Purpose: This paper proposes a new model for further research on how to select criteria in supplier selection, through a literature review and analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of previously used methods.Design/methodology/approach: The methods used to select criteria in supplier selection were extracted from various online academic databases.  The weaknesses and advantages of these methods were then analyzed. Based on these findings, several opportunities for improvement are proposed for further research. Finally, criteria design methods for the selection of suppliers are proposed using statistical multi-criteria decision making (S-MCDM) methods.Findings: Direction and guidance for subsequent research to select the criteria used in supplier selection, based on the advantages and disadvantages of the decision methods used.Research limitations/implications: Limitations of this study are that it is focused on the methods of criteria design in supplier selection.Practical implications: This study can provide a research direction on the selection of criteria for supplier selection.Social implications: This study provides ongoing guidance and avenues for further research.Originality/value: New ideas for working out the developmental strategy for criteria selection are provided by statistical MCDM methods in supplier selection.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a multi-criteria supplier selection model using fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) approach for a leading automobile company in India. Design/methodology/approach – FAHP approach followed by a sensitivity analysis has been used. Findings – In this study, a FAHP-based supplier selection model is proposed to provide useful insights in choosing appropriate suppliers in dynamic situations in order to enhance long-term relationship with them. Practical implications – This study proposes a supplier selection model for an automobile industry which often faces heterogeneous supply environments. This model may have a high acceptability where a large number of suppliers are available to supply the materials or provide the services. As analytic hierarchy process is the most widely used methodology for supplier selection, however, it becomes less efficient in case of inconsistencies observed in the data. However a FAHP-based approach may overcome this difficulty. Originality/value – It contributes to supplier selection process and points out the importance of supplier selection problem, especially in the context of multi-criteria decision-making in Indian scenario.

Supplier selection is not an easy process as it typically involves multiple criteria and it requires human judgment. Therefore, there is a need to have a better system for supplier selection due to uncertainty and vagueness that exist in dealing with the multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. This study is aimed to identify the important criteria for the selection of the best pharmaceutical raw materials supplier for XYZ Pharmaceutical Manufacturing company by using Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy VIKOR approaches. Furthermore, this paper also presents the comparison results between the two methods in determining the best supplier. Fuzzy theory was used since it provides a right tool to encounter the uncertainties and complexity of decision making environment. This study investigated eight alternative suppliers based on seven criteria evaluated by two decision makers from the company. This study has successfully identified the top three most important criteria for the selection of supplier, namely, Regulatory Compliance, Price, and Product Variety. This study highlighted that Regulatory Compliance is a new important criterion for the pharmaceutical company to consider in future supplier selection. Based on the alternative results of Fuzzy AHP, it was found that the top three most important supplier were A5, A3 and A1. While based on the alternative results of Fuzzy VIKOR, it showed that the top three most important supplier were A5, A3 and A7. The comparison results between the two methods have shown that the Fuzzy VIKOR method is more suited to the problem of supplier selection.

In manufacturing industry selection of right supplier (s) is one of the challenging activities. Supplier selection is the method of determining the appropriate suppliers to provide the right quality of products, at the right quantities, at the right price in the right time. During the last ten years based on the changes in the business sector, Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) has been one of the fastest growing areas. By choosing the best supplier, the companies can increase their productivity and also competitive advantage. In the earlier period, several methods have been proposed to solve the supplier selection problem, such as the linear weighting methods, the analytic network process, total cost approaches and mathematical programming techniques. Although the linear programming methods are simple, they are not accurate and more variations exist. So the latest multi-criteria decision making tools such as Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) are deeply studied. While selecting the best supplier, many criteria are involved. The criteria may be different for different approach. The decision makers always express their preferences on alternatives or on the attributes of supplier which can be used to help rank the supplier and choose the enviable one. In this article, application of fuzzy logic and AHP are discussed with case-studies and also presented the discussion about implementation of ANN for supplier selection.

In the past few decades, there has been lot of focus on the issue of sustainability. This has occurred due to the growing concerns related to climate change and the growing awareness about environmental concerns. Also, the competition at global level has led to the search for the most sustainable route in the industries. The current research work deals with the selection of green supplier in a Nickle coating industry based on certain weighted green attributes. For this purpose, a hybrid tool comprising of Fuzzy AHP (Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy) and VIKOR (VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) is used. The Fuzzy AHP is used for assigning proper weights to the selected criteria for supplier evaluation, while VIKOR is used for final supplier selection based on the weighted criteria. The three criterions for green supplier selection are, Ecological packaging, Corporate socio-environmental responsibility and Staff Training. The outcome of the integrated model may serve as a steppingstone to other SMEs in different sectors for selecting the most suitable supplier for addressing the sustainability issue.
