vigilantism, refusing to enact structural changes, and compelling players themselves to create a safe workplace. This regime has contributed to financial struggles, chronic physical and mental health issues, and the early deaths of a host of former players.

Active labour market policies (ALMPs) are often seen as a panacea for dealing with labour market exclusion, especially when it comes to young people with mental health issues. Such policies demand considerable involvement from employers, placing more responsibility in their hands. Yet, there remains a notable knowledge gap concerning the actual role that employers play in processes of inclusion in the labour market. In this article, we provide knowledge about what employers do in order to include young people with mental health issues into the workforce, what roles they play in these processes, and what motivations underlie their endeavours. We argue that, due to organizational changes to occupational rehabilitation in Norway, employers must increasingly occupy a vacancy left open by social workers. While this situation has demanded further responsibility from employers, they are quite often insufficiently educated or trained to deal with such issues.We address what consequences this could have for young people with mental health issues striving to enter the labour market.

The unprecedented episode of the Covid-19 pandemic has been a massive shock to individuals all across the globe. Overwhelmed healthcare conditions, stringent lockdowns and plummeting economies have been a huge blow, especially for low- and middle-income countries. In the first phase of the pandemic, India had performed relatively better than most of the other nations in its income strata. However, the second wave of the disease had severe impacts on healthcare as well as the economy. In this light, individuals residing within the country were faced with an uphill task of evading the virus and keeping their mental health intact. This paper takes a dig into the mental health of Indian residents during the second wave of the pandemic (May 2021) through an analysis of a collected sample. The sample consisted of 400 participants (59% males, 40.25% females; mean age=26 years). The DASS-21 index was used to assess the mental state of citizens amidst an ongoing nationwide lockdown. A significant association was obtained between Covid-19, depression and overall DASS index. Thus, the importance of addressing mental health issues during a prevailing pandemic has been identified, and subsequent policy recommendations have been prescribed.

The readiness and mental challenges of health care front-liners are one of the big issues that need to be addressed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) and also the Malaysian Board of Counselors (MBC). This is to ensure that all threats to health care front-liners can be overcome in order to streamline the duties of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia. Therefore, this study aims to understand the readiness and mental challenges of health front workers (Font liners) in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. This study uses a qualitative design with a case study approach. The study participants consisted of two medical officers and two nurses from the states of Johor and Sabah who had more than six months of experience in handling COVID-19 cases. Study data were obtained through semi-structured interview techniques. The findings state that there are two sub-theme codes from the mental readiness of health care front liners and four subtrahend codes from the mental challenges of health care front liners in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from this study can be used by the MOH and MBC in dealing with the possible mental health issues of the health care front liner, post-COVID-19 in Malaysia.

Chapter 15 explores the ways culture shapes the perceptions, diagnosis, causes, and treatment of mental health issues. It discusses abnormal behavior criteria; cultural syndromes such as hwa-byung and hikikomori; universal mental disorders such as schizophrenia, alcoholism, and suicide; the connection between culture and depression; and cross-cultural comparisons of depression. It addresses treatment of psychological disorders and mental health issues and Western and indigenous healing approaches. Also covered are minority, migrant, and refugee mental health experiences; obstacles to treatment such as language and cultural value barriers; and improvements in mental health care for vulnerable groups. The challenges reflect the ‘3 Rs’ of values-based practice by which (as described in our concluding chapter 47, “Co-writing Values: What We Did and Why We Did It”) we have been guided in developing this book: Raising awareness, chapter 44, “Reflections on the Impact of Mental Health Ward Staff Training in Race Equality and Values-Based Practice”, a project combining race equality training and values-based practice for ward staff; Recognition, chapter 45, “Connecting Patients, Practitioners and Regulators in Supporting Positive Experiences and Processes of Shared Decision-Making in Osteopathy: A Case Study in Co-production”, a project in positive practice bringing together regulators, clinicians and patients; and Respect, chapter 46, “Beyond the Colour Bar: Sharing Narratives in Order to Promote a Clearer Understanding of Mental Health Issues Across Cultural and Racial Boundaries”, a project aimed at getting beyond the colour bar between white and black in mental health diagnosis.
