AbstractMahan Mitra (Mj) proved Cannon–Thurston maps exist for normal hyperbolic subgroups of a hyperbolic group (Mitra in Topology, 37(3):527–538, 1998). We prove that Cannon–Thurston maps do not exist for infinite normal hyperbolic subgroups of non-hyperbolic $${{\,\mathrm{CAT}\,}}(0)$$ CAT ( 0 ) groups with isolated flats with respect to the visual boundaries. We also show Cannon–Thurston maps do not exist for infinite infinite-index normal $${{\,\mathrm{CAT}\,}}(0)$$ CAT ( 0 ) subgroups with isolated flats in non-hyperbolic $${{\,\mathrm{CAT}\,}}(0)$$ CAT ( 0 ) groups with isolated flats. We obtain a structure theorem for the normal subgroups in these settings and show that outer automorphism groups of hyperbolic groups have no purely atoroidal $$\mathbb {Z}^2$$ Z 2 subgroups.

AbstractIn this note we obtain estimates on the relative growth of normal subgroups of non-elementary hyperbolic groups, particularly those with free abelian quotient. As a corollary, we deduce that the associated relative growth series fail to be rational.

AbstractA function on a discrete group is weakly combable if its discrete derivative with respect to a combing can be calculated by a finite-state automaton. A weakly combable function is bicombable if it is Lipschitz in both the left- and right-invariant word metrics. Examples of bicombable functions on word-hyperbolic groups include:(1)homomorphisms to ℤ;(2)word length with respect to a finite generating set;(3)most known explicit constructions of quasimorphisms (e.g. the Epstein–Fujiwara counting quasimorphisms). We show that bicombable functions on word-hyperbolic groups satisfy acentral limit theorem: if$\overline {\phi }_n$is the value of ϕ on a random element of word lengthn(in a certain sense), there areEandσfor which there is convergence in the sense of distribution$n^{-1/2}(\overline {\phi }_n - nE) \to N(0,\sigma )$, whereN(0,σ) denotes the normal distribution with standard deviationσ. As a corollary, we show that ifS1andS2are any two finite generating sets forG, there is an algebraic numberλ1,2depending onS1andS2such that almost every word of lengthnin theS1metric has word lengthn⋅λ1,2in theS2metric, with error of size$O(\sqrt {n})$.

AbstractWe show the mapping class group, $${{\,\mathrm{CAT}\,}}(0)$$ CAT ( 0 ) groups, the fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds, and certain relatively hyperbolic groups have a local-to-global property for Morse quasi-geodesics. This allows us to generalize combination theorems of Gitik for quasiconvex subgroups of hyperbolic groups to the stable subgroups of these groups. In the case of the mapping class group, this gives combination theorems for convex cocompact subgroups. We show a number of additional consequences of this local-to-global property, including a Cartan–Hadamard type theorem for detecting hyperbolicity locally and discreteness of translation length of conjugacy classes of Morse elements with a fixed gauge. To prove the relatively hyperbolic case, we develop a theory of deep points for local quasi-geodesics in relatively hyperbolic spaces, extending work of Hruska.

AbstractWe determine all the normal subgroups of the group of Cr diffeomorphisms of ℝn, 1≤r≤∞, except when r=n+1 or n=4, and also of the group of homeomorphisms of ℝn ( r=0). We also study the group A0 of diffeomorphisms of an open manifold M that are isotopic to the identity. If M is the interior of a compact manifold with non-empty boundary, then the quotient of A0 by the normal subgroup of diffeomorphisms that coincide with the identity near to a given end e of M is simple.

We prove that a polygonal product of polycyclic by finite groups amalgamating normal subgroups, with trivial mutual intersections, is cyclic subgroup separable. Because of a recent example (stated below) of the author this substantial improvement on a recent theorem of Kim is essentially best possible.

Abstract We introduce a new subgroup embedding property of finite groups called CSQ-normality of subgroups. Using this subgroup property, we determine the structure of finite groups with some CSQ-normal subgroups of Sylow subgroups. As an application of our results, some recent results are generalized.
