The Baong Formation is one of the formations that has hydrocarbon potential in the Aru Sub Basin, North Sumatra Basin (Figure 1). However, geological information in that area is still far less than is available in others. Analysis of sequence stratigraphy needs to be done to enrich geological information of the study area, maximize the results of exploration before exploitation, and make it easier to find the distribution of potential layers of oil and gas. Methods that are used in this research are electrofacies analysis to show the appearance of rock grain size and geological processes that affect its formation, Well Seismic Tie and interpretation of the horizon along with structures to produce a Time Structure Map, and correlate the sequences in log wells and 2D seismic cross section to know the same area of each sequence. Based on third-order sequence, the Baong Formation was divided into two types of system tract, such as Lowstand System Tract (LST) and Transgressive System Tract (TST). Maximum Flooding Surface (MFS) as the lower boundary of LST, Transgressive Surface (TS) as the boundary between LST and TST, and Maximum Flooding Surface as the upper boundary of TST. Based on fourth-order sequence, each of the system tracts was divided into seven parasequences with Flooding Surface as the boundary. The research area can also be interpreted into a conceptual model of a hydrocarbon system.

As a new kind of deposition system, the shallow-water delta deposit is accepted increasingly by exploration workers in Bohai oil field. In the oil-gas exploration process, more and more evidence about the existence of shallow-water delta was discovered, such as palaeophyte, mudstone characteristic, log response and so on. From the perspective of sequence stratigraphy, the author of this article analyze the causes of shallow-water delta and think that the water-depth change is the major factor that control the throughgoing of shallow-water deltaic sands body; And summarizes the unique characteristic of shallow-water delta which is different to the common delta deposit. Compared to the traditional fluvial sediments, the deposition system of shallow-water delta has better combination of reservoir and cap and superior condition of oil and gas accumulation, and provide more reliable safeguard to shallow layer oil-gas exploration, especially to lithologic reservoirs exploration.

Sequence stratigraphy is derived from seismic stratigraphy and has been widely used in sedimentary minerals, especially in oil and gas exploration. At present, the application and research of sequence stratigraphy can be roughly divided into three schools, namely, the sedimentary sequence stratigraphy of Vail, the genetic formation sequence of Galloway and the high-resolution sequence stratigraphy of Cross. They have common terms, but the concepts and ideas are different.

In Zhengxiangbaiqi, the Sanmianjing Formation of Middle Permian exposes most completely. The Lithology is mainly clastic rocks, in the lower part of the section, there are 60m gray middle-thick-bedded limestone. Based on detailed measurement of the Elitu Pasture Ⅱ, indoor research, identifications with microscope, paleontology and sequence stratigraphy studies, explored sedimtentary facies and sedimentary paleoenvironment of the Sanmianjing formation. The lower part and the upper part of Sanmianjing formation might be deposited in a shore setting with a high energy, and the middle part might be formed in an epicontinental sea with a relative low-energy. Fossils and sedimentary facies further enrich the biological face of the section, and prove new informations for contrasting between different stratigraphic and plaeoenvironment. This study proved principal geological data for further research on palaeogeography, oil and gas exploration.
