An original poling method using purely optical means and based on a dual-frequency interference process is presented. We show that the coherent superposition of two beams at fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies results in a polar field with an irreducible rotational spectrum containing both a vector and an octupolar component. This enables the method to be applied even to molecules without a permanent dipole such as octupolar molecules. After a theoretical analysis of the process, we describe different experiments aiming at light-induced noncentrosymmetry performed respectively on one-dimensional Disperse Red 1 and octupolar Ethyl Violet molecules. Macroscopic octupolar patterning of the induced order is demonstrated in both transient and permanent regimes. Experimental results show good agreement with theory.

Three transformation approaches for generating grid multiscroll chaotic attractors are presented through theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Three kinds of grid multiscroll chaotic attractors are generated based on one-dimensional multiscroll Chua system. The dynamics of the multiscroll chaotic attractors are analyzed by means of equilibrium points, eigenvalues, the largest Lyapunov exponent and complexity. As the experimental verification, we implemented the circular grid multiscroll attractor on DSP platform. The simulation and experimental results are consistent well with that of theoretical analysis, and it shows that the design approaches are effective.

This paper deals with an ion drag pump consisting of a needle-mesh electrode system. The effects of the number of needles of the emitter, the configuration of the collector and the type of oil on the pump performance are investigated experimentally, and some of the experimental results are compared with one-dimensional theoretical analysis. It is shown that the pump performance is not significantly influenced by the number of needles on the emitter but is significantly enhanced by attaching needles to the collector mesh in a similar manner to the emitter, and that the type of oil has a significant influence on the pressure-flowrate characteristic. Furthermore, it is revealed that no correlation can be seen between the stalled characteristic and the flow characteristic.

AbstractThis paper proposes a new framework for categorizing approaches to the history of political thought. Previous categorizations exclude much research; political theory, if included, is often caricatured. And previous categorizations are one-dimensional, presenting different approaches as alternatives. My framework is two-dimensional, distinguishing six kinds of end (two empirical, four theoretical) and six kinds of means. Importantly, these choices are not alternatives: studies may have more than one end and typically use several means. Studies with different ends often use some of the same means. And all studies straddle the supposed empirical/theoretical “divide.” Quentin Skinner himself expertly combines empirical and theoretical analysis—yet the latter is often overlooked, not least because of Skinner's own methodological pronouncements. This highlights a curious disjuncture in methodological writings, between what they say we do, and what we should do. What we should do is much broader than existing categorizations imply.

Abstract In continuation of the work on interaction between shock waves and magnetic fields 1,2 the experiments reported here measured the atomic and electron densities in the interaction region by means of an interferometric and a spectroscopic method. The transient atomic density was also calculated using a one-dimensional theory based on the work of Johnson3 , but modified to give an improved physical model. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical predictions.

A novel rain gauge based on acoustic self-calibration principle is proposed in the paper. Acoustic self-calibration principle can eliminate the uncertainty of the velocity of ultrasound and achieve accurate measurement of rainfall. The rain gauge not only overcomes the influence on the rainfall measurement under intensive rainfall conditions, but also improves the precision of rain gauge. Plenty of experiments have been done to validate the design. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show the effectiveness of the rain gauge. A full description of the rain gauge and implementation are presented.

Abstract We re-examined the effects of wavelength error and spectral band width on the measurement of alkaline phosphatase activity. The methods we studied is relatively insensitive to these two factors, a conclusion we base on both experimental results and theoretical analysis. These findings are in conflict with a recently published report [Lott et al., Clin. Chem. 24, 938 (1978)], and we suggest a possible explanation for this.
