In Interpersonal Reconstructive Therapy (IRT: Benjamin, 2003/2006; 2018) a case formulation is used to tailor interventions to each patient’s unique patterns. Using the IRT lens, psychopathology is understood as reflecting attempts to adapt to current environments using maladaptive rules and values that were learned and internalized in the context of close attachment relationships. IRT identifies precise ways in which early learning shapes present experience. Additionally, the "gift of love" (GOL) hypothesis posits that motivation to repeat maladaptive ways is linked to the wish to receive love and acceptance from specific internalized attachment figures by repeating their ways and values for the patient. The IRT case formulation has been shown to be reliable and valid (Critchfield, Benjamin, Levenick, 2015). The therapy adherence measure is also reliable (Critchfield, Davis, Gunn, Benjamin, 2008) and correlates well with retention as well as reduced symptoms and rehospitalization rates (Karpiak, Critchfield, Benjamin, 2011) among "difficult to treat" patients characterized as having high levels of personality disorder, chronic and severe problems, and prior failed treatment attempts. To illustrate the case formulation process, an IRT formulation is applied to the case of a 28-year-old female patient for whom a poor outcome was documented.

Purpose Patients commonly report difficulties adhering to voice therapy. An iOS app was developed in our lab that assists practice via reminder notifications, instructional recordings, and cepstral peak prominence analysis results. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of such homework support modality on adherence behavior and associated motivation in a comparison of app support and written homework instructions and to assess the usability and utility of the app. Method Thirty-four individuals exhibiting adducted hyperfunction were randomized to receive either written homework instructions or the app when practicing resonant voice exercises for 3 weeks. All patients digitally audio-recorded all home practice, provided self-reported estimates of generalization, and completed weekly motivation scales. Results App support significantly increased practice frequency but did not affect self-reported generalization or motivation. Practice was significantly predicted by System Usability Scale scores. Utility of reminders and instructions were good, but cepstral peak prominence feedback was considered useful to only a subset of participants. Conclusion Interactive mobile therapy support can significantly increase practice of resonant voice homework without influencing motivation.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a deliberate destruction of one’s own body tissue without suicidal intention that causes physical injury. NSSI is mostly found in adolescents or young adults (Paul, Tsypes, Eidlitz, Ernhout, & Whitlock, 2015). Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is one of the risk factors for developing NSSI. Individuals with borderline personality disorder also experience invalidation during their childhood, this can cause individuals with BPD to feel that they deserve to receive NSSI as a form of self-punishment (Sadeh et al., 2014). In addition, children who experience parental separation (through death, divorce or employment) have a higher risk factor for developing NSSI (Astrup, Pedersen, Mok, Carr, & Webb, 2017). A literature search was conducted in six databases, and a total of 20 relevant articles were found. The explanation of the relationship between non-suicidal self-injury, borderline personality disorder, and loss of or separation from a parent are explored in this study, in order to increase understanding of how NSSI behaviours can be prevented. An increasing number of findings confirm the significance of cerebellum in affecting regulation and early learning. Most consistent findings refer to association of congenital vermis anomalies with deficits in nonmotor functions of cerebellum. In this paper we presented a young woman who was treated since sixteen years of age for polysubstance abuse, affective instability, and self-harming who was later diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Since the neurological and neuropsychological reports pointed to signs of cerebellar dysfunction and dysexecutive syndrome, we performed magnetic resonance imaging of brain which demonstrated partially developed vermis and rhombencephalosynapsis. These findings match the description of cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome and show an overlap with clinical manifestations of borderline personality disorder.

Marcel Mauss published his essay The Gift (1925) in the context of debates about the European sovereign debt crises and the economic growth experienced by the colonies. This article traces the discursive associations between Mauss’ anthropological concepts (“gift,” “exchanges of prestations,” and “generosity”) and the reformist program of French socialists who pushed for an “altruistic” colonial policy in the interwar period. This article demonstrates that the three obligations which Mauss identified as the basis of a customary law of international economic relations (i.e. the duty to give, the duty to receive, and the duty to give back) served as key references in the French debate about the relationships between metropolises and colonies in the interwar period. Mauss made this relation between colonial policy and the ethnology of the gift explicit in his book, The Nation. Moving beyond Mauss’ interwar writings, the article traces the genealogy of his later reflections to his involvement in prewar debates about chartered companies.

From the vantage point of August 1, 1985, the past three years are better characterized by what has failed to happen, politically, in realms directly affecting the concerns of applied linguistics in the United States than by what actually has happened. Despite 55 months of the Reagan Revolution, the Department of Education is still intact, and, with it, the Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs (OBEMLA). Bilingual education continues to receive federal funding, though predictably at levels that satisfy neither its advocates (too low) nor its detractors (too high).

Interpersonal problems are among the most severely impairing, difficult-to-manage, and intransigent of borderline personality disorder (BPD) features and therefore require special attention in treatment. Emotion dysregulation and related mood-dependent behaviors among individuals with BPD typically occur in the context of interpersonally relevant events or stressors, signifying the central role of interpersonal and attachment-related concerns for these patients. Two prominent interpersonal themes in those with BPD are discussed: interpersonal hypersensitivity and angry or aggressive behavior. The chapter provides a brief case illustration of how these themes might emerge in psychotherapy and recommends explicit assessment of interpersonal problems and aggression to enhance risk evaluation, case formulation, treatment planning, and monitoring progress in treatment.

The Library of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow contains over 50,000 books on Russian and foreign art. The collections date back to the gift, in 1899, of the library of P. M. Tretyakov. From 1918, the Library and the Gallery received the benefit of State support; the Library gained books from private collections and as a result of the closure of other museums, and it continued to receive donations. From 1931, copies of Russian publications on art were received on legal deposit, and many publications are additionally acquired in exchange for copies of the Gallery’s own publications. As well as books, the Library contains collections of manuscripts, of press-cuttings, and of exhibition invitation cards and posters. The Library maintains several card indexes, on Soviet art and the participation of Soviet artists in exhibitions, and of journal articles, illustrations, illustrators, and exhibition catalogues. The Library has itself published several reference books.

Posthuman Rap leads to a posthuman vestibule, connected to and aware of neoliberal humanism but situated just outside of it, in a place where we might imagine other ways of being human. Big K.R.I.T.’s car, quaking with sub-bass blasting from his woofer, is exactly this kind of vestibule. K.R.I.T., working with AfroFuturist materials, uses it to create big bangs and new worlds beyond our own. But before he can call entire planets into being, he must first tune his vestibule to receive and transmit vibrations from beyond the edge of human perception. It’s from this vantage point, staring through the vibrating glass of his car, that he can imagine other ways of being human.

This chapter argues that theological claims about humanity can open up a new realm of thought for anthropology. This point is illustrated by considering Lutheran theological discussions of the role of passivity in shaping the gift relationship and indicating ways in which they could enrich anthropological debates around this classic disciplinary topic. In particular, I suggest that theological ideas of passivity profoundly challenge standard anthropological accounts of the role of the obligation to receive in the theory of the gift. The final part of the chapter uses the notion of passivity to initiate a consideration of some ways the disciplines of anthropology and theology are likely destined not to reach agreement through interdisciplinary dialogue: most notably on the issue of the distribution of passivity and agency between the human and the divine. Arguments about the nature of the gift are developed through discussion of materials from Papua New Guinea.
