Water is an indispensable natural resource vital for the survival of all life forms. It contributes significantly to the country's economic prosperity and general well-being. As a result, understanding the status of water bodies is crucial to assure their long-term use. A study on water quality parameters and aquatic insect community was therefore carried on the surface waters of Dalvoy Lake which is spread over an area of 133.43 acres and having a length of 2.2 km. Monthly water samples were collected using one-litre labeled plastic containers from three locations between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Water quality analysis was conducted following standard methods and compared to drinking water specifications. The dissolved oxygen content, total hardness, conductivity, total dissolved solids, and turbidity exceeded the permissible limits. Aquatic insects were collected from the same locations and preserved in 4% formalin. A total of 15 species of aquatic insects belonging to four orders, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, and Ephemeroptera, were identified in this study. The Hemiptera was shown to be the largest group comprising of 8 species; 4 species of Diptera; 2 species of Coleoptera and a lone species of Ephemeroptera. The computation of aquatic insect dominance status using Engelmann's Scale revealed Diplonychus rusticus, Anisops sp., Enithares sp., Chironomous sp. and Culex sp. as dominant. Biodiversity metrics like the Shannon Index (1.4-2.11) and the evenness index (0.50-0.66) reflect the agitation of the system. Based on the results of the water quality index (163.67) and aquatic insect assemblage, it is evident that the water in Dalvoy Lake is deteriorated and is unfit for domestic usage. The study also indicated the abundance of two genera Chironomous and Culex of the Diptera order which are the index of water pollution. Thus, the present study calls for urgent and strict vigilance and continuous monitoring of this perennial water body for conservation and sustainable management.

The species composition and abundance of caddisflies in association with some water quality parameters (pH, water temperature and conductivity) in Opa Stream in Ile-Ife, Nigeria were investigated during October 2009–August 2010. One hundred and ninety adult caddisflies collected from the stream represent six species in six genera and three families. Hydropsychidae had three species, which is more than were found in other families. The caddisflies showed a relative mean abundance of 62% and 38.9% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Caddisfly abundance was positively correlated with pH and conductivity but there was a negative relationship between water temperature and the abundance of caddisflies in the stream.

Abundant as it may seem in Nigeria, access to clean and potable water is a great challenge. Hence the reason for determination of the physico-chemical properties of the groundwater in Agbowo community in Ibadan, Oyo state Southwestern Nigeria for domestic uses. Water samples collected from thirty-four (34) shallow wells with varying depths were subjected to chemical analysis. The water quality parameters were analyzed in accordance to standard methods. The groundwater analysis reviewed includes pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), others include Ca<sup>2+</sup>, Mg<sup>2+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup> Na<sup>+</sup>, Fe<sup>2+</sup>, NO<sub>3</sub>, Cl<sup>-</sup> SO<sub>4</sub><sup>2-</sup> and HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>- </sup>The results indicated that the parameters analyzed have some falling within the limits and some above the maximum permissible limits in accordance to Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water. In general, the data revealed that maxima and minima concentrations of the priority physico-chemical water quality parameters examined in the thirty-four (34) water points were mostly within the Target Water Quality Range (TWQR) for domestic use with little exceptions at some points. However, high nitrate concentrations and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) above the permissible limits in some of the well water sampled are causes for serious concern. Poor construction, lack of maintenance, proximity to sewage tank and stream, as well as indiscriminate dumping of refuse are suggested as the major causes of this development. The overall implication of this observation call for sustenance and improved water resource management strategy for the area in order to prevent the deterioration of the water sources quality, which may pose associated health risks and environmental hazards.

A s tudy was conducted to investigate the aquatic insect communities in Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Sabah, Malaysia. Two sampling sites were selected: lakes at School of Science and Technology (SST), and another near College E (CE) (student accommodation). Each lake consisted of four sampling stations. Aquatic insects were sampled using dip net from November 2013 to January 2014. Four water quality parameters were measured at each station. Shannon-Weiner’s diversity index and biotic indices (BMWP) were used in this study. Student’s t-test was used for testing the significant difference of water quality parameters, Shannon-Weiner’s diversity index and BMWP between these lakes. Pearson’s correlation was used to investigate relationships between aquatic insect assemblage and water quality parameters. A total of 1987 individuals composed of five orders that representing eleven families were recorded in this study. Baetidae (56.67%) was the dominant family in UMS, where Diptera order had least abundant with only 0.4% of overall sample. Aquatic insect abundance were significantly higher (P<0.05) in CE Lake. Bray-Curtis Similarity index showed 53.75% similarity between these two lakes. Pearson’s correlation showed that aquatic insect abundance and richness had significant relationships with water temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity and pH (P<0.05 or 0.01), except for salinity with taxa richness. Based on Malaysia’s INWQS, water quality parameters of these two lakes were categorized as Class I, but with dissolved oxygen the CE and SST lakes were classified as Class IIA and III respectively. The BMWP index showed similar results as dissolved oxygen, where SST Lake (score=40) had poor water quality.

A study was conducted to evaluate the water quality parameters of pond water at Mymensingh Urban region. The water samples were collected from 30 ponds located at Mymensingh Urban Region during August to October 2010. The chemical analyses of water samples included pH, EC, Na, K, Ca, S, Mn and As were done by standard methods. The chemical properties in pond water were found pH 6.68 to 7.14, EC 227 to 700 ?Scm-1, Na 15.57 to 36.00 ppm, K 3.83 to 16.16 ppm, Ca 2.01 to 7.29 ppm, S 1.61 to 4.67 ppm, Mn 0.33 to 0.684 ppm and As 0.0011 to 0.0059 ppm. The pH values of water samples revealed that water samples were acidic to slightly alkaline in nature. The EC value revealed that water samples were medium salinity except one sample and also good for irrigation. According to drinking water standard Mn toxicity was detected in pond water. Considering Na, Ca and S ions pond water was safe for irrigation and aquaculture. In case of K ion, all the samples were suitable for irrigation but unsuitable for aquaculture.J. Environ. Monitoring of environmental factors allows the achievement of some important objectives regarding water quality, forecasting, warning and intervention. The aim of this paper is to investigate water quality parameters in some potential pollutant sources from northern, southern and east-southern areas of Romania. Surface water quality data for some selected chemical parameters were collected and analyzed at different points from March to May 2017.
