Background: Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to reorganise and change in response to experience or after brain damage. Neuroplasticity is an imperative component of recovery from stroke, and rehabilitation aims to capitalise on this during a patient's recovery. Aims: To highlight the role of neuroplasticity in stroke recovery and to explore how stroke nursing can use it. Methods: The paper is a narrative review of the literature on neuroplasticity and role of nursing in stroke recovery. Findings: Nurses can play a pivotal role in ensuring optimum conditions for neuroplasticity through a variety of means. These include the encouragement of repetition, integration of repetition into everyday tasks, creating a stimulating environment, educating stroke patients as well as their carers about the recovery process and working as part of multidisciplinary team. Conclusions: This paper highlights the important role stroke nursing can play in enhancing neuroplasticity during stroke recovery.

Eine Übersicht der bestehenden Literatur weist auf Unsicherheiten bezüglich der spezifischen Rolle der Pflegenden in der Rehabilitation von Hirnschlagpatientinnen und -patienten hin. Es existieren zwei unterschiedliche Begrifflichkeiten für die Rolle der Pflegenden, keine davon bezieht sich auf spezifische Rehabilitationsziele oder Patientenergebnisse. Ein anfänglicher theoretischer Beitrag der Rolle der Pflege in der Genesung vom Hirnschlag wird als Struktur unterbreitet, um die therapeutischen Aspekte der Pflege im Koordinieren, Erhalten und Üben zu vereinen. Bestehende Literatur untermauert diesen Beitrag. Weitere Forschung ist jedoch notwendig, um den spezifischen Inhalt und Fokus der Pflege in der Genesung bei Hirnschlag zu entwickeln.

Beta oscillations are associated with motor function and are thought to play a role in movement impairment. In a recent magnetoencephalography (MEG) study, Rossiter et al. ( J Neurophysiol 112: 2053–2058, 2014) found a disruption in the modulation of movement-related beta oscillations in stroke patients that correlated with motor impairment. We discuss how beta oscillatory measures characterize motor impairment, the implications of stroke variability, and the potential role of GABA in modulating oscillations following stroke and during stroke recovery.

Every second a person in the world suffers from a stroke, not surprising, therefore, that stroke is the leading cause of death and morbidity in Portugal. Increasingly, acute stroke is considered a medical emergency. The evidence proves that the treatment of these patients in specialized units (stroke units) is effective in acute stroke. A stroke unit is a hospital area where professionals with specific, well-defined training work, who provide care to stroke patients who are already stabilized, but are still in an acute phase(DGS, 2001). The aim of this study is to understand the role of the occupational therapist in stroke units and to identify the perspective of the multidisciplinary team on their work, clarifying what are the advantages of this professional in the team. The study falls within the qualitative paradigm, exploratory and descriptive. Semi-structured interviews were performed to 39 health professionals. The technique used was the content analysis of interviews. Based on previously established categories, other categories emerged.

Laccases are versatile multi-copper enzymes belonging to the superfamily of oxidase enzymes, which have been known since the nineteenth century. Recent discoveries have refined investigators' views of the potential of laccase as a magic tool for remarkable biotechnological purposes. A literature review of the capabilities of laccases, their assorted substrates, and their molecular mechanism of action now indicates the emergence of a new direction for laccase application as part of an arsenal in the fight against the contamination of water supplies by a number of frequently prescribed medications. This chapter provides a critical review of the literature and reveals the pivotal role of laccases in the elimination and detoxification of pharmaceutical contaminants in aquatic environments and wastewaters.
