The throttling valve used in the refrigeration system always causes energy loss. In this paper, an energy recovery device in the refrigeration system which was composed of an expander-auxiliary compressor unit to replace the throttling valve was investigated. On the basis of thermodynamic analysis, two typical arrangements which the auxiliary compressor was connected to the main compressor of the refrigeration system were compared and the system performance parameters were discussed. A prototype of an expander-auxiliary unit was manufactured to observe the expander performance using R410A as refrigerant. The results showed the reliability of the unit working in the two-phase flow condition with the rotation speed up to 21020 rpm. And the maximum increases in the cooling capacity by 3.9% and COP by 3.2% could be obtained under the testing condition.

Fuel cell based micro combined heat and power (micro-CHP) systems are residential scale clean energy conversion unit. It employs fuel cells in a compact system that converts natural gas, propane or other fuels into both electricity and heat, which increases efficiency by simultaneously generating power and heat for one unit, on-site within a home. A prototype system consisting of a natural gas steam reforming unit, CO cleaning unit, PEM fuel cell stack, waste heat recovery unit and auxiliary unit is integrated. Test results of the prototype show that it can start within an hour and the syngas produced can meet the fuel cell’s requirements. The prototype’s electric power and thermal power are 200W and 530W respectively, while the electric and thermal efficiency are 15.4% and 40.9% respectively.

We analyse the survival time of a general duplex system sustained by an auxiliary cold standby unit and subjected to priority rules. The duplex system is attended by two general repairmenRpandRh. RepairmanRphas priority in repairing failed units with regard to repairmanRhprovided that both repairmen are jointly idle. Otherwise, the priority is overruled. The auxiliary unit has its own repair facility. The duplex system has overall, break-in priority (often called pre-emptive priority) in operation and in standby with regard to the auxiliary unit. The analysis of the survival time is based on advanced complex function theory (sectionally holomorphic functions). The main problem is to convert a functional equation into a (parameter dependent) Sokhotski–Plemelj problem.

The structure and organization of the Roman army is a complex subject for ancient historians. Of its multiple aspects, the schedule of the daily routine is one of the most interesting but, at the same time, is scarcely known. Of course, huge progress has been made with the publication of the daily rosters of one particular auxiliary unit in the East (cohors XX Palmyrenorum, at Dura, Syria), but the detail of the chronological organization of the unit's schedule is still to be revealed.

The country assembly is a form of direct exercise of power by the local community (direct democracy). It is the body of a specific settlement, which is an auxiliary unit created in Poland by the commune. The organization of a country assembly, as well as its tasks, are defined in the statute of the settlement, accepted by the commune council. The country assembly, as a collective body, plays an important role in carrying out the tasks transferred to the settlement and also it exerts an impact on how to use the property administered by the settlement.

The career of Tiberius Claudius Maximus, published in the last volume of this Journal, is unique. The relevant portion runs: militavit eque(s) in leg(ione) VII C(laudia) p(ia) f(ideli), factus qu(a)estor equit(um), singularis legati legionis eiusdem, vexillarius equitum, item bello Dacico ob virtute(m) donis donatus ab imp(eratore) Domitiano, factus dupli(carius) a divo Troiano in ala secu(n)d(a) Pannoniorum, a quo et fa(c)tus explorator in bello Dacico et ob virtute(m) bis donis donatus bello Dacico et Parthico, et ab eode(m) factus decurio in ala eade(m), quod cepisset Decebalu(m) et caput eius pertulisset ei Ranisstoro, missus voluntarius honesta missione a Terent[io Scau]riano, consulare [exerci]tus provinciae nov[ae …His career not only contains two otherwise unattested posts, quaestor equitum and singularis legati legionis, but is unparalleled in the promotion from principalis in a legion to duplicarius, an alternative title for optio, in an auxiliary unit. Speidel assumes that this latter move involved a pay rise, since transfer from a legion to an ala would usually be accompanied by an increase in pay. This assumption if correct has such far reaching implications that it requires detailed examination.
