Accomplishment of green building design requirements and the achievement of the targeted credit points under a specific green rating system are known to be a task that is very challenging. Building Information Modeling (BIM) design process and tools have already made considerable advancements in green building design and performance analysis. However, Green building design process is still lack of tools and workflows that can provide real-time feedback of building sustainability and rating during the design stage. In this paper, a new workflow of green building design assessment and rating is proposed based on the integration of Visual Programing Language (VPL) and BIM. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop a BIM-VPL based tool for building envelope design and assessment support. The focus performance metric in this research is building Envelope Thermal Transfer Value (ETTV) which is an Energy Efficiency (EE) prerequisite requirement (up to 15 credits) in both Green Mark and GreenRE rating systems. The development of the tool begins first by creating a generic integration framework between BIM-VPL functionalities and ETTV requirements. Then, data is extracted from the BIM 3D model and managed using Revit, Excel and Dynamo for visual scripting. A sample project consisting of a hypothetical residential building is run and its envelope ETTV performance and rating score are obtained for the validation of the tool. This tool will support project team in building envelope design and assessment by allowing them to select the most appropriate façade configuration according to its performance efficiency and the green rating. Furthermore, this tool serves as proof of concept that building sustainability rating and compliance checking can be automatically processed through customized workflows developed based on BIM and VPL technologies.

Bamboo is known as a sustainable alternative for green building design, and it has been tied culturally to some regions around the world. However, bamboo’s structural strength for different design scenarios needs more investigation before it is widely adopted. Timber and bamboo have similar mechanical properties, but the latter is a repaid, renewable, sustainable, disaster-resilient system and is versatile, which has more advantages for construction purposes. Natural bamboo and its derivatives have been considered as a high-demand green and environmentally responsible alternative construction material, and this interest is increasing globally. Because of the rapid growth rate and large developing area, it is more useable than the limited timber resource. However, natural bamboo has an anisotropic and nonhomogeneous material property, which varies in multiple directions. There is limited engineering data and investigation of bamboo material and its use in and impact on construction. In this study, three different bamboo models were analyzed by Strand7; each of them had different features in structure and in the major construction material. A new model was proposed by improving the three given structures and was maximized in the mechanical capacity. Some design guidelines were proposed based on the analysis and comparison of different bamboo structures. The model will replace natural bamboo with bamboo scrimber, which is an engineered bamboo derivative that has more uniform material properties.

There are six basic control items, land saving, energy saving, water saving, material saving, indoor environment and operation, among which, only material saving are related to structure design. We followed the green building design concept and the control items list in those standards during structure design of one of the residential area in Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city, which consist of 15~18-story residential building connected to a large underground garage, as is shown below.
