Sport performs several functions in society: an educational, a social, a cultural as well as a recreational function. Nevertheless, sport is also a business: in economic terms, it is a rapidly growing area accounting for 3% of world trade and is one of the sectors most likely to generate new employment in the near future (Colucci & Hendrickx, 2014). For that reason, at the present stage of sustainable development of sports in Europe in general and in Republic of Latvia in particular, there is a growing need for a clear regulation of the employment relations of professional athletes and transparency of taxation in the sports industry. Taking these considerations into accounts, aim of the research paper is to assess the theoretical and practical issues related to employment relationships and taxation in Latvian sports from the sustainable development perspective. The methodological basis of the research consists of general scientific and special legal research methods.

The target of this paper is to analyse the main elements of Air Transport sustainability, studying their evolution during the last years and establishing the future prevalent trends, which might be modified by the application of the adequate policies. Air Transport sustainability is considered as integrated by five basic characteristics: physical accessibility, economic affordability, safety, security and environmental impact. Each one of them has its own influence on the development of this transportation mode and all of them are required in order to achieve a sustainable development. After defining the structural elements of the five characteristics and the corresponding quantitative indicators, the paper studies the recent evolution of such indicators and extrapolates the most likely future trends, having taken into account the most relevant limitations presently existent or potentially appearing in the near future. The most important policies being presently studied (future aircraft designs, infrastructure developments, potential safety and security new rules and tentative environmental action programs) are evaluated, considering the potential repercussions on sustainability progress. Some combinations of them are suggested as the most efficient alternatives for preserving the sustainable development of XXI century air transport.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.2150

Abstract After a century of Irish independence, this study constructs long run Genuine Savings estimates, a leading economic indicator of sustainable development, to reassess Irish economic history from the vantage of sustainable development. The main difference uncovered surrounds the post-1950 period where Ireland failed to achieve economic convergence and was considered an economic failure in growth terms. From a sustainability perspective, Ireland may have been an overachiever during a “great transition” of sustainable development driven by improved institutions and policies. The findings show the value of the sustainable development perspective in shedding new light on a country’s development experience.

The philosophy of cultural tourism rests on the premise that an understanding of past cultural activities informs the way of life of the present people, which offers intriguing attractions that tourists want to witness and participate in. This understanding has propelled man to travel to various parts of the world from the time of the Roman Empire; to gain insights into other people’s cultures with the view to enhancing development. In Nigeria, the impacts of philosophy and cultural tourism on national development have not been well discussed in development studies. Thus, there is a need to address the following questions: Are there cultural activities that could act as pull factors for developing cultural tourism? Why would tourists want to come to Nigeria? How would such visit contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 in Nigeria? In expanding this knowledge, a documentary approach based on a review of the literature was adopted. The authors seek to examine the philosophy behind cultural tourism. The authors attempt to analyse the SDGs as they affect cultural exchange, quality living, awareness creation about responsible consumption, education and personal fulfilment. The findings will help to synthesize the logic behind the propelling forces to visit a destination to witness or participate in cultural activities. The paper argues that understanding the philosophy of cultural tourism will go a long way to ensuring sustainable development in Nigeria.
