Gonad development in fish is generally assumed to be negatively influenced by interspecific hybridization, resulting in sterility or sub-sterility. However, this is not the case in sturgeons (Acipenseridae), in which fertile hybrids are common. In the present study, we investigated gonad development in several sturgeon interspecific hybrids and purebred species. Six interspecific hybrid groups and three purebred groups were analyzed including 20 hybrid specimens with even ploidy, 40 specimens having odd ploidy levels, and 30 purebred specimens. Hybrids of species with the same ploidy (even ploidy – 2n, 4n) exhibited normally developed gonads similar to those seen in purebred specimens. In contrast, hybrids of species differing in ploidy (odd ploidy – 3n) did not display fully developed gonads. Ovaries were composed of oocytes or nests of differentiating oocytes that ceased development in early stages of meiosis (pachytene to zygotene) with a higher content of adipose and apoptotic tissue. Testes contained single spermatogonia along with Sertoli cells and spaces lacking germ cells. The obtained results showed that gonad development was influenced by genetic origin and ploidy of the sturgeon hybrids and were consistent with full fertility of hybrids with even ploidy. Sterility of females, but possibly limited fertility of males, is suggested for hybrids with odd ploidy.

Berries of grapevine (Vitis spp.) have a limited window of susceptibility to Uncinula necator, the causal agent of grapevine powdery mildew, until the onset of ontogenic resistance approximately 2 to 3 weeks postbloom. This phenomenon has been demonstrated in several cultivars of V. vinifera and in V. labruscana ‘Concord’, which all exhibited a similar duration of susceptibility. To identify genetic variation for ontogenic resistance, we screened a diverse collection of Vitis species and interspecific hybrids maintained in the USDA-ARS cold-hardy Vitis germplasm collection in Geneva, NY. Of the 79 genotypes whose fruit clusters were screened for susceptibility to powdery mildew under field conditions, 50 exhibited a high level of constitutive resistance to powdery mildew and did not develop more than trace levels of disease when inoculated, irrespective of the stage of berry development at inoculation. Twenty-four genotypes exhibited a significant gain of resistance as berries aged. This ontogenic resistance was conserved across four species and several interspecific hybrids of Vitis spp., although the timing of the onset of ontogenic resistance varied by genotype. The mechanism of ontogenic resistance was examined for four genotypes. Similar to previous studies, ontogenic resistance greatly reduced the incidence of successful penetration. Despite the broad conservation of ontogenic resistance across species, one genotype (V. rupestris ‘R-65-44’) remained susceptible past the onset of ripening, over 1 month later than reported previously for V. vinifera and V. labruscana. Variation in the resistance phenotype was observed among the rachis, pedicels, and berries within clusters of the majority of genotypes studied. The genetic variation in ontogenic resistance, in particular the discovery of a genotype in which berries remain susceptible as they mature, will facilitate further study of the inheritance and molecular basis of ontogenic resistance.

A genetic study of seven cultivars of H. psittacorum and Heliconia interspecific hybrids was carried out. The heritability estimate and genetic variation coefficient were highest for stem diameter (SD) (99.32% and 56.90%, respectively) and for CVg/CVe (1.85), indicating a favorable situation for selection. The genetic correlations of SD with days to inflorescence emergence (DIE) (0.64), period from shoot emergence to stem cut (CYCLE) (0.63) and stem weight (SW) (0.96) showed that the time from inflorescence emergence to cut is longer and the stem weight is greater for genotypes with larger stem diameter. Inflorescence length (IL), SD and DIE were the most important traits, accounting for 99.55% of the total variation. For SD and IL, the repeatability values exceeded 0.60 and for SD, SW, DIE and IL the coefficients of determination exceeded 93%.

The objects of research are Beluga (Huso huso, Linnaeus), sturgeon spike (Acipenser nudiventris, Lovetsky) and their interspecific hybrids of artificial generation grown on the Research and Experimental Base BIOS (the Astrakhan region) by using the basin method. To assess the physiological status of fish, a set of morphophysiological indicators (absolute and relative weight of gills, heart, liver, and gonads) were used. The dynamics of the indices of the corresponding viscera of Beluga and sturgeon spike and their interspecific hybrids in the second year of cultivation was studied. The necessity for the research is explained by the fact that most work performed was carried out on land vertebrates and on fish of natural generation. There have been presented the average values of morphophysiological indices for each of the four groups of unmixed sturgeon species and their hybrids. The obtained values of the studied parameters of sturgeon species can be used for further monitoring of the fish growing conditions using the basin method.

Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was conducted on the wabisuke camellia and its relative camellia species. Genetic polymorphism was identified among the ‘Uraku’ camellia, its offspring ‘Tosa-uraku’ and Camellia japonica, whereas the two accessions of the old ‘Uraku’ showed monomorphism in all the fragments. The results suggested that the two old ‘Uraku’ trees are asexually-propagated clonal strains. The genetic distance between wabisuke cultivars and Chinese camellias and between wabisuke camellias and C. sinensis was much further than that between wabisuke cultivars and Camellia japonica. It has also been suggested that wabisuke camellias can be classified into two subgroups, I-1 and I-2, and that Subgroup I-2 originated from C. japonica, while Subgroup I-1, including ‘Uraku’ (synonym: ‘Tarokaja’), was developed by the repeated hybridization of C. japonica to interspecific hybrids with the Chinese camellias, e.g., C. pitardii var. pitardii, or by the involvement of related species not investigated in this study.
