A review of the literature on performing spinopelvic fixation for injuries and various pathologies of the spine and pelvis is presented. The review is analytical in nature and was carried out using databases of medical literature and search resources of PubMed and eLibrary. The following aspects are highlighted: the relevance and indications for performing spinopelvic fixation and its anatomical and biomechanical features. The historical aspects of the development of methods for performing spinopelvic fixation are considered and structured. The analysis of various methods of spinopelvic fixation (using hooks, screw insertion into the S2 sacral wings, L-shaped Luque rods, distractors, transiliac rods, Jackson, Harrington and Galveston techniques) was carried out.  The features of surgical techniques, their advantages, disadvantages and complications are considered.

The paper presents the second part of literature review devoted to modern techniques of spinopelvic fixation for various pathologies of the spine and injuries to the spine and pelvis. The review is non-systematic and was conducted using PubMed and eLibrary databases of medical literature. Modern techniques of spinopelvic fixation using screws installed in the ilium are highlighted, including anatomical and biomechanical features, clinical results of application, as well as the implementation of spinopelvic fixation for tumor lesions of the sacrum, including the use of customized implants and additive technologies. The features of classical installation of iliac screws and installation by the S2AIS technique are considered, and their advantages and disadvantages and possible complications are evaluated.

Proper treatment for the compromised diabetic foot often requires surgical correction and subtotal pedal amputation. This article discusses various levels of amputation of the human foot, including digital, ray, transmetatarsal, midfoot, and Syme amputations. Surgical techniques and biomechanical considerations are presented in order to assist the surgeon in planning for the most functional outcome of the patient. A review of the literature and the experiences of the authors are presented. (J Am Podiatr Med Assoc 91(1): 6-12, 2001)

Abstract Collagenous sprue is a severe malabsorptive disorder, histologically characterized by small intestinal villous and crypt atrophy, and a subepithelial collagen deposit, thicker than 12 µm, that entraps lamina propria cellular elements. Collagenous sprue is a rare disease entity, with only about 60 sporadic cases reported worldwide since it was first described in 1947. Its exact etiology is still under investigation, and its relationship with classic celiac disease and other refractory, spruelike intestinal disorders remains controversial. Two larger-scale studies, in 2009, brought new insights into this elusive, yet emerging, topic. Here, we present a review of the literature on the possible etiology of collagenous sprue, its proposed links to classic celiac disease and to refractory sprue, and its clinical, biochemical, histologic, and molecular features. To our knowledge, all case reports on collagenous sprue in the medical literature to date are summarized.

We report a new case of neuroendocrine carcinoma for which it was not possible to find the primary site until now. The recent medical literature about skin metastasis of neuroendocrine carcinoma (neuroendocrine tumor) is discussed.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify scientific evidence on the contribution of nurses' work to good practices in child care in the Brazilian literature. Method: integrative review of the literature, carried out in Latin American and Caribbean in Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Brazilian Nursing Database (BDENF), Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) database, from 2008 to 2018. Results: 14 complete studies were selected for interpretative analysis. Two categories allowed responding to the initial questioning of the study, namely: Nurses' contributions in child care; and Limits for the nurse's role in child care. Conclusion: evidences show the importance of nurses in child care for the promotion of comprehensive care for children and their families. However, there are socioeconomic, cultural, institutional and technical factors that hinder the nurses' performance in this setting.

Background Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor of the major and minor salivary glands. Sinonasal EMC is extremely uncommon and hitherto not described within the frontal or ethmoid sinuses. Objective To present a novel sinonasal subsite and review the literature regarding sinonasal EMC. Methods A case of frontoethmoidal EMC was presented. A medical literature data base was queried from January 1, 1950, to August 8, 2017, for all reports of sinonasal EMC. Results A 69-year-old man underwent combined open and endoscopic craniofacial resection of a right frontoethmoidal EMC, a previously undescribed primary location for this tumor. A comprehensive review of the literature revealed 13 additional cases of sinonasal EMC. Conclusion EMC is an uncommon neoplasm typically found in the major salivary glands; occurrence in the nose or paranasal sinuses is extremely rare. EMC often follows an indolent clinical course, although, in a minority of cases, particularly in large tumors with nuclear atypia, more aggressive behavior may be observed.

In this review, we aimed to give information about the historical development, basic features, and major indications of microendoscopy in vitreoretinal surgery. Microendoscopy permits vitreoretinal surgery for tissues that are not visible using operating microscopy ophthalmoscopy. Evolving technology may overcome the technical limitations of current endoscopic technology. Endoscopic vitreoretinal surgery is particularly useful when tissue details blurred by ocular media opacities or anterior chamber aberrations in contemporary surgical microscopic ophthalmoscopy. Microendoscopy is a robust platform for vitreoretinal surgery. Ophthalmic microendoscopy as a complementary method to modern vitreoretinal surgical techniques is very useful for safe surgery when an operating a microscope becomes insufficient.

Background: Occipitocervical fusion (OCF) using screws and rods offers immediate stability and an high fusion rates. However, multiple cranial fixation points are required in order to compensate for the poor bony purchase. Methods: The aim of this study was to compare the occipital condyle screw with the standard OCF techniques as well as to compare available techniques of the occipital condyle screw insertion. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive “Medline” and “Web of science” database search was performed. Cadaveric, radiographic and case studies were included. Results: The occipital condyle screw in comparison to the occipital plate enables an increased screw length, greater screw pullout strength, lower profile of the hardware and extended grafting surface. Both constructs have similar biomechanical properties (range of motion restriction, stiffness). Proximity of the vertebral artery and hypoglossal canal presents the greatest technical challenge of occipital condyle screw. Four surgical techniques with different entry points, cranial-caudal and medial angulations were described. None of these techniques is superior to the other. Conclusions: Occipital condyle screw is a viable alternative to standard OCF techniques. Challenges exist due to the proximity of the vital anatomical structures. Choice between four available techniques depends on unique patient’s anatomy

In spite of modern diagnostic and surgical techniques, the results of congenital ear malformation surgery are often disappointing. Not only are hearing results less than expected, but also postoperative canal stenosis is a significant problem. This paper reviews the historical development of atresia surgery, the various classification systems, and the management of congenital ear malformations at The Otology Group. The authors' surgical technique is described and the postoperative results of 33 ear operations are discussed. Twenty-two of 33 cases showed some improvement in hearing. Postoperative stenosis occurred in 42% of atresia cases.

Renal metastasis from primary colon cancer is very rare, comprising less than 3% of secondary renal neoplasms. There are just 11 cases reported in the medical literature of colonic adenocarcinoma metastatic to the kidney. Of these cases, none occurred via direct invasion. We report a unique case of a 51-year-old female with extraluminal colonic adenocarcinoma which directly invaded into the kidney. Additionally, we investigate the causal relationship between the site of invasion and a previous stab injury by reviewing the role of the peritoneum and Gerota's fascia in preventing the spread of metastatic cancer into the perirenal space. Due to the rarity of this event, we present this case including a review of the existing literature relative to the diagnosis and treatment.
