Introduction Undergraduate Geriatrics training in Colombia is still limited. The short rotation time forces to adopt efficient teaching strategies. A study was designed to assess the development of skills through a problem-based learning strategy compared to the traditional methodology. Methodology Experimental study, mixed methodological approach. Undergraduate students who started Geriatrics rotation were randomized to an PBL strategy (intervention) or seminars (control). Skills were defined to address delirium and falls / osteoporosis. The development of skills was evaluated through OSCE and written test. Results 18 students, age media 21 (19-24). 55.6% women. The final written test in the PBL group was 4.02 vs. 3.02 in control (p0.0053). The OSCE score in the PBL group was 2.72 vs. 2.03 in control (p 0.0624). Only 4 students (belonging to PBL) approved the OSCE. The interprofessional work skill had greater development in the PBL group (3.58 vs. 2.04 p 0.0051). The appreciation regarding the realization of seminars is that it only demands memorial knowledge; PBL strengthens the development of cognitive skills and collaborative work. Regarding the OSCE evaluation technique, it was highlighted that the student faces an environment closer to the professional practice. Conclusions The PBL favored a greater development of skills in Geriatrics both in the written test and in the OSCE. There was a better resolution of the stations concerning interrogation capacity, performance of functional tests and interprofessional work.

Work as we know it has changed with the emergence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Prior to the advent of the 41R, skill gaps have been widening. Though the 4IR comes with bright projections, it also will predict the way things are done and the requisite skills to have. Clearly, not everyone will be up to date with the needed skills in the future work environment. Intricate underlying factors about the future of work have fuelled debates bothering on the issues of digitization on work and professions, artificial intelligence (AI), and the uncertainty of work and careers left after automation. The changing patterns of work and work arrangements, the gig economy, as well as fissured jobs (involving employment as outsourced services) are of great concern. Also rife are matters around work-skill misalignment expected in the 4IR as the presentation skills that employees have may not be relevant in the new world of work. Therefore, skill obsolescence and the need to reskill and/or upskill is expected.

Abstract

Laboratory employee is a education labor which help process learning college student within part of vocational and academic. The paper provides understanding of managers’ rationales and constraints when hiring foreign workers in the manufacturing and manufacturing related services sectors in Singapore. Using purposive and quota sampling methods, the study covers in-depth interviews with 25 managers from multinational companies from Singapore’s five leading industries, in the manufacturing sector and manufacturing related services sector. Analysing qualitative data from the structuration perspective show that managers’ choices are shaped by the changing foreign labour policy that limit the hiring of foreign workers from specific countries according to different levels of skills. Reasons for hiring unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled foreign workers vary which ranging from ‘blended low labour cost’ to shortage of domestic labour, right attitude to work, skill mismatch of domestic labour, high salary demands by domestic labour, accreditation and innovation capability, and relevant knowledge, skills and language proficiency. As the dependency ratio for foreign workers continue to narrow, in the near future, managers would have to search for limited skilled workers within the Singapore’s domestic labour market. The post-pandemic Covid-19 crisis would disrupt the future demand for unskilled foreign workers as the adoption of automation would increase and managers would have to readapt to the new economic scenario.
