In the present work, tenoxicam (H2Ten) reacted with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn (II) ions in the presence of 1.10-phenthroline (Phen), forming new mixed ligand metal complexes. The properties of the formed complexes were depicted by elemental analyses, infrared, electronic spectra, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), mass spectrometry, thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential thermogravimetric (DTG) analysis, molar conductance and magnetic moment. IR spectra demonstrated that H2Ten acted as a neutral bidentate ligand, coordinated to the metal ions via the pyridine-N and carbonyl group of the amide moiety, and Phen through the nitrogen atoms. Kinetic thermodynamics parameters activation energy (E*), enthalpy of activation (ΔH*), entropy of activation (ΔS*), Gibbs, free energy (ΔG*) associated to the complexes have been evaluated. Antibacterial screening of the compounds was carried out in vitro against Clavibacter michiganensis, Xanthomonas campestris and Bacillus megaterium. Antifungal activity was performed in vitro against Monilinia fructicola, Penicillium digitatum and Colletotrichum acutatum. The possible phytotoxic effect of the studied compounds was also investigated on Solanum lycopersicum (tomatoes) and Lepidium sativum (garden cress) seeds. The anticancer activity was screened against cell cultures of HCT-116 (human colorectal carcinoma), HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) and MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma).

A novel series of benzenesulfonyl derivatives of methyl α-D-glucopyranoside (1) were synthesized by reacting benzenesulfonyl chloride in pyridine followed by direct acylation method to yield 6-O-benzenesulfonyl derivative (2). In order to obtain newer products for antibacterial evaluation studies, the 6-O-benzenesulfonyl derivative was further transformed to a series of 2,3,4-tri-O-acyl derivatives (3-11) containing a wide variety of functionalities in a single molecular framework. All the synthesized compounds have been confirmed by IR,1H NMR and elemental analysis. These newly synthesized compounds were screened forin vitroantibacterial activity against some human pathogenic bacterial strains. The study revealed that the acylated products exhibit moderate to good antibacterial activities. It was interesting to observe that the selected compounds were more sensitive against Gram-Ve bacteria than that of the Gram-+Ve bacterial strains.

Sponge samples collected around Manado waters were obtained 30 species and their crude extracted have been tested in vitro for their activity in inhibiting bacterial growth. Based on the results of antibacterial screening in 30 sponge extracts, there were 23 sponge extracts which had bioactivity in inhibiting the growth of S. aureus, E. coli, S. saprophyticus and P. aeruginosa, Sponge extract No. 43 (of 30 sponge extracts tested) was the most active in inhibiting bacterial growth and had the widest inhibition zone diameter. Keywords: screening, sponge, crude extract, antibacterial, ManadoABSTRAKSampel spons dikoleksi di sekitar Perairan Manado sebanyak 30 jenis/spesies, dimana ekstrak kasarnya telah diuji secara in vitro aktivitasnya dalam menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri.
