The anthropic and natural elements have become more closely monitored and analysed through the use of remote sensing and GIS applications. In this regard, the study aims to feature a different approach to produce more and more thematic information, focusing on the development of built-up areas. In this paper, multispectral images and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images were the basis of a wide range of proximity analyses. These allow the extraction of data about the distribution of built-up space on the areas with potential for economic and social development. Application of interferometric coherence and supervised classifications have been accomplished on various territories, such as metropolitan areas of the most developed region of Romania, more specifically Transylvania. The results indicate accuracy values, which can reach 94 per cent for multispectral datasets and 93 per cent for SAR datasets. The accuracy of resulted data will reveal a variety of city patterns, depending mainly on local features regarding natural and administrative environments. In this way, a comparison will be made between the accuracy of both datasets to provide an analysis of the manner of built-up areas distribution to assess the expansion of the studied metropolitan areas. Therefore, this study aims to apply well-established methods from the remote sensing field to enhance the information and datasets in some areas lacking recent research.

In recent years, multi-input multi-output (MIMO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems, which can promote the performance of 3D imaging, high-resolution wide-swath remote sensing, and multi-baseline interferometry, have received considerable attention. Several papers on MIMO-SAR have been published, but the research of such systems is seriously limited. This is mainly because the superposed echoes of the multiple transmitted orthogonal waveforms cannot be separated perfectly. The imperfect separation will introduce ambiguous energy and degrade SAR images dramatically. In this paper, a novel orthogonal waveform separation scheme based on echo-compression is proposed for airborne MIMO-SAR systems. Specifically, apart from the simultaneous transmissions, the transmitters are required to radiate several times alone in a synthetic aperture to sense their private inner-aperture channels. Since the channel responses at the neighboring azimuth positions are relevant, the energy of the solely radiated orthogonal waveforms in the superposed echoes will be concentrated. To this end, the echoes of the multiple transmitted orthogonal waveforms can be separated by cancelling the peaks. In addition, the cleaned echoes, along with original superposed one, can be used to reconstruct the unambiguous echoes. The proposed scheme is validated by simulations.

The study of shoreline changes is essential for updating the changes in shoreline maps and management of natural resources as the shoreline is one of the most important features on the earth’s surface. Shorelines are the key element in coastal GIS that provide information on coastal landform dynamics. The purpose of this paper is to investigate shoreline changes in the study area and how it affects surface water quality using Landsat imagery from 1987 to 2016. The image processing techniques adopted involves supervised classification, object-based image analysis, shoreline extraction and image enhancement. The data obtained was analyzed and maps were generated and then integrated in a GIS environment. The results indicate that LULC changes in wetland areas increases rapidly during the years (1987-2016) from 34.83 to 38.96%, vegetation cover reduces drastically through the year which range from 30% to 20%. Polluted surface water was observed to have decreased from 30% to 20% during 1984-2010 and reduced by about 3% in 2016. In addition, the result revealed the highest level of erosion from 1987 to 2016 which is -49.60% against the highest level of accretion of 13.39% EPR and NSM -1400 erosion against 350 accretions. It was also observed that variations in shoreline changes affect the quality of surface water possibly due to shoreline movement hinterland. This study has demonstrated that through satellite remote sensing and GIS techniques, the Nigerian coastline can adequately be monitored for various changes that have taken place over the years.Key Words: Shoreline, Remote Sensing, Erosion, Accretion, GIS
