The school nurse is the most consistent healthcare provider for students who require scheduled intermittent self-catheterization; however, there is little literature regarding the role of the school nurse for educating and promoting self-catheterization independence for pediatric populations in the school setting. School nurses are dependent on research to identify best practices when implementing teaching strategies with young students who are ready to start catheterizing independently. The intent of this article is to contribute relevant information that is both useful and evidence based, so the school nurse is equipped with information to support the assessment, planning, and implementation of independent self-catheterization of school-age children. Additionally, this article will examine how to determine candidates for independent self-catheterization, product information and procedure guidelines, and coordination with caregivers and other members of the school health team to provide best outcomes for students diagnosed with neurogenic bladder in the school setting.

The purpose of this review is to analyze the school nursing role within the National Healthy School Standard (NHSS) in the United Kingdom with a view toward clarifying and strengthening the role of school nurses globally. Within the National Healthy School Standard framework, school nurses serve an integral role in linking health and education partnerships to promote effective school health programs. School nurse contributions to the National Healthy School Standard, as well as barriers and supports, are discussed. Additionally, the methods school nurses implement to partner, to manage service delivery, and to work with schools are outlined. The central role of school nurses within the National Healthy School Standard framework provides a guide for school nurses in the United States to demonstrate their importance as key players in healthy schools that promote health and education. The framework deserves recognition as a foundational model to help strengthen both the school nurse role and school health programs around the world.

This article is the second part of a two-part series on mental health in school-age children. The focus of this article is on mental health assessment in the school setting, including the use of screening tools, with a review of common medications prescribed for youth with anxiety and depression. Students with mental health conditions frequently seek refuge in the school health office, many times for psychosomatic complaints such as stomach ache, headache, nausea, and fatigue. School nurses need to be adept to assess mental health and intervene as necessary.

Health Jeopardy was developed by members of the School Nurse Organization of Minnesota to present information about health and to market the role of the school nurse. Although it was created for the Minnesota State Fair, it has been used in a variety of community settings. This interactive and fun game has been popular with both children and adults. Contestants were selected from the state fair audience, and each competed for prizes by answering questions about school health under the five categories of first aid and safety, nutrition, immunizations, communicable diseases, and school nurse facts. In addition to the state fair, Minnesota school nurses have used this game as both an informational and promotional tool in their school and community fairs.

The school nurse has a crucial role in the seamless provision of comprehensive health services to children and youth. Increasing numbers of students enter schools with chronic health conditions that require management during the school day. This policy statement describes for pediatricians the role of the school nurse in serving as a team member in providing preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, and referrals to foster health and educational success. To optimally care for children, preparation, ongoing education, and appropriate staffing levels of school nurses are important factors for success. Recommendations are offered to facilitate the working relationship between the school nurse and the child’s medical home. This statement has been endorsed by the National Association of School Nurses.

Electronic, or “e”-cigarette use has been adopted by an alarming number of teens in recent years. E-cigarettes are neither legal for youth nor considered safe for use by youth. E-cigarette companies have targeted youth in their marketing strategies and developed appealing flavors with high nicotine content to ensure dependence on their products. Schools lack adequate resources and capacity to address e-cigarette use, relying mostly on punitive sanctions for what is essentially a health issue. School nurses can help their districts and schools by navigating appropriate consequences for vaping, providing accurate information and education, providing cessation resources, advocating for student support, and informing stakeholders on population health strategies to prevent initiation and reduce youth e-cigarette use.

Tooth avulsions occur when a tooth is displaced from its socket. Tooth avulsions are common dental injuries that may occur before, during, or after school. Therefore, it is essential that school nurses be well prepared to intervene when such a dental emergency arises. It is also imperative that school nurses and school personnel are fully equipped to manage a tooth avulsion. Time is of the essence when attempting to save an avulsed tooth. The goal is to successfully reinsert the avulsed tooth and to preserve the periodontal ligament. The school nurse is responsible for implementing the appropriate actions needed to save the avulsed tooth.

School nurses are crucial to addressing adolescent mental health, yet evidence concerning their evolving role has not been synthesized to understand interventions across levels of practice (i.e., individual, community, systems). We conducted an integrative review of school nurse roles in mental health in the U.S. related to depressive symptoms, anxiety, and stress. Only 18 articles were identified, published from 1970 to 2019, and primarily described school nurses practicing interventions at the individual level, yet it was unclear whether they were always evidence-based. Although mental health concerns have increased over the years, the dearth of rigorous studies made it difficult to determine the impact of school nurse interventions on student mental health outcomes and school nurses continue to feel unprepared and under supported in this area. More research is needed to establish best practices and systems to support school nursing practice in addressing mental health at all levels of practice.
