The interface between the reinforcement and the matrix has a significant role in enhancing the property of the composite. In this work to increase the wetting ability of the reinforcement, nickel coating is done over the carbon fiber. The process of coating is carried out through three stages. It involves sensitization time, activation time and metallization time. Using the optimized time interval of the above process coating is done, on the fiber of range 0.6 to 1 micrometer. This coated fiber has the good cohesive property within each other, which increases the wettability. Stir casting process is carried out with the stirring speed of 200 rpm and the melting temperature about 780-8000C is used for the manufacturing of the composite. The results of this study revealed that, as the short coated carbon content was increased, there were significant increases in the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS). Furthermore, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used in order to coordinate relationships between quality of the carbon fiber and aluminium alloy bond and thereby link with tensile properties of the metal matrix composites. The metal matrix composites are a very important role in the industries such as aerospace, automobile and sports equipment etc. The aluminium material is considered to be a light weight metal, to enhance the property of the aluminium 7075 alloy, the short coated carbon fibers added to the aluminium as a reinforcement.

Magnesium metal matrix composites (MMCs) have been receiving attention in recent years as an attractive choice for aerospace and automotive applications because of their low density and superior specific properties. Using stir casting process, AZ91 magnesium alloy metal matrix composites have been produced with different weight percentages (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25) of silicon carbide particles (SiCp) addition. Microstructural characterization reveals uniform distribution of SiC particles with good interfacial bonding between the matrix and reinforcement. Electrical conductivity and Co-efficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) measurements carried out on these composites have yielded better properties. Improved mechanical properties such as hardness, ultimate tensile strength, and compressive strength are obtained. The microfracture mechanisms involved during tensile fracture is analyzed and correlated with the properties obtained.

Aluminum metal matrix with carbon fibre reinforcement composites are potential materials for automotive, aerospace and electronics industries. The interaction between Al matrix and carbon fibre reinforcement, plays vibrant role to decide the properties of the Metal Matrix Composites (MMC’s). However, interaction between Al alloy matrix and carbon fibre is forming an Aluminum Carbide (Al4C3) at higher temperature (>650°C). This consequence degrades the mechanical properties and promotes corrosion. To overcome corrosion problem and improve the composite properties, metallic coating on carbon rod is very vital. In the present study, aluminum metal matrix composites (Al6082/4%Al2O3+2%Gr) were developed with coated carbon fibre rod using stir casting process. Carbon fibre rods of 3 mm diameter is coated with nickel by electro less process and then copper coating done by electrolytic process. The bonding between matrix and reinforcement was observed in SEM and EDAX analysis. The results indicates the absent of Al4C3 formation.
