This outlook paper reviews the research of van der Laan’s group on Targeted Learning, a subfield of statistics that is concerned with the construction of data adaptive estimators of user-supplied target parameters of the probability distribution of the data and corresponding confidence intervals, aiming at only relying on realistic statistical assumptions. Targeted Learning fully utilizes the state of the art in machine learning tools, while still preserving the important identity of statistics as a field that is concerned with both accurate estimation of the true target parameter value and assessment of uncertainty in order to make sound statistical conclusions. We also provide a philosophical historical perspective on Targeted Learning, also relating it to the new developments in Big Data. We conclude with some remarks explaining the immediate relevance of Targeted Learning to the current Big Data movement.

Abstract Classical property law is not only losing economic relevance with the progressing dephysicalization of economic processes but is also increasingly perceived as a static field of private law, pursued by specialized lawyers working with rather inaccessible national concepts and dogmas that seem to have no significant relevance for the development of a digital economy. The mostly codification-driven comparative research on property law continues in the tradition of national property law codifications primarily addressing tangible objects. The research on property law should not restrict itself to this rather pragmatic approach, because in the end this arbitrarily delimits the concept of property law and reinforces the impression of classical property law only dealing with tangibles. Comparative property law should look beyond issues of codification and address the question of what is the essence of property law. Property law deals with the erga omnes effects of rights. It therefore not only addresses full-fledged property rights over movables or immovables but also covers partially absolute rights over these assets on the threshold to contract law. Property law also addresses absolute rights with regard to intangibles. This awareness should on one hand demand from any discussion on creating new (partially) absolute property rights to take notice of the state of the art of current (comparative) property law. It should on the other hand incite classical property lawyers to take part in these debates and to question the traditional concepts and principles in light of the new developments. Classical institutions of property law should be reconsidered from this point of view.

Porous materials with well-defined pore shapes, sizes and distributions are highly desired in many emerging applications, particularly for biomedical materials and devices. However, conventional methods for processing porous materials only demonstrated limited capability in morphological control. One promising solution is the porogen templating process, where a structured porogen pattern is created first and subsequently used as a template or mold for generation of the desired porous material. Particularly, with solid freeform fabrication, porogen templates having complex internal structures can be additively fabricated, and they can then be used as molds for molding of porous materials and devices. This article attempts to offer a constructive overview on the state of the art of porogen patterning and inverse molding, with the goal of explaining the working mechanisms and providing unbiased accounts of the pros and cons of existing techniques and process variants. The article further intends to provide a fundamental understanding of the constituent elements and corresponding building blocks in porogen templating processes. An increased understanding of these elements will facilitate the development of more capable new processes.

This section of the issue of Geophysics is draw from a collection of papers originally submitted for a monograph on engineering and groundwater geophysics. It is a mixture of tutorial, new developments, and case histories focused on seismic methods. This introduction will review the evolution of this section and introduce each of the papers. These papers complement the overview presented by Dobecki and Romig (1985) in the Golden Anniversary Issue of Geophysics. That paper reviews the history, summarizes the state of the art, and attempts to predict possible future developments.
