Mediating Role of Job Satisfaction on Turnover Intentions and Job Mismatch Among Millennial Employees in Bengaluru

The millennials have become the largest cohort in the workforce, and their retention has become challenging for policymakers and organizations. Millennials are career-oriented and are ready to switch jobs if there is a mismatch in skills and job requirement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating role of job satisfaction on turnover intention and job mismatch among millennial employees in Bengaluru. The study consists of 247 millennial employees from different industries of Bengaluru. Statistical tools such as SPSS 20, AMOS 20, and Sobel-Z test have been used for analysis. It is found from our research study that job mismatch is having a positive relationship with turnover intention, while job satisfaction is having a negative relationship with turnover intention. The relation between job mismatch and job satisfaction is negative. The findings demonstrated that job satisfaction partially mediated the relationships between job mismatch and turnover intentions. It was concluded from the study that millennials consider personal growth as the major factor, which influences their job satisfaction. This study is of practical importance as it impacts organizational practices (specifically human resource management practices).

The turnover of faculty members is a pressing problem that has adversely affected the performance and productivity of higher education institutions. The purpose of this study is to examine the direct effect of person-organisation fit (POF) and person-job fit (PJF) on faculty members’ turnover intentions. Furthermore, the study explores the mediating role of PJF between POF and turnover intention. Data collected from faculty members of public sector colleges (n = 250) were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results, contrary to our expectations, revealed that POF is not a significant predictor of faculty turnover intention. However, the results provided support for the negative relationship between PJF and turnover intention. Additionally, as predicted, the results confirmed that PJF mediates the relationship between POF and turnover intention. The findings also revealed that the reliability and validity of the adopted/adapted scales change in the context of different countries and organisational settings. The theoretical and practical implications, research limitations and directions for future research are provided.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship among job training satisfaction (JTS), job satisfaction (JS) and turnover intention (TI) and moreover, the role of JS in the relationship between the JTS and TI. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was used in this study for a sample size of 115. The principal component analysis was carried out to examine the factors in JTS and JS. The regression and mediation analyses were applied to assess the relationship among the JTS, JS and TI. Findings – A significantly negative relationship between JTS and TI was found and mediated by JS. The paper also suggests that JS is positively related to JTS but is negatively related to TI, which is in accordance with what have been reported in the earlier studies. Practical implications – This study reinforced the significance of job training in human resource management practices. The employees’ satisfaction with job training that would lead to higher JS and lower TIs was emphasized. Therefore, it becomes important for HRD professionals to consider both the delivery of the training to the employees and the employees’ satisfaction with the training approach when designing the training program. Originality/value – While many different variables have been studied in the relationship with TI, the JTS is rarely discussed. This paper attempts to examine the relationship among JTS, JS and TI with addition of new insights.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the contours of fairness by showing how different facets of fairness impact three important employee outcomes (job satisfaction, turnover intention and employer advocacy) and examining the mediating role of quality of management and leadership (through perceptions of both senior management and the quality of exchange with immediate supervisors) in attenuating negative impacts of unfairness on these outcomes. The study extends the concept of fairness beyond the traditional focus on organizational justice and models the mediating role of leadership on the relationship between (un)fairness and the three employee-level outcomes in a sample of employees representative of the UK workforce. Design/methodology/approach – Data were obtained from a nationally representative sample of 2,067 employees in the UK. Exploratory factor analysis and then confirmatory factor analysis is used to refine three unfairness factors and address their dimensionality of the unfairness scale and then multiple regression analysis is used to test a fairness-leadership-employee performance outcome model. Findings – Results of multiple regression analysis revealed that both trust in leadership and leader-member exchange partially mediate the relationship between organizational (un)fairness and job satisfaction, advocacy and turnover intention, respectively. Practical implications – The findings highlight the important role that leaders play in influencing the relationship between perception of unfairness and employee outcomes. This has implications for both theory and practice as it suggests that the pattern of inclusion that leaders create through the relationships that they develop with their followers has a significant impact on the relationship between unfairness and the work outcomes. They not only must manage traditional perceptions of justice, but also the assessments employees make about trust in management judgements and the perceived consequences of such judgements. Originality/value – In an environment where perceptions of unfairness are becoming both more endemic but also more complex, the study shows that both senior leaders and immediate supervisors have important agency in managing negative consequences. Through the measurement of satisfaction, turnover intention and employer advocacy it also provides potential links to link fairness into the engagement literature.

In this study, the authors contribute insight into the relationship between pay satisfaction and turnover intention as well as between job satisfaction and turnover intention amongst young Indian professionals by segregating the respondents into two groups based on the median age. Data were collected from 230 working Indian executives, having median age of 25, from various industries such as Information Technology, Public Sector Units, Pharmacy, and Fast Moving Consumer Goods where they expressed their views on turnover intentions, job satisfaction & pay satisfaction in their respective organizations. The results revealed the negative relationship between turnover intention and job satisfaction and also between turnover intention and pay satisfaction. However, when age is introduced as a variable having a moderating effect on the above relationships, it was noticed that pay satisfaction is more significant than job satisfaction when it comes to intention to quit a job for employees who are relatively experienced having an age greater than the median age of 25; whereas, for employees less than the median age, turnover intention is driven more by job satisfaction than pay satisfaction. Findings from this study offer important implications for theory & research in turnover intention driven by factors like pay satisfaction and job satisfaction with the moderating effect of age of employees.

This chapter is based on the servant leadership theory's effects on the turnover intention through the mediating role of burnout. The basic concepts of the model are derived from conservation of resources theory. The theory predicts that sustained psychological stress can lead to burnout and turnover intention. Servant leadership focuses on reducing the employee stress level and increasing job satisfaction. The study focuses on the banking industry employees and finds the main reasons of high turnover.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of organizational justice on turnover-intention via the mediating influences of organizational commitment and job satisfaction. In addition, the study aims at incorporating all four facets of organizational justice (procedural, distributive, interpersonal and informational) in an attempt to test the model in a developing country context. Design/methodology/approach The study targeted employees in the airline industry working for airline companies currently operating in Jordan. A count of 323 questionnaires were directly distributed and completed and returned by employees yielding a response rate of 81 percent. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Findings The results led to the acceptance of all hypotheses. Most importantly, it was confirmed that both organizational commitment and job satisfaction had a mediating effect on the relationship between organizational justice and turnover-intention. While job satisfaction fully mediated the relationship, organizational commitment only had a partially mediating effect. Originality/value The study took a step beyond the simple linear models typically used in the literature by proposing a more complex one that investigated the mediating role of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Moreover, the researchers applied this model to a developing country setting in order to bridge the research gap.

Purpose This study aims to examine the role of deviant status (lower vs higher rank) and organizational structure (vertical vs horizontal) on individuals’ responses to workplace deviance. Design/methodology/approach Two studies (N = 472) were designed to examine the role of deviant status and organizational structure in responses to workplace deviance. Study 1 (N = 272) manipulated deviant status and organizational structure. Study 2 (N = 200) also manipulated deviant status but focused on participants’ subjective evaluations of the organizational structure of their workplace. Findings Study 1 found that participants reported lower job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and higher turnover intentions when they imagined being confronted with deviant behaviors displayed by a manager (vs by a subordinate), regardless of the type of organizational structure. Study 2 extended this finding by showing that the indirect effect of organizational structure (vertical vs horizontal) on turnover intention via job satisfaction and organizational commitment was moderated by deviant status: when the deviant’s status was higher, working in a vertical (vs horizontal) organization was associated with decreased job satisfaction and commitment, which, in turn, was associated with a higher level of turnover intentions. Originality/value The findings broaden our understanding of how individuals respond to deviance at the workplace, by simultaneously considering the effects of organizational structure (vertical vs horizontal) and deviant status (upward vs downward directions of deviance).
