Abstract The phase diagrams of the binary systems sodium-potassium, sodium-caesium, and potassium-caesium propionates have been investigated by differential thermal analysis and hot-stage polarization microscopy. Smectic liquid crystals in the systems with sodium propionate have been discovered. Liquid crystal formation in binaries of two non-mesomorphic components is explained by latent mesomorphism which is shown to be inherent to both sodium and potassium propionate.

The phase diagrams of binary systems of cobalt(II) octanoate and lithium, sodium, potassium, and thallium(I) octanoates have been studied by differential thermal analysis and polythermal polarization microscopy. In all systems, continuous or limited liquid crystalline solutions of smectic modification are formed. The temperature and composition ranges of the formation of liquid crystals and glasses have been determined.

Abstract The phase diagrams of the binary mixtures of mesogenic potassium iso-butyrate with non-mesogenic lithium-, sodium-, and caesium iso-butyrate have been investigated by differential thermal analysis and hot stage polarization microscopy. The temperature and concentration ranges of liquid crystal formation have been established. Sodium and caesium iso-butyrate have been found to possess latent mesogenic properties.

Abstract The phase transition temperatures were determined by differential thermal analysis and hot stage polarization microscopy between room temperature and the isotropic liquid region for the binary systems of lead (II) decanoate with zinc (II) or cadmium (II) decanoate. The boundaries of the liquid crystal formation in these systems were found.

Abstract The phase diagrams of the binary systems of non-mesomorphic components such as caesium-mag-nesium, caesium-calcium and caesium-barium butyrates have been studied by differential thermal analysis and hot stage polarization microscopy. Smectic liquid crystals are found in some composition ranges of the binaries with calcium and barium butyrates. The liquid crystal appearance in these systems is explained by the exhibition of latent mesomorphism of caesium butyrate. Glasses are obtained in all systems studied, the formation of vitreous optical anisotropic mesophase being revealed only for binary from caesium and barium butyrates.

Abstract The phase diagrams of the binary mixtures of mesogenic potassium isobutyrate with non-mesogenic potassium propionate and mesogenic sodium butyrate with non-mesogenic sodium isobutyrate have been investigated by differential thermal analysis and hot stage polarization microscopy. Both systems have one eutectic and one metatectic phase equilibriums. Pecularities of liquid crystal formation in binary alkanoate systems with common alkali metal cation are discussed and compared with those of systems with common anion.

Abstract The temperature and composition ranges of liquid crystal and glass formation have been established for the binary mixtures of mesogenic sodium butyrate with non-mesogenic magnesium, calcium and strontium butyrates by means of differential thermal analysis and hot stage polarization microscopy. The formation of a vitreous optically anisotropic mesophase has been found for binaries of sodium butyrate with calcium and strontium butyrates.

Abstract The phase diagrams of the binary systems given in the title have been studied by differential thermal analyses and hot stage polarization microscopy. Smectic liquid crystals are found in some composition ranges of the binary with sodium iso-butyrate. The liquid crystal appearance in this system is explained by latent mesomorphism of both components and by the additional electrostatic stabilization of the ionic mesophase because of dissimilar cation interactions. The unlike conditions for the exhibition of latent mesomorphism of caesium isobutyrate in the two systems is discussed.

Abstract Phase equilibria of non-mesogenic caesium- and zinc-butyrate mixtures were studied by differential thermal analysis and hot stage polarization microscopy. Smectic liquid crystals were found in some composition range. Their appearance is explained by the latent mesomorphism of caesium butyrate. |133Cs NMR spectra and the specific electrical conductivity of the molten mixtures at 155°C were employed to investigate the peculiarities of ionic association and interaction in the melts.

Phase transitions in (NH4, M)Cl with M=Tl, Rb or Cs and (ND4, Tl)Cl as well as (NH4, M)Br and (ND4, M)Br are measured using birefringence or differential thermal analysis. The phase diagrams of the mixed systems with M=Tl having decreasing lattice constant with increasing amount of Tl are similar to the well known T(P) diagrams. Therefore the diagrams of the sys­tems with M=Rb or Cs having increasing lattice constants correspond to T(P) diagrams in the range of fictitious negative pressure P. Substitution of D for H produces an effect similar to reducing the lattice constant. The extraordinary large negative isotope effect of II-III transitions and the appearance of the birefringent phase III in the chlorides are now understood.
