Due to the increase of developments that are moving and intensifying the health care field's transformation into a digital era, we feel it is appropriate to broaden our regular column, PDA Update, which previously focused on the implementation of personal digital assistants (PDAs) in pharmacy practice. We will now include viewpoints and recommendations on a broader array of information technology topics.

BACKGROUND Living in this digital era requires widespread adoption of information technology in modern health care industry. OBJECTIVE The aim of the current research was to study key attributes and behaviors related to successful leaders need to achieve vision and successful IT adoption. METHODS A Delphi technique with three rounds was held and guided by structured questions. Part of the study conducted online due to COVID-19 guidelines on distancing norms and lockdown in some areas. The answers of the participants were evaluated on the five- point Likert scale. A semi structured questions guided the conducted sessions with members of senior leaders and directors of health information technology departments across key hospitals three cities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from February 2020 to September 2020. RESULTS The findings showed that leadership qualities in health care sector resemble those required in other sectors. For digital innovations in rapidly changing healthcare space, leaders need to play more proactive role, be visionary, more dynamic, and lead by example to take the organization to the next level. Some digital leadership attributes required from today’s digital leaders expect them to be turnaround leaders, have strategic management capabilities, and outstanding interpersonal skills. CONCLUSIONS Leaders need to come out of their ivory towers, understand the fast-evolving scenario where the outstanding leadership qualities are essential to prove one’s mettle; outshine others; and create strong foundation for adoption of modern efficient customized digital technology in the fast growing health care sectors.

National legislation is in place to facilitate reform of the United States health care industry. The Health Care Information Technology and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) offers financial incentives to hospitals, physicians, and individual providers to establish an electronic health record that ultimately will link with the health information technology of other health care systems and providers. The information collected will facilitate patient safety, promote best practice, and track health trends such as smoking and childhood obesity.

 Cloud computing is the buzz word in today’s Information Technology. It can be used in various fields like banking, health care and education. Some of its major advantages that is pay-per-use and scaling, can be profitably implemented in development of Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP. There are various challenges in implementing an ERP on the cloud. In this paper, we discuss some of them like ERP software architecture by considering a case study of a manufacturing company.

Over the last few decades, the U.S. health care system has been the beneficiary of tremendous growth in the power and sheer quantity of useful medical technology. As a consequence, our society has, for some time, had to make cost-benefit tradeoffs in health care. The alternative—funding all health care interventions that would produce some health benefit for some patient—is not feasible, because it would effectively consume all of our resources.

Abstract Background The work of registered nurses in home health care is complicated and extensive, and information technology (IT) is used in everyday activities. Coordination between care and resource efficiency is important. There is a wealth of information that supports the notion of sustainable development, but what sustainable development means from the perspective of the registered nurse in home health care when using IT is limited. The term “sustainable development” is not clearly defined and is poorly researched in nursing. Sustainable development in this study includes the ecological, economic, social, technical and ethical dimensions. The aim of this study was to describe registered nurses’ experience of IT use in home health care through a sustainable development model. Methods This study was conducted using ten semi-structured lifeworld interviews with registered nurses. The method employed was a qualitative content analysis with a deductive approach. The deductive approach consisted of a model of sustainable development. Results Analysis of the interviews and the model of sustainable development provided categories: using IT from an ecological dimension, the registered nurses experienced reduced consumption and damage to the environment; using IT in the economical dimension, saving of time and resources was experienced; the use of IT affected social aspects such as the work environment and patient safety, and positive consequences, such as accessibility, were also mentioned; using IT from a technical dimension was characterized by the nurse’s attitude towards it – the registered nurses felt it improved the quality of care and gave users an overview of the organization; and from an ethical dimension, the registered nurses expressed the need for IT to be adaptable to the patient’s well-being and indicated that more awareness of risks in the care meeting may be needed. Conclusion The findings are discussed based on the synergies and conflicts that arise between the different dimensions of sustainable development. IT intertwines and overlaps with, and within, the environment, economy, society, technology and ethics. Registered nurses in home health care want to conduct good and safe care, while using IT could benefit patients.
