This paper presents a general analysis of the effects of monopolistic third-degree price discrimination on welfare and output when all markets are served. Sufficient conditions—involving straightforward comparisons of the curvatures of the direct and inverse demand functions in the different markets—are presented for discrimination to have negative or positive effects on social welfare and output. We analyze the global stability of the equilibria in Bertrand and Cournot duopolies. Assuming a set of sufficient conditions for the global stability of the Bertrand duopoly equilibrium, we derive additional conditions which are sufficient for the global stability of the Cournot duopoly equilibrium. We use the relationships among the first and second order partial derivatives of the ordinary and inverse demand functions in deriving our results.

The purpose of this chapter is to understand the structure of rural poverty in China. On the basis of CHIP data for 1988, 1995, 2002, 2007, and 2013, the authors analyze poverty trends and the structure of poverty, comparing the recent period to earlier periods. Factors that raise household income, factors that reduce the need for household expenditures, and other factors related to China’s poverty alleviation goals are considered. The analysis finds that although the absolute poverty rate continued to decline, the poverty gap and relative poverty increased after 2007. An analysis of the reasons for poverty reveals some positive effects of the rural social welfare policies; however, health problems among the elderly, among children below the age of 15, and among disabled adults continued to be a key source of poverty.

The problem of post-buckling behavior of composite cylindrical shells reinforced in the axial and circumferential directions and subject to axial loading is considered. The equations of equilibrium of an imperfect shell are formulated in terms of displacements. Then the sufficient conditions of imperfection in sensitivity for both static and dynamic buckling problems are formulated. This general analysis is applied to a particular case of axisymmetric buckling of ring-stiffened shells which appear to be practically imperfection-insensitive.

Equilibrium production, equilibrium price and equilibrium total revenue in the case of implementing third-degree price discrimination and unified pricing were analyzed under the condition of two oligopoly firms with 2 sub markets by complete information static game method, and the relationship between the three indexes of the two cases were studied. The results showed that, under the condition of linear demand functions of the two sub markets, the equilibrium output of unified pricing was equal to the equilibrium output of discriminative pricing; the equilibrium price of unified pricing was weighted average of the equilibrium prices of two sub markets while discriminative pricing; the equilibrium total revenue of unified pricing was less than the equilibrium total revenue of discriminative pricing.
