This panel will focus upon work systems design from a macroergonomic perspective. The panel will investigate the future of work systems from the viewpoint of: (1) an activity performed by; (2) humans with particular characteristics; (3) in a context. The researchers and practitioners on the panel have focused on one or more of these dimensions of work design/redesign, product design or organizational design. The design of 21st Century systems must take this broader perspective. In the same way, this panel mirrors the diversity of backgrounds, cultures and contexts for future work systems.

This summary outlines major themes introduced during a multiple-session symposium series devoted to the topic of work design in the 21st century. The 6 sessions in the series address the future of work design in relation to: (1) macroergonomic analysis of work systems design; (2) production systems design and automation of work; (3) human factors research needs in internet design; (4) design of education and training; (5) work design and community design; and (6) work in extreme environments. Session chairs participated in a 7th panel session to offer perspectives on the future of work design in relation to session topics. These perspectives are summarized here. The panel co-chair, Michael Wade, also provides a perspective on future trends in the integration of work and recreation. Collectively, the session and panel participants provide a rich body of judgment and opinion regarding the trajectory and evolution of work design in the coming decades, as well as likely reciprocal interactions between changes in work design and transformations in performance of human sociotechnical, organizational and socioeconomic systems.

The way human being “work” to earn their living has transformed over a period of time. There was a time when human beings used to go to work but now the work has come to the doorstep , in fact it has occupied its space in the bed room and on the dining table. We actually pack it as we go out for a family outing .It does not end there, research shows that we get the best of ideas to solve office problems ,when we are outing, trekking , watching TV but the organizations still have the same good, old attendance tracking system. The employers are still so conscious whether the knowledge employees show in the office and importantly, show on time. The researcher in this conceptual paper tries to unravel the features of modern and future work. He suggests a method which can be followed by organizations which can help themto track modern day knowledge work more effectively.

When a society is undergoing transformational change, it is a challenge for all involved to step outside their immediate context sufficiently to evaluate its implications. In the current digital revolution driving Industry 4.0, the pace of change is rapid, and its scale and complexity can inhibit a proactive, rather than reactive, response. Yet if it were possible to return to the first industrial revolution, armed with twenty-first century knowledge and historical perspective, planning for a healthy society and the future of work could have been very different. This chapter aims to support educational leadership in the development of proactive strategies to respond to the challenges and opportunities of Industry 4.0 to inform the future of work, industry, and society. This is framed through the lens of product design, with its unique position at the nexus of engineering and the humanities, and directly tied to changes affecting manufacturing in the fourth industrial revolution.

The whole world is in the process of massive changes in the way in which business is conducted. Under the loose heading of globalization, we have seen an interrelated set of changes driven by a number of converging factors. These same global changes have in turn sparked new forms and balances of organisations. Eventually, these effects must be accompanied by new ways in which people will perform within organisations. We are moving towards globalization of production, customers, capital and workforce concerns. While the quality revolution was one of the driving forces behind globalization, there is now an impact of its very success back onto quality. With slack removed from work systems, quality is demanded for efficient, effective operations, but quality itself can suffer under the impacts of downsizing, longer working times and instant demands for change.

PurposeThe world is witnessing the advent of a wide range of technologies like machine learning, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, robotics, additive manufacturing, augmented and virtual reality, cloud computing, Internet of Things and such others. Amidst this concoction of diverse technologies, the future of work is getting redefined. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to understand the future of work in the context of an emerging economy like India.Design/methodology/approachThe authors undertook a qualitative research with a positivist approach. The authors undertook expert interviews with 26 respondents. The respondents were interviewed with a semi-structured open-ended questionnaire. The responses were content analyzed for themes. System dynamics was applied to explicate the phenomenon studied.FindingsThe authors found that the future of work has multiple facets. The authors found that in future, organizations would not only use automation for lower end routine manual jobs, but also for moderate knowledge-centric tasks. Future jobs would have significant data dependency, and employees would be expected to analyze and synthesize data for sense making. Another finding pointed out that in future, individuals would be constantly required for skills upgradation and thus learning would become a continuous lifelong process. In future, individuals would get short-term tasks rather than long-term secured jobs. Thus, job flexibility would be high as freelancing would be a dominant way of work. Organizations would reduce dedicated workspaces and would use co-working spaces to reduce office space investments. In future, jobs that are impregnated with novelty and creativity would remain. A finding of concern was that with the advent of automated technologies a larger portion of workforce would lose jobs and there could be widespread unemployment that might lead to social unrest. The provision of universal basic income has been advocated by some experts to handle social crisis.Research limitations/implicationsThis research is based on an organization centric view that is anchored in the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities. The research contributes to the conversation of human resource co-existence with automated technologies for organizations of tomorrow. Thus, this work specifically contributes to strategic human resource with technology capabilities in organizations.Practical implicationsThese research findings would help organizational design and development practitioners to comprehend what kind of interventions would be required to be future ready to both accommodate technology and human resources. For policy makers, the results of this study would help them design policy interventions that could keep the nation’s workforce job ready in the age of automated technologies through investments in automated technology education.Originality/valueIndia is bestowed with one of the largest English-speaking, technically qualified young workforce working at lower salary levels than their developed county counterparts. The advent of automated technologies ushers in challenges and opportunities for this young qualified workforce to step into future. This is the first study from India that deliberates on the “future of work” in India.

There are many predicted changes for the future of work. These changes will have significant implications for the type of work that people will do and the careers they will have. The question for many higher education institutions is what can be done to support students in preparing for what is predicted to be a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) future. In this chapter, work-integrated learning (WIL) will be explored as a model of education particularly useful in preparing students for a VUCA world. The chapter will examine one WIL program in particular, the University of Waterloo's co-op program, and consider how its design aligns and supports students in preparing for their future work.

Work as we know it has changed with the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Prior to the advent of the 41R, skill gaps have been widening. Though the 4IR comes with bright projections, it also will predict the way things are done and the requisite skills to have. Clearly, not everyone will be up to date with the needed skills in the future work environment. Intricate underlying factors about the future of work have fuelled debates bothering on the issues of digitization on work and professions, artificial intelligence (AI), and the uncertainty of work and careers left after automation. The changing patterns of work and work arrangements, the gig economy, as well as fissured jobs (involving employment as outsourced services) are of great concern. Also rife are matters around work-skill misalignment expected in the 4IR as the presentation skills that employees have may not be relevant in the new world of work. Therefore, skill obsolescence and the need to reskill and/or upskill is expected.
