Starting from expressions in Connor et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 31, 1988, p. 577), we derive a one-dimensional tearing equation similar to the approximate equation obtained by Hegna & Callen (Phys. Plasmas, vol. 1, 1994, p. 2308) and Nishimura et al. (Phys. Plasmas, vol. 5, 1998, p. 4292), but for more realistic toroidal equilibria. The intention is to use this approximation to explore the role of steep profiles, bootstrap currents and strong shaping in the vicinity of a separatrix, on the stability of tearing modes which are resonant in the H-mode pedestal region of finite aspect ratio, shaped cross-section tokamaks, e.g. the Joint European Torus (JET). We discuss how this one-dimensional model for tearing modes, which assumes a single poloidal harmonic for the perturbed poloidal flux, compares with a model that includes poloidal coupling Fitzpatrick et al. (Nucl. Fusion, vol. 33, 1993, p. 1533).

The crashworthiness of ship side structures should be taken into consideration during the structural design phase. When a ship is struck by a head-on collision, the main participants of the side structures include outer plating, longitudinal girders, transverse frames and the stiffeners attached on them. This paper is centered on establishing an integrated deformation mechanism program by identifying the theoretical deformation modes of the side structures, including the plating and stiffeners. The primary failure models of plating structures are the crushing, stretching and tearing modes, and a new crushing model of side plating structures subject to an ellipsoid-shaped indenter is proposed. As for the stiffeners on outer plating, the smeared thickness method is often used, but the role of the stiffeners cannot be traced clearly during the deformation process and the structural performance predictive accuracy may not be guaranteed. Therefore, a theoretical model of stiffeners is established in this paper, on purpose of providing deep insight of the deformation mechanism with reasonable accuracy. The expressions of resistance force of the side structures are also derived based on a study of the progressive deformation process of numerical simulation results and the plastic analytical methods. The accuracy of the analytical method is verified by numerical simulations using code LS_DYNA. The proposed analytical method can be used for quick assessment of the performances of ship side structures during ship collision.

It is shown that, although the mathematical analysis of the Alfvén-wave equation does not show any variation at non-zero or zero singular points, the role of surface waves in the physical mechanism of resonant absorption of Alfvén waves is very different at these points. This difference becomes even greater when resistivity is taken into account. At the neutral point the zero-frequency surface waves that are symmetric surface modes of the structured neutral layer couple to the tearing mode instability of the layer. The importance of this study for the energy balance in tearing modes and the association of surface waves with driven magnetic reconnection is also pointed out.

AbstractWhitehouse adapts insights from evolutionary anthropology to interpret extreme self-sacrifice through the concept of identity fusion. The model neglects the role of normative systems in shaping behaviors, especially in relation to violent extremism. In peaceful groups, increasing fusion will actually decrease extremism. Groups collectively appraise threats and opportunities, actively debate action options, and rarely choose violence toward self or others.
