Vietnam contains diverse marine ecosystems with the high biodiversity of marine organisms, including gorgonian corals of Alcyonacea order. In order to support traditional classification of these corals, in this study mitochondrial barcoding markers msh1 and nuclear 28S rDNA were developed for analysis of 11 specimens collected in 2015 and 2016 from different islands and bays along the North Central coast of Vietnam. Phylogenetic analyses based on msh1 and 28S sequence polymorphism showed that all specimens belonged to Anthozoa class, Octocorallia sub-class and Alcyonacea order. At lower taxa levels, they were divided into 4 sub-orders, 7 families and 7 genera according to 7 distinct clades with bootstrap values from 99-100%.The identifications of 7 out of 11 specimens including Sinularia brassica (2 specimens)and Sinularialeptoclados, Dichotellagemmacea, Annella reticulata, S. conferta and S. nanolobata were in concordance between morphological and molecular methods. The other 4 specimens were only identified at genus levels of Astrogorgia sp., Melithaea sp. Scleronephthya sp. and Muricella sp. by either msh1-morphology or msh1-28S markers. These results highlight the importance of molecular markers to elucidate patterns of biodiversity and species identification of soft coral.

Rock Voles (Microtus chrotorrhinus) were previously documented only from the southern coast of Labrador and the Strait of Belle Isle south of Hamilton Inlet. During two field seasons in 2000 and 2001, both in July, six Rock Vole specimens were collected on Southern Island, off the north-central coast of Labrador, extending the range of the subspecies Microtus chrotorrhinus ravus approximately 250 km to the central Labrador coast north of Hamilton Inlet. Rock Voles were trapped primarily in stunted Black Spruce (Picea mariana) forest and areas associated with rocks, thick brush, and water.

Regional prevalence of soybean Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR), caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, was modeled using management practices (tillage, herbicide, manure and fertilizer application, and seed treatment with fungicide) and summer weather variables (mean monthly air temperature and precipitation for the months of June, July, August, and September) as inputs. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the probability of stem rot prevalence with disease data from four states in the north-central region of the United States (Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Ohio). Goodness-of-fit criteria indicated that the resulting model explained well the observed frequency of occurrence. The relationship of management practices and weather variables with soybean yield was examined using multiple linear regression (R 2 = 0.27). Variables significant to SSR prevalence, including average air temperature during July and August, precipitation during July, tillage, seed treatment, liquid manure, fertilizer, and herbicide applications, were also associated with high attainable yield. The results suggested that SSR occurrence in the north-central region of the United States was associated with environments of high potential yield. Farmers' decisions about SSR management, when the effect of management practices on disease prevalence and expected attainable yield was taken into account, were examined. Bayesian decision procedures were used to combine information from our model (prediction) with farmers' subjective estimation of SSR incidence (personal estimate, based on farmers' previous experience with SSR incidence). MAXIMIN and MAXIMAX criteria were used to incorporate farmers' site-specific past experience with SSR incidence, and optimum actions were derived using the criterion of profit maximization. Our results suggest that management practices should be applied to increase attainable yield despite their association with high disease risk.

Climate change is driving dangerous and more unpredictable weather. It has broken historical records of hydro-meteorological observations, consequently leading challenges in operational forecasting. In order to improve crop yield and reduce impacts of climate change on agricultural production, it is necessary to obtain sources of weather information. The estimations of rainfall and PET can enable us to identify plant growth and water supply capacity for any plant in the mountainous areas at Quy Hop District, Nghe An (one part of the North Central Coast) on a monthly basis. The updated information on weather forecasting technology and the application of modern technology responding to climate change in Quy Hop provided results related to cumulative rainfall chart. It can forecast accurately the plant growth and the best time for watering plants and plays an important role in the agricultural production.

The Southeast Pacific is characterized by rich upwelling systems that have sustained and been impacted by human groups for at least 12 ka. Recent fishing and aquaculture practices have put a strain on productive coastal ecosystems from Tongoy Bay, in north-central Chile. We use a temporal baseline to determine whether potential changes to community structure and composition over time are due to anthropogenic factors, natural climatic variations or both. We compiled a database ( n  = 33 194) with mollusc species abundances from the Mid-Pleistocene, Late Pleistocene, Holocene, dead shell assemblages and live-sampled communities. Species richness was not significantly different, neither were diversity and evenness indices nor rank abundance distributions. There is, however, an increase in relative abundance for the cultured scallop Argopecten , while the previously dominant clam Mulinia is locally very rare. Results suggest that impacts from both natural and anthropogenic stressors need to be better understood if benthic resources are to be preserved. These findings provide the first Pleistocene temporal baseline for the south Pacific that shows that this highly productive system has had the ability to recover from past alterations, suggesting that if monitoring and management practices continue to be implemented, moderately exploited communities from today have hopes for recovery.
